Vox Populi, our weekly live chat about the week’s events begins tonight at 7:00pm PT. Hope to see you then!

AdLib4 days ago

Hey CL!

AdLib4 days ago

Hey Ad – that was all very weird, but I’m glad it’s fairly easily fixed.

choicelady

So, how has your week been?

choicelady

This is what I get for trusting the NY Times. Their newsfeed keeps blocking itself and despite replacing and fixing it, they clearly see us as a threat to their subscription numbers and keep messing us up!

AdLib4 days ago

The NY Times isn’t what it used to be, and electronics do not seem to improve that.

choicelady

My wife is flying back from Texas tonight, she was supposed to come back on Sunday then Saturday then we made it tonight because that massive ice storm is coming there.

AdLib4 days ago

Nope, the NYT can’t decide whether to fully throw in with Trump or be a real newspaper. The Washington Post is now not even fit to line the bottom of bird cages.

AdLib4 days ago

Oh, gosh – I’m so glad she’s coming in soon. Do you have to cut this short to get her? I’m glad she isn’t there – no one knows who has power, who doesn’t. We have part of hub’s original family west of Austin, and in the SAME TOWN people have different power companies and different access to heat.

choicelady

WaPo was my “go to” since Watergate. It breaks my heart.

choicelady

It’s pretty scary. We didn’t want to take a chance on her flight tomorrow afternoon being canceled so we had to pay a bit more and get her out for certain tonight. I fear that there will be people who die because of power going out and such.

AdLib4 days ago

Did you know I went to HS with Bob Woodward? He was older and a BMOC in his day. But he was dumb as two bricks. Turned out well, for which I credit Bernstein’s professionalism and drive.

choicelady

And she doesn’t get in until 11:30 pm so we have plenty of time for Vox.

AdLib4 days ago

My husban’ds 95 year old dying aunt and two cousins are west of Austin. We are very worried they all stay safe.

choicelady

I had a subscription for years with WAPO and after the Bezos kneel to Trump, I knew it was dead to me.

AdLib4 days ago

She got “the last train from Abilene” (I think I read a story of that name once). Glad she’s going to be home.

choicelady

Yes, I remember you went to school with Woodward. Agreed, Bernstein carried him into journalistic history on his back and since then, Woodward has shown what a lousy journalist he is.

AdLib4 days ago

All our relatives have alternative heat – wood stoves and fireplaces. They tend to gather in when things get bad. Very wise.

choicelady

Well, he wasn’t very articulate as I recall. Still isn’t. Bernstein’s the brains, no question about it.

choicelady

Together however, they set a very high bar on journalism. And nobody has bothered really to match it .

choicelady

Boston Globe’s “Spotlight” section is pretty much in the old Watergate tradition. I hope they keep that commitment.

choicelady

That is very worrisome, I hope your hubby’s Aunt and cousins are safe and sound. The warnings are very severe, exposure at the coldest would destroy any exposed skin. Thankfully, Trump has cut FEMA and all Climate Change programs while whipping up oil and coal polution so many in the future will look back on this disaster as “the good old days”.

AdLib4 days ago

They all have good houses, fireplaces, and they’re smart. They would pile in blankets, etc. and keep together to keep warm.

choicelady

In the world today, having a wood burning stove may have seemed old fashioned but is a great thing to have in tough times.

AdLib4 days ago

CL – Listening to Woodward speak is like listening to someone who just had a concussion.

AdLib4 days ago

Have you seen Woodward comment on today’s WAPO?

AdLib4 days ago

When we bought this house, I insisted whatever we got had to have alternative heat. Never needed it until three years ago – at which point we didn’t use it for fear all those years of not might create a chimney fire! So now we’re getting it swept and inspected. You just never know when you need it.

choicelady

No – I’ve not seen him or read him in ages.

choicelady

I have little hope for WAPO to retain any integrity but it would be great if they kept the soul of Spotlight intact.

AdLib4 days ago

I just read your description of his halting, affect-less speech. Cracked me up.

choicelady

Boston Globe has Spotlight – and I think they’re pretty independent.

choicelady

We have a wood burning fireplace and use it every Winter. So at least, if there is some kind of disruption in LA, we’ll still have at least one room with heat. You know it’s illegal in CA to build homes anymore with wood burning fireplaces. Yes, gas fireplaces have replaced them but if the gas goes out, like in an earthquake, you’re out of luck.

AdLib4 days ago

Oh right, Boston Globe! I had WAPO on the mind and now need to get it out for good!

AdLib4 days ago

Heh! I can’t say I have ever heard Woodward speak something that made me think the word, “brilliant”.

AdLib4 days ago

I know you can’t build wood fireplaces but we are grandfathered. We haven’t used it in years. But we know we HAVE needed to, so we’re getting it safe. Just in case

choicelady

My memory of him in HS is strolling the halls looking cool dude, pegleg back chinos, loafers, yellow V-neck sweater, smug smile. I was beneath his notice.

choicelady

Hey, we enjoy our fireplace but being in SoCal, not as many cold days for it to make sense to use it. And firewood is ridiculously high, burning money would cost close to the same amount.

AdLib4 days ago

pegleg BLACK chinos or jeans – can’t really remember – but we were not allowed to wear jeans unless we were in the tech classes.

choicelady

I think he had a smug smile tattooed on his face. Never seen him without it.

AdLib4 days ago

We scavenge wood.

choicelady

That’s Bob – smug.

choicelady

Only place for us to scavange wood in this city is at the construction sites of McMansions.

AdLib4 days ago

LOL! We have trees all around. They shed limbs we stockpile.

choicelady

That’s cool! We have cut back trees, had some avocado tree wood to burn last year, burned well but not enough of it.

AdLib4 days ago

Because we have tons of trees, wood here is fairly cheap. Not always good quality though.

choicelady

Apparently, WAPO isn’t sending any sports reporters to the Winter Olympics. I guess they’re too busy covering their staff skating around Trump.

AdLib4 days ago

Ba-dum-bah!

AdLib4 days ago

choicelady

REALLY snappy retort there!!!

choicelady

Heh! Just watched the first episode of the doc on Mel Brooks and was inspired.

AdLib4 days ago

Did you watch the Smith hearing yesterday? It was pretty crappy until Jayapal did her thing. She was GREAT. I have had MAJOR reservations about her, but she did her job. I liked most of the Dems but they talked too much. She was SPOT ON.

choicelady

ANYTHING Mel Brooks is inspirational.

choicelady

WP not sending sports reporters is true, they also announced they’re going to be doing major layoffs soon. Yep, Bezos has to like that everything is going as planned.

AdLib4 days ago

When the value of the WaPo gets down to $4.98, the former reporters should buy it out, run it as a worker owned business, and do the GREAT journalism for which it became known.

choicelady

I didn’t watch much of the hearing, I knew at least half of it would be Repubs lying and slinging mud at Smith but I will look for the video of Jaypal.

AdLib4 days ago

I am fairly impressed with her – she isn’t the rancid ideologue many of the squad are.

choicelady

She CAN be, but overall she is really smart.

choicelady

Brooks’ life story is pretty remarkable. The doc is on HBO, don’t know if you subscribe but if so, it is so worth watching.

AdLib4 days ago

No – we don’t have HBO. Too bad because I’d love to see that.

choicelady

CL – That would be a dream come true but something tells me that Bezos may think it will benefit him more with Trump to biry WAPO 6 feet deep. He is an underrated monster as most billionaires are.

AdLib4 days ago

What creeps me out most is that a long time ago, Bezos was a pretty decent guy. The corruption that he’s embraced is unnecessary. But most rich guys seem to do it.

choicelady

So, what do you think of the Dem leadership not including any plank in their platform about ICE or the abuses? They released a 5 point program for this year’s campaign, only addressing affordability.

AdLib4 days ago

I think that this obscene amount of money billionaires have corrupts nearly all of them into thinking that they are superior to the people, democracy which represents the power of the many is offensive to them and their success justifies their greed and narcissism.

AdLib4 days ago

IOW, they are all transformed into selfish monsters who have no principles or morals.

AdLib4 days ago

I have roots in Omaha and the Omaha World Herald. My aunt and uncle were both on staff there. Buffett, due to his ownership of the Buffalo News, was a member of the Press Club as were my family. They saw him there often, and he’s a damned good human being. Planned Parenthood’s BIGGEST funder. He doesn’t interfere with how companies he buys operate and is NOT anti union. He’s one of the “tax the rich” reformer billionaires. Still lives in a cute stone house in Dundee, my fave section of Omaha. Modest man. Good soul. Now why do the others turn so rancid?

choicelady

Yes, I agree about Buffett and I think Cuban has principles too even though I don’t agree with him on everything. But they seem to be the exceptions to the rule. It sure appears the majority of billionaires are greed-obsessed narcissists and they have become very active in their pursuits of oppressing the many.

AdLib4 days ago

There are several groups of millionaires that are pushing for justice. They get NO attention despite being both tech folks, business people etc. They need us to lift them up and bring them forward – and Tom Steyer is one of them. I don’t want him for governor, but I’ve met him and like him a lot. It’s like the liberal faith community – we are all overlooked.

choicelady

Did you see this photo in MN today, in -20 degrees!

AdLib4 days ago

Let me say as a Midwestern/Buffalo person, that isn’t as grim as it sounds on weather. That many people together? Can melt ice. So they worked to MELT ICE!!

choicelady

I can see that with some millionaires being principled and moral but I was addressing billionaires and the rare ones that aren’t corrupt and frankly, evil.

AdLib4 days ago

I love MN. My ex and I spent much time there though mostly in Duluth. Great people. It’s not a myth.

choicelady

YES! MELT ICE FOR (RACHEL) GOOD!

AdLib4 days ago

Well Nick Hanauer and Buffet and couple I can’t recall are all good folks.

choicelady

It’s clear after seeing the MN community help protect and support those in need of it, that MN people are an inspiration to America.

AdLib4 days ago

They really are the iconic Americans. Most folks of the Plains are. Too many have been sold a bill of goods, but if you dig down, they actually are more like us. We did drop the ball politically by dismissing them as “flyover country”. Omaha just elected a Black Dem mayor. They can be educated.

choicelady

We need millionaires and billionaires like them to help level the political playing field. Watching Musk, Thiel, Adelson, Bezos, Cook, Ellison, etc. trying to overthrow our democracy and oppress the many is so nauseating.

AdLib4 days ago

Texas until Bush was Dem. Ann Richards was VERY popular. Not sure how the RW got such a toe hold. But we didn’t do the work needed to keep them.

choicelady

As in TX, when the RW gets in power, they focus their efforts in cutting away the roots of a healthy democracy so they can stay in power. TX has one of the worst “democracies” in the nation, they strongly supress Dem voters and PoC and meanwhile, crush the majority of the population with their greedy policies.

AdLib4 days ago

John Tester is an example of a Great Plains liberal we should have fought to keep. He is golden. I want Sherrod Brown back. I know these people. Meet up, bring a covered dish and a good beer, you can talk.

choicelady

I think Sherrod can win back his seat and if Tester runs next time, I think he could too. The polling this year looks so grim for Repubs and so uplifting for Dems. Trump and the GOP may try to undermine the elections but they will ultimately fail. What do you think the odds are of a Dem takeover of The House AND The Senate?

AdLib4 days ago

Oh, I know the TX strategy far too well. But I don’t get why we just blew them off and let the RW have them. My “new” cousin’s late husband was a DA and a very good man. Very fair. And nobody paid attention to him and my cousin who are liberals. We really fucked up there.

choicelady

I think it’s VERY possible we will take both houses. The KEY issue is getting enough – 60 – for cloture. 67 for veto override would be better!

choicelady

AND to convict on impeachment!

choicelady

Looking at the low levels of voter registration for PoC in TX, I would suggest that it’s not that Dems don’t try to win in TX, it’s that their potential voters are kept from registering or voting.

AdLib4 days ago

We really have to have a TX Dem party that does better. Having driven a good chunk of it, I see the enormity of the organizing difficulties, but we really have to have “all hands on deck” there.

choicelady

I will take my hopes in stages. First, flip The House and Senate. Then, hope the margins Dem have are as high as you’re hoping. All this mid-decade redistricting looks like a wash or even Dems coming out on top which is pretty funny.

AdLib4 days ago

TX screwed itself – they tried to abolish Black strong holds but in the process created MANY new “purple” districts they’d never had. Ooops!

choicelady

Here’s the thing that could right this ship of democracy in the US. If, in 2028, we elect a Dem President and Congress, passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and ending gerrymandering could almost immediately end the unjust corruption of our democracy. We could build quickly from that.

AdLib4 days ago

I really want to impeach AND convict Trump on treason – and that by the Constitution includes JD. If we could do that, it would be life changing.

choicelady

Yup – those would be primo and pretty easy to do.

choicelady

It is kind of funny that TX Repubs took for granted that the Latino shift to Trump was permanent, designed their gerrymanders upon that myth, and now see that they may have endangered multiple districts going Dem because of it. Hubris is the Republican kryptonite.

AdLib4 days ago

Did you know Patty Murray, ranking on Appropriations, got a bipartisan Approps bill that KILLS ICE funding, puts huge controls on DN

choicelady

Sorry – DHS and Noem? This may or may not pass the House and likely will be vetoed. But it’s HUGE.

choicelady

Well…we would really need more than 2/3 of The Senate to go Dem, can’t count on lunatics like Fetterman to vote to convict Trump in impeachment hearings.

AdLib4 days ago

Nobody should count out Schumer or Jeffries. Tactically they are quite solid. I don’t need charisma. I need SUCCESS. For the Approps bill to be passed – WOW!!!

choicelady

Really? Murray did? Is that what passed? I thought it didn’t reduce ICE funding but did put some restraints and conditions on ICE.

AdLib4 days ago

It cut ICE funding HUGELY and also cut 60% of their incarceration budget thus stopping supermax expansions cold and forcing them to release people. Not deport – release them.

choicelady

Oh right, DHS! Yes, saw that and was heartened by it. As for Schumer, I’m not much of a fan but I would be thrilled to see him prove me wrong.

AdLib4 days ago

CL – That’s fantastic news! The House needs to pass their version now?

AdLib4 days ago

Schumer is tactically very smart. I’ve met him, had a small group meeting w him years ago. Dont’ find him very interesting but do know he’s canny and wise.

choicelady

It has to go to the floor, but they have the votes I think. Then to the House. So we’ll see.

choicelady

Approps has teetch nothing else has. Can’t pass policy, but money as a weapon accomplishes things.

choicelady

teeth,.

choicelady

Well, we shall see as the campaign starts rolling for the elections this year. FWIW, Schumer has a negative rating with Democrats, the worst disapproval ratings for a Dem congressional leader since they’ve been keeping records. If he has some secret scheme that is making him look so ineffective but he’s really going to deliver, I would only be thrilled about that.

AdLib4 days ago

I can’t type anymore…

choicelady

No worries! I can’t read well anymore!

AdLib4 days ago

The ratings are from the naysayers who never remind anyone that minority parties have ZERO inherent power. But he is the one who used the Parliamentarian to rid the BBB (BUB) of rancid policies that would be passed to give Trump lifetime power he never would otherwise have. Now he paved the way for the Approps. bill. He is very good at this. People have no idea how good he is. Media don’t get it, DSA types hate him, and we get really bad info on what he has done.

choicelady

I do think that Schumer is being way too overcautious about standing up against ICE. Many articles are coming out saying his fear is to be tarred by Repubs as anti-police. In the current climate, that is just plain misguided. Most Americans strongly oppose this gestapo ICE murdering, kidnapping 5 year olds, there is clearly a real hunger by the majority for fighting back against this police state. Conventional and cautious political views are not in step with ahet the majority wants, hence the historical low ratings for the Dem party and leadership.

AdLib4 days ago

Everyone wants “magical Dems” to save us. Well, Schumer is as close as we can get to that. He knows the tricks of the trade and uses them.

choicelady

No – like Pelosi, Dems can NEVER promise what they can’t deliver. Pelosi wouldn’t impeach Trump until she could. Schumer is quiet on ICE until he found a way. It is dangerous to pretend you can deliver what you can’t. MAGA gets away with it. Dems can’t.

choicelady

I think many are upset that Schumer refuses to stand up strongly against ICE, Greenland, and many other fascist acts by Trump. Many don’t expect him to be able to stop Trump but they want leaders to represent and inspire a movement to protest and stand against this fascism. Schumer may be a master at political strategy in The Senate but he’s not rising to lead the people on these critical issues.

AdLib4 days ago

But that’swhy Schumer isn’t liked by a mahjority of Dems, keeping quiet until he can do something isn’t leadership of a movement. It is strategy on perceptions of him and Dems in The Senate. People want Dem leaders now to acknowledge that they hear the people and support the people in their outrages and opposition to this fascism. Schumer’s tactical silence is upsetting and discouraging to those who want leaders to validate and rally them together.

AdLib4 days ago

I have never thought loud opposition was the ticket. Schumer let FLY a few days ago against ICE. Did you hear it? No. Media ignored him. But we caught in on Bluesky – and most didn’t see it. THAT is THE problem – the powerful things being said by Schumer and Jeffries are IGNORED by MSM and even social medica. You see it or you don’t. MEDIA are our BIGGEST gatekeepers for the RW.

choicelady

I read Schumer’s presentation of what the Dem platform will be this year and it completely excluded campaigning against the outrages of ICE. How can he rally Dems when what they are most upset about is the fascist takeover of the US and he just speaks about affordability. Yes, affordability is a strong issue but the most explosive and powerful issue right now is US Citizens being shot in the head and kidnapped and beaten by ICE and the threat of the US Military being turned against the American people.

AdLib4 days ago

i agree – that needs to be included. But he’s NOT part of the DNC, so let’s see what THEY say. He is looking at legislative possibilities not campaign ones.

choicelady

with Dems sweeping to victory everywhere, every level, we need to listen to what successful candidates are saying and what their people are saying to THEM.

choicelady

Trump keeps promising to enact The Insurrection Act. He’s throwing NATO and Ukraine under the bus, setting up a Legion of Evil around the world, things are spinning out of control, we really need Dem leaders to connect with the most emotional and powerful issue right now, that a madman is trying to destroy our country and world order and have billionaires and fascists control the rest of us. That’s far bigger than any other issue and people like us who are upset by this madness should have leadership that is clearly with us on this as a priority.

AdLib4 days ago

I do think you’re right that it is the actual dem candidates who are connecting with their people and voters very well and winning like crazy. Despite the negative views of Schumer, I do agree that Dem candidates will continue to rack up big wins when they connect with the concerns of their voters and the anger against what Trump is doing to their states and countries.

AdLib4 days ago

No resistance has ever been led by legislative leadership. I look at Raskin, Crockett, Moskowitz, Swalwell, Murphy, Kelly, etc. for the loud and vibrant voices of outrage. They are doing the work. That’s where it CAN be done out loud.

choicelady

Seeing the unity and certainty in MN, I can see that being evidenced across the country when the elections come. I am very positive about Dems winning back the House, hoping for The Senate too. I know Trump and Repubs will try their best to sabotage and corrupt the elections but I do not believe they will succeed. The anger of a real majority of the American people will be demonstrated against Trump and the Repubs this Nov. Just wish it wasn’t so far away.

AdLib4 days ago

If Jeffries and Schumer were cowardly, none of the really loud voices would be out there. They would be squelched. They are being tactical – leadership has to balance their wants v GOP. But everyone else is unleashed.

choicelady

Agree with you again. I think leadership can strengthen Dem and Indie voters by validating their concerns and protests but you’re right, they aren’t the drivers of it.

AdLib4 days ago

My TX ‘cousin’ is a wonderful woman. I will talk to her about how she sees things. She is the heart of the heart of the ol’ TX liberalism. She is whip smart, and I can trust her.

choicelady

My personal feeling is that Dem leadership, especially in The Senate, needs to step out of the past and recognize how the game of politics is being played today in the era of fascist, lying news channels and social media manipulation. I just think that younger leaders more plugged into the way things are today, could be even more effective and bring up the approval of the Dem Party.

AdLib4 days ago

I know we hear every election that this is the most important election in our lifetime but it keeps being truer each election. If Dems don’t take over the House this time around, there may be nothing left standing of our democracy by 2028. So I just want to see an all-hands-on-deck from Dem leadership this year that doesn’t give voters any reason for feeling Dems aren’t connecting with their concerns or that they won’t try to make meaningful changes to the awfulness that’s drowning this nation.

AdLib4 days ago

I think they actually get fascism more than most white Christian types. They are feeling their way at flipping GOP votes because they cannot alienate them. Fascism is what both of them know better than WE do. I’ve watched Black politicians navigate so many crises in just this calm, reserved way at local levels. We don’t get they aren’t able to “code switch” to our wants when to do so costs them a vote, a conversation, a change. I do not need them as my emotional support animals. I need them to be calculating and tactical. And they know as a Jew and a Black man that they carry a heavier burden of convincing the opposition than ANY previous leaders. Pelosi wasn’t all that different – everyone hated her reticence on impeachment, but she knew, as a woman, you don’t go all bombastic w the other side who think you’re barely human. I can hear them. I have lived too long in Black and Jewish communities not to know what ‘s needed by them to succeed. WE need to be the powerful voices, not them.

choicelady

Blacksky lets me into their conversations. They say truth: ICE is the modern “slave catchers”. They aren’t Gestapo nearly as much as they are that. Do you think Jeffries can SAY that to a GOP rep? No. But WE can say it out loud for them. You think Schumer CAN call them America’s “Gestapo” and say it to a GOP Senator? No. But we can. We MUST. If you are counting every vote, you do NOT piss off your tentative allies who are fragile, frightened of Trump, and living in indecision. BUT WE CAN.

choicelady

Well, I don’t think it’s unreasonable or needy to expect the leaders of a party I belong to, to express the same principled outrage that I would to horiffic acts. I take for granted that anayone sharing my principles and morality would be incensed by what they see happening around this country by a secret police force using terror, violence, and murder to end the Constitutional rights of Americans. If that’s to high a hill for any particular leaders in the party to climb because they allegedly have some smarter way of dealing with this politically, it is not something that gives members of that party any confidence.

AdLib4 days ago

No – because THEY HAVE. I have seen the videos. They get silenced. But I also know they are going to be far more measured in dealing w their opposition than we will be. They HAVE to be. And we do not. We need to amplify what they say – and they have said – to free them up not to bring it into negotiations. I get it. They need us. They can

choicelady

If our leadership feels incapable of expressing principled revulsion to such mindless and intended violence against the people, I don’t think they are the right people to be leaders. A good leader can stand up on principle without jeapordizing political strategies.

AdLib4 days ago

can’t always BE us.

choicelady

BUT THEY HAVE SAID IT. If you haven’t heard it, that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

choicelady

What has Schumer said about the ICE assault on people in these Dem cities?

AdLib4 days ago

He had a roaring denunciation about 4 days ago. I don’t know if I saved it on bluesky or not. If so I will send it, but it was powerful!

choicelady

From a Salon article on 1/16: “The leader of Democrats in the Senate, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has also demanded an investigation, but little else. On separate occasions, Schumer blamed the shooting first on a lack of cooperation between ICE officers and local police, and then on a lack of training for ICE agents, though these don’t appear to be new policy proposals.”

AdLib4 days ago

Well, it’s cat feeding time. I am being called by my overlords to do my duty. Wise of you to have a dog. I am merely cat servants.

AdLib4 days ago

The Cat Overlords will not be ignored!

AdLib4 days ago

Salon is not a reliable source. And that was before he zapped ICE and the general illegalities of what they do.

choicelady

Really? I thought Salon was okay?

AdLib4 days ago

No – they don’t bit or scratch EVER, but they have ways of making their wants known rather powerfully. So off I go. Salon is OK. They have their ups and downs. But that was before the denunciation Schumer made. I hope I can find it.
