Happy, Merry, Tra-la-la Christmas SallyT! Like you, my dispora of friends are of the same beliefs as me – but they are ALL good people. I accept each and every one just as they are and admire them for all that they do. I feel very fortunate to have them all in my life. My husband has even said, you have beautiful friends.
Your post is so perfect. I can’t hope to enhance upon it.
You sure made me smile – so backatcha! Merry Christmas…..time to open the bottles of ‘good cheer’!

And a Very Happy Christmas to youand your family Kalima.
In the few weeks that I have had the pleasure of “meeting” you, it has indeed been a pleasure. You are quite “something”!

Like you, I never really left the Church either but also have not been for a very, very long time. I can never stop questioning why oh why are ther so many suffering around the world. None of us are spared illness, loss and sadness (including yours truly), but millions suffer in abject poverty and fear at such an unfathomable depths. Like you also, I say my prayers quietly at home.

Peace and every good wish to you.

Nirek, beautifully said. I agree wholeheartedly with your observation of Pope Francis. There is hope with him at the helm.
I was pretty keen about John XXIII as well. A different era but he sure opened the windows and let some fresh in and then that all seemed to fade. I think that Francis is a determined guy and won’t let anything disuade him from opening those windows again. I don’t expect everything I want to be fulfilled but it’s a very good re-start!

I can’t hope to say your last two sentences any better than you.
You are wished the same and Peace on Earth. If only!

Funk, thank you for your good wishes and very good thoughts.
A Very Happy Christmas to you and all those at The Planet.

Very cool Kalima 🙂

Very sadly VB, this did not only pertain to Ireland. More than 100,000 children were sent to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa from the United Kingdom.
Between 1947 and 1967 up to 10,000 children were shipped to Australia.

Parents weren’t told the truth.
Their children lost their real identities and were told they were orphans going on holiday to a place where the sun always shines.
The policy was endorsed by Government of the day.

It was cheaper to send children to Australia than care for them on British soil.It cost £5 a day to care in the UK but only 10 shillings in Australian institutions.
They are called the Lost Generation. When he was a boy, the Church of England told one such boy, Tony Jones, that his parents were dead. That was a lie. When he grew up, the British and Australian governments told him his records didn’t exist. That was another lie.
There are numerous tragic stories like this VB.
I am as abhorred as you about what happened to children and parents in the name of (I don’t know a word that covers it). In my book pure evil.

CL,perfectly stated. This is exactly what I wanted to convey, but you did a much better job than me. I actually used the term “fundamentalist athiesm” when I was discussing this with my husband. I see no difference with that and “bible thumping” from any religion (whatever appropriate metaphor fits here). I have never become involved in a discussion about religion in a forum before. But this was one I could not ignore in all conscience.

Many thanks for that reply Kalima and for putting the particular part into block quotes. I don’t even attend Church but I believe in standing up for principles both mine and for those who don’t have a voice.

Very sorry to hear to are experiencing “shakers”. Being from San Fran I know about them all too well! For some reason when we had little ones everyone seemed relieved as the thought process was that many little ones would relieve pressure and delay the Big One.
Take care. Thoughts are with you. 🙂

Exactly Nirek – thank you!

Smot, there is no reply button to your last comment, so I will reply here.
“no matter how ridiculous they may seem to others ridiculed, and dismissed as fantasy.”? What? I cannot let that slide. You have not been ridiculed for your stand and nor should you be. But I will defend my right not to be ridiculed either. And yet it continues. Sorry, not good enough. You are happy to acknowledge my belief system, but you are under no obligation to respect it? What is that?

Hi Kalima,
I’m pretty sure that your excellent suggestion to re-read the terms of use were not directed at me in this instance. I couldn’t reply back to you down this tread, so hope you receive this. I think that your suggestion may get lost as it was a reply to my comment.
Thank you.

CL, thank you for this post and the reality of what is being done by many. I agree with you 100%.
I have two dear friends who are in the LGBT community. Both are more than 20 years older than me. They are extremely active in their local Methodist Church. At the young ages of 78 and 80 they help feed the homeless and each year they adopt a family for Christmas – this year included. They source out what the family (especially the children) would like for Christmas and off they go shopping for those items! I am so in awe of their energy, their generosity (comfortable, but by no means well off). They do not care what ethenticity or beliefs the family have and are the epitome of people who do good for all. You may want to read my comment a little further up as well. Cheers.

Smot, I’m not about to start a ‘stoush’ with you regarding belief systems. One, because I find it quite boring and two because I have no desire to convince anyone of anything with respect to their personal religious/non-religious beliefs. Having prefaced my comment with this, I have thought about what you have written and I am struck by the possibility that you do not see the irony of you saying that you are:

“…a stone cold, atheist, some might even say I’m an aggressive atheist, and I act more Christlike than 99.9% of the Christians I have ever met in my life. I find them to be disgusting, small minded, vile, people far too worried about nonsense to take seriously. They are all show, and very little substance.”

I am not a particularly religious person, but I do identify with being of the Christian belief system. I therefore, find these comments quite offensive. By contrast I respect everyone’s right to believe in whatever system they want. If you notice I use the word “respect”. I don’t question your beliefs and I don’t use terms like “fairy tales” or “guy in the sky” metaphors. Nor am I intellectually lazy thinking that all the answers lie in a book.
With respect, I think your vilifcation is OTT. I wasn’t going to say anything, but it bothered me that one would have such sweeping statements which border on the extreme.

Stratospherically funny Funk! How did you find this? I’m now going to have GREAT pleasure sending this to ALL my friends and if I want to start a war I might even send to my feral RW brother! Ah well, you can’t pick your relatives!
I really can’t stop laughing at this. Brilliant!

Thanks pinkpanther. Oh, I love your turn of phrase re the GOP/TP. You are spot on!
And yes, it is great to be able to disagree and and follow on and have a conversation without a hint of egregiousness. Is that a word?!

Ah Nirek, you are just a nice guy. I tend to hold their feet to the fire for all Boehner and Co. have done in their delusional recalcitrance for the past 4 years! Aren’t I awful – not!
Cheers friend.

» Posted By Fergie1 On December 18, 2013 @ 6:50 pm

Sorry Nirek, I can’t even agree with John Boehner being given any credit for anything. Why? Because he and Mitch McConnell have used the TPers to block everything and anything, blocking supply with the Government shutdown, with President Obama’s nominees for even the most lowly positions. As you know, a whole list of obstructions. I said to my husband: who is more stupid? Boehner is just now realizing that members in his own party were not reading Bills but voting NO anyway? C’mon! He’s not even a good actor with his faux outrage all of a sudden. Again why? 2014 is a whole lot closer and the GOP is trying to regroup.

Absolutely beautiful kesmarn! Thank you!

» Posted By Fergie1 On December 14, 2013 @ 6:53 am

Ah yes Ad, but although this is not technically 2014 yet, it is closer to the mid-term elections. Watch the GOPers try to play nice and think people will forget what they have and haven’t done for the last five years. After all they are now giving their candidates “sensitivity” training on how to address women and our issues! Ha, sensitivity training? How about some intelligence training?
