obama-letter

Mr. President,

How’s it going? Oh, right, not so great after Tuesday. Well, you’ve still got your health and a valid birth certificate so there’s that. And you’ve got two more years as President so…there’s a lot of natural disasters, epidemic diseases and religiously and ethnically driven conflicts around the world to be blamed for. Sorry, that’s not good either, right?

Well…could be worse. Just watch the next two years, you’ll see I was right.

Now, let’s talk about this Republican takeover of Congress and what you should do. First of all, when the new Senate session starts next year, I’d tell Joe Biden to sneak into Jodi Ernst’s desk and take away any sharp items he finds there. And just for fun, send the FBI to The House to introduce themselves to Michael Grimm…wait, they already know each other, don’t they?

All that aside, what are you going to do now that The Republicans won a wave election? I think the best thing to do is deal with it as fairly and respectfully as the Republicans did when you and Democrats won wave elections in 2008 and 2012. That is, start off saying that you have to do better with voters in getting your message out to them then become intransigent and refuse to work with the Republicans because America made it clear they want a President who’s a Democrat who will be a check on Republicans and represent their values.

I know it doesn’t make a lot of sense to argue that but it worked for Repubs in 2008 and 2012, don’t mess with success.

So, with the election just over, first you gotta shovel out the standard bullshit, talk a lot about wanting to find compromise and ways to work with the other party on issues that are important to all Americans, blah, blah, blah. Mitch and The Boehner will be doing the same and when the cameras are off, you can all have a good laugh about it all and who was more convincing (Boehner will win that one, he can cry on command, especially when he thinks about having to deal with the Tea Party).

When we get into January though, it’s all about keeping up the “Let’s find ways to work together,” crap while the new Republican Congress describes their version of compromise, which usually involves you on all fours with Lindsay Graham spanking you with a frat paddle. Listen to me, you don’t want to go through that because they’ll never let you join their frat anyway. First, you’re the wrong color. Second, you’re the wrong party. Third, their application only has two numerical spaces for “IQ”.

It’s just not going to work out, you should know this from the beginning of the first term and how sore you were from being paddled back then when trying to compromise with Republicans.

As Repubs often say about terrorists, they are now emboldened. Didn’t you hear the first things they said after the election? They vowed to kill your health care law, force the Keystone Pipeline down your throat and Boehner threatened to impeach you if you try to use the same Executive Order powers that Bush and many Presidents before him used freely. You really think these guys will split the dinner check with you at Buca di Beppo? Soon as the check comes, they’re gonna say they need to take a tinkle, head out the back exit and tell the manager that you’re paying the whole thing.

You gotta make them pay for their own orders. They want the pipeline put through, if it happens and contaminates the water supply for many states, you don’t want that showing up on your credit card statement.

And if they want to cut taxes on the wealthy without cutting loopholes so it’s not revenue neutral? You don’t want to get stuck with that bill.

And if they want to let corporations bring money in from overseas without paying tax as any American would, if they want bigger wars in Iraq and Syria, if they want to privatize Social Security and Medicare, if they want to destroy Dodd-Frank and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau…don’t agree to split the check.

Just ask yourself, what would your hero Lincoln do? Would he have said to The South, “Well, okay, if you’re going to insist, you can keep some slaves as long as you agree to reducing student loan interest rates.”

You don’t compromise with wrong and this Repub Congress is all about serving the Kochs and corporations, not the majority of Americans and that’s a big bowl of wrong.

The Repubs have spent your entire six years in office, trying to stop anything good from getting done in this country. Let everyone see them doing that for another two years when they have full control of Congress while you keep proposing and Executive Ordering things that are good.

It’s actually a great opportunity for you to show what you’re made of and what your values are…and as leader of the Democratic Party, what makes Democrats different from Republicans. If you stand up as a principled guardian of American and Progressive values against a powerful Republican Party that controls the entire Congress, you get to be the hero that America needs and you’ll energize Dems and Indies to enthusiastically follow the path you’re leading them on in 2016.

If you instead walk hand and hand with a McConnell in one hand and a Boehner in the other, you’ll find yourself and the Democratic Party stranded in the middle of nowhere as Boehner and McConnell jump in their OldWhiteMalesmobile and drive off together laughing at what a sap you were for trusting them.

Look, the next two years are really just about one thing for the Repubs, what the last six years and most of the years before that were about, winning the next election and having all the power they can have over the country to make themselves and their billionaire buddies wealthier. They have no interest in making the lives of Americans better, just the opposite.

The Republicans who were just elected want to kill the minimum wage, kill the ACA and strip away health insurance from 10 million people, kill regulations on oil companies and banks so they can be free to pollute our environment and strip mine our economy. The list goes on and on and what they want to do would only accelerate the demise of the middle class and a diminish the standard of living for most Americans.

Bottom line Mr. President, I know you think we all want to see you be bipartisan. To a point, yeah, we do but we hate Congress the most and we want them to be bipartisan and compromise. If they don’t, and I’ll take a $3 bet that they won’t, you can’t be a sap and do 100% of the compromising (that’s actually not a valid definition of compromise, it’s defined as surrender).

So, you give them a shot, you try to compromise at first in a way where each side gets something important and of equal value, without giving away a vital organ or anything. And if they won’t compromise or want way too much in return, I’m trying to be as diplomatic as I can about this, especially since they’ve begun by threatening impeachment, but there’s only one thing left to do…

…fuck ’em.

Position yourself and Democrats to fight for the majority of Americans and to retake the Presidency and Senate in 2016. What’s another two more years of no progress on major issues? It won’t be a shock to Americans and it could only help if they want “change” again in Congress.  You can be sure if Dems win in 2016, Republicans won’t compromise, they’ll double down on being The Party of No.

So yeah, my advice when dealing with the Repubs if they refuse to be bipartisan and compromise is “Fuck ’em”. If they try blackmailing you and the country again and shove a repeal of the ACA in a budget bill or deficit ceiling bill, tell the nation how they’re trying to make you and the nation eat a crap sandwich and you won’t do that. Let them have their shutdown over trying to harm Americans, maybe this time it will finally stick in the teflon brains of those who voted for Republicans on Tuesday.

You’re going to have a lot of showdowns over the next two years so keep your pistols loaded, your aim sharp and hold out because as long as you do, the cavalry will come to the rescue in 2016.

“Many of us Canadians are confused by the U.S. midterm elections. Consider, right now in America, corporate profits are at record highs, the country’s adding 200,000 jobs per month, unemployment is below 6%, U.S. gross national product growth is the best of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. The dollar is at its strongest levels in years, the stock market is near record highs, gasoline prices are falling, there’s no inflation, interest rates are the lowest in 30 years, U.S. oil imports are declining, U.S. oil production is rapidly increasing, the deficit is rapidly declining, and the wealthy are still making astonishing amounts of money.

America is leading the world once again and respected internationally — in sharp contrast to the Bush years. Obama brought soldiers home from Iraq and killed Osama bin Laden.

So, Americans vote for the party that got you into the mess that Obama just dug you out of? This defies reason.

When you are done with Obama, could you send him our way?”

Funk, it defies logic, doesn’t it? You would think that the rich would love PBO. You would think that oil corporations would love him, too. So why is it they don’t? It is illogical.

Wouldn’t we just love to have Obama as Prime Minister!!
It would help us with that “thingy;” that Ted Cruz was born in Canada. ;[

Clearly reason is being defied by some Americans. Teapublicans, formerly GOP, are so good at confusion and the art of persuasion re the issues; it exploits that part of an evangelical culture where preachers can work up thousands at a time to a fever pitch, thus getting them to do whatever they want them to do…donate money, vote against their own best interests. This kind of power reminds me of the old movie “Elmer Gantry” played by Burt Lancaster.

Americans love it when their President takes the high road — I think they especially love it when every statement he makes can become an excuse for the opposition psychopaths to take a stand against an issue they previously claimed to own/love.

Is that something Canadians revere above all as well?

Ad…I posted this at yabberz and had an interesting discussion.

My comment…while I do not agree with all that you have said it, the tone is very much in keeping with my mindset.

Obama’s effectiveness in the next two years comes down this: how good i his hardball game. We know he plays chess well- but how are his bareknuckle skills. That is what putting your plan into action will require.

I would also like OBama to make it very clear to the Dems that the base is huge problem: easily swayed, undisciplined, lacking dedication. Turnout out was miserable. The Unions are of no use in most of the country now; a new populist base organization is required that links presidential years to midterms in the minds and hearts of the base.

Just got it on my FB:

I Am Truly Thankful For My President

Millions of dollars & countless man hours have been spent trying to tear him down. What they have yet to realize, is it only strengthens him.

Abandoned by his father to be raised by a single mom & his grand parents. He worked hard & attended Columbia University. Then Harvard Law, where he was president of the Law Review. Later he began teaching at the University of Chicago Law School. He lost his mom to cancer. Then suffered the loss of his grand mother one day before being elected President. Only to be handed one of the worst economic disasters in this nation’s history.
http://www.addictinginfo.org/…/its-official-president-obam…/

Faced with an opposing Party bent on stopping his success at all cost. He has endured an onslaught of character attacks, misinformation & hatred. Which started before he even took office. Yet he has shown nothing but dignity, intelligence, & grace through it all. A testament to the dept & strength of his character, and will solidify his place in history as one of this nation’s greatest. He has turned the economy around, saved our auto industry and given us heath care. Something Presidents from both parties have been trying to do since 1912.
http://www.lovebscott.com/…/rolling-stone-names-president-o…

He has stood up for women & equality. Gone to bat for our troops & veterans. This POTUS has eliminated those who would threaten our safety. He is now the most respected leader on the world stage. This man not only understands the American dream, he is fighting to defend it. For he has lived it. In fact, Ann’s little boy has grown up to be the embodiment of The American Dream. The 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama an American hero.

President Obama will go down in history as a great American, an embattled President, and a contradiction in terms because he has had to do many things I do not believe he would have done if he had been that monarch that the right seems to think he is trying to be. I applaud the successes he has been allowed, grieve with him because of the ignorance that continues to envelope this nation where race is concerned, and will continue to pray for his continued enlightenment when it comes to dealing with his opposition and when he makes decisions for the people of this nation and the world.

It’s difficult to be a legend in your own time but that is what the President is, a Legend in his own time. He wears it well. Too bad some have to wait for historians to tell the story. I’m so glad I am living in this time so that I can see it for myself. Long live the President of the United States of America, President Barrack Hussein Obama!!!!!!!

I was wondering what would happen if President Obama signed an executive order stating that any states that allow fracking on their land will get NO help from FEMA or the Federal Government if said states find themselves without drinking water due to it being poisoned by the chemicals used in fracking. You break it, you bought it.

JJ, that would be interesting, but America can’t do such things. It is in America’s DNA to help others, even if they did something stupid to get into a mess.

jjgravitas

Yeah, I know, but that’s the rub, isn’t it? The oil companies drill and frack away, causing oil leaks, earthquakes, destroying water supplies and ecosystems, ruining the lives of millions. Then the Feds are required to come in and help fix the disaster, and be criticized if someone decides their assistance is unsatisfactory. And the oil companies? They continue to deposit their profits, maybe pay some fines, maybe set up a foundation to help pay for the damage they’ve caused if it was really big. I guess it’s worth it for the kind of profits you can get from petroleum.

Nirek
Member

JJ, don’t take what I say wrong, I agree that fracking is damaging but we can’t let it ruin the water.

I’m really on your side here.

monicaangela
Member

Wouldn’t it be better if the people of the nation rose up and prevented Fracking in every state? We aren’t powerless you know, we just have to stick together. Some areas in many states have already placed initiatives on the ballot to prevent fracking. I believe citizens in all states would agree to ban fracking if we were only allowed to educate the populace and stop the misinformation and outright lies from corporate America and the MSM.

jjgravitas
Member
jjgravitas

Monicaangela, you’re right it would definitely be much better if people, the public, just banned fracking altogether before the disasters started happening. I’ve put my idea out there hoping it would float around and get more people to think about how fracking affects the community at large, rather than just the areas where it happens.

EXFANOFARIANA
Member
EXFANOFARIANA

MA, remember that mofo CEO of a fracking company filing a law suit to ban it from it’s property?

monicaangela
Member

I sure do, Rex Tillerson, Exxon CEO joined a lawsuit that cites fracking’s consequences in order to block the construction of a 160-foot water tower next to his and his wife’s Texas home. Strange thing is, Rex Tillerson’s job has been to promote the hydraulic fracking which has enabled the recent oil and gas boom, he is also in charge of fighting regulatory oversight, except of course when the fracking gets too close to his property. LOL!! Corporate hypocrites are precious aren’t they? 🙂

Nirek
Member

Monica, we are fighting fracking here in Vermont. Also a pipeline to NY under Lake Champlain carrying fracked gas.

monicaangela
Member

Residents of Athens, Ohio voted overwhelmingly in Tuesday’s election to ban fracking and related oil and gas activity, although there is no fracking well in the city. Similar measures were voted down on Tuesday in Youngstown, Kent and Gates Mills, a village outside Cleveland.

In Ohio, such measures have passed in Broadview Heights, Mansfield, Oberlin and Yellow Springs. I am hoping that eventually fracking will be banned in the entire state. I believe the citizens of Ohio are awake on this issue. Too bad we have to fight this issue city by city, county by county in whichever way we can.

I really wish there were a way to place this issue on a ballot that would be voted upon by every voter in the entire state…I’m sure that if it was, it would pass. As a matter of fact, I wish this issue would be placed on the ballot in every state, or even better, that this would become a federal issue and in the 2016 election would be on the ballot for the entire country to vote on. I don’t believe the electorate wants to see fracking in this nation and would bet the issue would pass overwhelmingly.

Nirek
Member

Monica, I agree that it should be voted on. However we know there are many people who don’t care about the environment like we do. Gas prices are down and they are saying that it is because of the glut of fracked gas. Fracked gas costs more but it has lowered prices which bothers producers of the stuff.
Hold on for this ride. There will be lobbying for more gas and oil production and this congress will push through any and all non regulations proposed.

And another thing! Boehner said, that his members will move to repeal the Affordable Care Act, even if such a bill won’t pass the Senate or be signed by the President. The gall of the man. So he wants to spend more wasted time and money which benefits Americans, on working to repeal the ACA, even though he knows it can’t be done. In a nutshell (pun intended), what does this tell you about how the Republicans are going to proceed.

Mr. President, don’t waste your time or energy.

I sincerely hope that The President sticks to his principles, uses his veto and executive order powers. Enough is enough. And if those who were too apathetic and lazy to vote don’t like it, tough titties!

It takes a lot to disgust me but these results, the wishy-washy, cowardly Dem campaigns and those doing another 2010 by not bothering to vote, brought the bile to my throat. WTF is wrong with these people?? Are they in a coma?

Kalima

One good laugh deserves another. 🙂

I have friends all over America who have been suffering through Repub legislation in their states, then the voters don’t get off their arses to even vote, therefore making it even tougher for millions. How can you understand that or even reconcile this behaviour? Only thing that makes sense apart from the obvious complacency, is that those people are not suffering as much as their average countrymen and women. I’m alright Jack!!

goleafsgo
Member
goleafsgo

Kalima, it is hard to understand. Perhaps those who are suffering so much really believe it is their own fault. They have been told so often that they should pull themselves up by their bootstraps, and that if they do not have a job, it is their own fault. The guilt of their circumstances is laid on pretty thick in the election mode media and by local politicians, and from the pulpit. When teapublicans tell them the Dems are taking away jobs; that a minimum wage policy will cost jobs and make retailers raise prices. That a vote for a Dem is a vote to increase unemployment through immigration legislation as those aliens flood the border and take what is rightfully theirs.

Being uninformed is exactly what makes Teapublicans successful at the polls. These people who are suffering from low wages, no jobs, and fear of a onslaught of immigrants makes people vote against their best interests, because they do not know it is against their best interests.

Does that make any sense?

Kalima

Hello goleafsgo, nice to finally meet you.

Yes the GOPTP has done a grand job of victimising the poor and needy by telling them endless lies about Obama. I don’t hold up much hope of changing many minds when people are not interested in accepting the truth or have hate in their hearts so let people brainwash them instead. It’s just so much easier to be told what to do.

My real beef is with those who are doing ok, have a job and healthcare but didn’t bother to vote anyway because the plight of others didn’t concern them. Now the President’s job became that much harder, as if his six years so far haven’t been hard enough already. The one thing a person can do to try improve things in government is to vote, and not voting for any reason other than ill health or being dead, is unforgivable.

I live in a country where I can’t vote because I’m not a citizen but would vote in a heartbeat if I could.

Kalima, late to your comment but boy oh boy am I in the same camp. I voted, I contributed to the begging, weak kneed bums running from Obama but I told every one who called that the democrats were giving minorities absolutely no reason to vote; they won’t support the president, they don’t inform voters about their key legislation for women, children and healthcare. How does a base support that and the yet GOP always supports their base. I don’t think I’ve ever been as angry at my party as I have been this season. And with impeachment threats running rampant, I’m not sure what I’ll do if they can’t stand up straight. (Well, it seems frustration is difficult to keep coherent ;-))

I completely support the President and the Democratic Party. I was very busy on Tuesday but I made the time to get to the polls and cast my vote: I was expecting a lot of people due to what I was hearing about the rest of the country. But there were very few people there, and there were no solicitors out front, which I thought was odd. The mood of some of the people there was a bit gloomy, which I didn’t understand until the next day when I heard that voter turnout was so extremely low. Now I never thought of myself as a political junky, I just pay attention. But I never thought that people would care so little as to let the incompetent GOP just take over by default. And make no mistake: the GOP did so well because so many Democrats stayed home.

Right there with you jjgravitas. I have faith in President Obama and it has not been shaken. Spandan over at The Peoples View has detailed time and time again out President Obama has outsmarted Boehner and the Republicans. Of course, you never here this in the MSM. I don’t buy into the meme that the President has caved to the Republicans. Pelosi and Reid know how to count votes and so does the President. Sure he’s had to compromise. Name me a president who hasn’t. But the truth is anybody paying attention knows he’s come out with the better of the deals.

I sure hope he reads that letter on AirForce One as he makes his way to Asia. I also hope he takes your advice and does what you say, and whatever he can through executive order to improve the nation. Sure hope he doesn’t sign TPP into law or allow the new congress to talk him into signing legislation that will allow the construction of the Keystone Pipeline. I also hope he will fight hard to make sure the new republican congress does not do away with the Affordable Care Act Mandate. I guess I hope that during these last two years he decides to stop playing political baseball and using more of his time to think of the many children like the two he has and with them in mind try to work to make sure he does everything in his power to guarantee a better future for that generation and every generation that will follow them.

Super post AdLib, YOUR spot on. The only things you left out is veto a lot and do use executive orders and raise the SS TAX to the top earners. THe reason they can not impeach him for doing his job. If they take it to the supreme court? THe Supreme court would have to revue every executive order ever made and every veto ever made.

I would give you a 6 vote if it was possible.
