That is very worrisome, I hope your hubby’s Aunt and cousins are safe and sound. The warnings are very severe, exposure at the coldest would destroy any exposed skin. When we bought this house, I insisted whatever we got had to have alternative heat. Never needed it until three years ago – at which point we didn’t use it for fear all those years of not might create a chimney fire! So now we’re getting it swept and inspected. You just never know when you need it.

We have a wood burning fireplace and use it every Winter. So at least, if there is some kind of disruption in LA, we’ll still have at least one room with heat. You know it’s illegal in CA to build homes anymore with wood burning fireplaces. Yes, gas fireplaces have replaced them but if the gas goes out, like in an earthquake, you’re out of luck.

I do think that Schumer is being way too overcautious about standing up against ICE. Many articles are coming out saying his fear is to be tarred by Repubs as anti-police. In the current climate, that is just plain misguided. Most Americans strongly oppose this gestapo ICE murdering, kidnapping 5 year olds, there is clearly a real hunger by the majority for fighting back against this police state. I think they actually get fascism more than most white Christian types. They are feeling their way at flipping GOP votes because they cannot alienate them. Fascism is what both of them know better than WE do. I’ve watched Black politicians navigate so many crises in just this calm, reserved way at local levels. We don’t get they aren’t able to “code switch” to our wants when to do so costs them a vote, a conversation, a change. I do not need them as my emotional support animals. I need them to be calculating and tactical. And they know as a Jew and a Black man that they carry a heavier burden of convincing the opposition than ANY previous leaders. Well, I don’t think it’s unreasonable or needy to expect the leaders of a party I belong to, to express the same principled outrage that I would to horiffic acts.
