My friends in the UK pointed me to a discussion on BBC that involved a number of specialists on NATO and Continental Security. ONe of the most compelling arguments referred to a growing perception that that this Putin Aggression was de facto threatening NATO States in Eastern Europe, which Putin has identified as stolen Soviet Bloc States….an argument for NATO taking a very great interest in security for Western Ukraine. Putin even made that clearer today, when Finland and Sweden attended the NATO meeting, he went ballistic and warned of military and financial consequences if they joined. I would be concerned about precedent if I were Putin when it comes to getting support from China. China and Russia share a border which has been the source of significant disputes…..there is little doubt that the Chinese claims of ethnic intergrity (i.e. the region is Asian and not European) is a key to claims that the region is occupied by imperial Russia. CL – I think Putin is asking to negotiate for multiple reasons. First, China is telling him to and if he loses China, he knows he’s toast. Second, his plan is to extort Ukraine by taking Kyiv before negotiations then “negotiating” not to Ukranians as long as the current government resigns and hands him the crown to put on a puppet. Latly, he is using it for propaganda so he can say, “I tried to negotiate with them but they wouldn’t so I had to kill women and children!” AdLib an hour ago

But I do like it when a character is explored with more depth and relevance. Have to say, I am more often disappointed with how they’ve portrayed these classic characters. They ruined the Superman comeback by making him dark. That original Christopher Reeve Superman movie was so uplifting and positive, the idea of siomeone having unshakable empathy and principles who holds enormous power is so much more resonant than a “dark” Superman.
