The demolition derby that is the GOP Presidential primary reaches a pivotal point tonight, Mitt Romney may once again be the inevitable candidate…which is of course oxymoronic (emphasis on the “moronic”).

Can Rick Santorum pull out victories in Ohio and Tennessee (are there that many people who believe that the sun revolves around the Earth?)?

Will Newt win big in Georgia (actually, from the looks of his physique, he apparently won “big” a long time ago)?

Join us tonight for a live blog of the night’s results. Polls begin closing at 5:00 pm PST/8:00 pm EST. Feel free to blog about the primary in the meantime. See you then!

Regardless PolitiFact, President Obama got more votes than any of the Repubs candidates. These votes show that people will come out to vote for the President even when the vote is just symbolic. I hope they will do it again come November when those votes will really count! I think this is a good sign! 🙂

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/mar/07/david-axelrod/david-axelrod-says-barack-obama-won-more-ohio-vote/

KQµårk 死神

I heard that it was a classic misspeak but politifact makes it a big deal but when Ryan lies and calls the country mostly conservative they call it a half-truth. We have to understand that the St. Pete Times is a right wing paper.

SallyT
Member

KQ, they are JERKS! Yes it was a “misspeak” but Axelrod was the bigger person. Did you see the note at the bottom of the article? It says:

UPDATE: Shortly after we posted the item, Axelrod tweeted to take responsibility for his error: “Guilty as charged! I misspoke during an interview last night and PolitiFact rightly called me on it..”

Jerks! But, Obama still got the most votes!!!!

KQµårk 死神
Member

Yup Exactly! I think the other thing Axelrod had rolling around in his head was that Obama got more than Romney and Santorum got combined in 2008 when it was a contested primary. He got over a million votes back then even though he lost to Hillary.

The point was enthusiasm for Obama and the president is much higher than that for the GOP candidates. Believe me if a Repug made that statement poltifact would call it half true. Worse they would never correct the error like Axelrod did.

The loss by Kucinich may help make an essential point about the place of progressive politics in America. Dennis used to be the blue collar advocate, the man who championed really good causes. Whatever happened to him, he took a turn that many have taken to supporting wacko ideas that have no bearing on or are inimical to the fortunes of the working families of America.

When I worked with the single payer folks in CA, all was well until President Obama’s health reform. The snarling disagreements went so far as to demand it be abolished and that we wait and get a GOOD program of single payer. Some of this came from physicians who were perfectly happy to let the uninsured STAY uninsured. That was beyond my ability to take it in – you’d let people DIE just to get ideological purity????? Hippocrates is spinning.

When Cynthia McKinney embraced Khaddafi, Kucinich defends Assad, the left calls – without clarity – for bringing down capitalism, when white privileged people disdain blue collar workers and their work, when environmentalists call for shutting rather than greening industrial plants, when white people tell Black people to ‘get over being Black’, when urbaniste yuppies laugh at farmers and sneer at anyone of faith, the put a stake in the heart of the progressive movement.

I believe America is almost always a center-Left country. It moves right if and only if those in the center feel utterly abandoned by their government, by Dems, by liberals and certainly by progressives. The work by progressives is to keep our collective eyes on human impacts of all we do, keep a promise not to sacrifice anyone to our cause but be mindful of consequences and help people through hard change. We need to stop being snobs, snots, elitists, and dumb.

Progress comes when we build it together, not when we impose it from a few. Progress means being inclusive and listening to the fears of change people have. It doesn’t make them stupid or conservative. It means they are simply scared of what they do not yet understand. Progressives also have to stop grandstanding. Who in their right mind defends brutal dictators? The Right does it with impunity. The Left better damn well NOT.

So the Progressive Caucus is now down by one member. I’d dispute Dennis was still progressive as opposed to just egocentric and outrageous lately, but still – read voters’ lips, progressives. No more extremism. Progressive should mean we care about one another. If our policies don’t include having progressive value for others, then our position is just a pose, not real, and it deserves to die. The rest of us will carry on even if you think we sold out. Ideological purity never won anything. Hard work and cooperation with diverse others does – every single time.

Another great post, Choicelady. Sadly, I see almost as much narrow-minded bigotry on the left fringe as I do on the right fringe. The fringers can’t handle democracy, which is the art of compromise.

KQµårk 死神

Many great points CL per usual.

Kucinich like too many progressives forget there roots like being an advocate for workers and especially focusing on their constituents. When Kucinich became a progressive media darling it was all over for him. His views became more polarized and controversial because he was no longer working for his constituents and instead he was playing to his outrage loving progressive media fans. The same thing happened to a lesser degree with Grayson and Feingold. They start believing they can do no wrong because after all they were part of the progressive group thinking echo chamber who are so smug. Then they not only tune out moderates but start calling moderates part of the problem alienating them completely. Unfortunately for them moderates make up most of the electorate even in most of their districts. The right wing can get away with that in some gerrymandered districts but once progressives go too far left they are gone.

Kucinich first almost lost me when he said he was going to vote against the ACA but he did the right thing even if for the wrong reason. I mean his old district more than most will benefit from the ACA just by so many people being eligible for Medicaid. Then of course he totally lost me when he said he wanted to impeach Obama over Libya. To me our treaty with the UN security counsel precedes even our law especially when you have a congress that is so constipated that it cannot even hold a vote for a limited military role. Congress never declared war against Korea because it was a UN action FFS. And Kucinich was going to impeach Obama over it. That was the last straw.

Excellent post. You stated what I have been thinking and voicing so many times. Often I have been put down for saying it which was a bit mind blowing. Some of the same people putting me down are the so called progressives who in the past supported Reagan. I remember them telling me I needed to change and they put me down for NOT supporting Reagan.

Many like Kucinich became ineffective for the reasons you stated. It seemed they became content to make speeches and then walk away from the gritty work that had to be done. Work that sometimes involved compromise and slow change. I can only imagine if they had been around in the sixties. I guess they wouldn’t have supported the original Civil Rights Act because it didn’t include everything they wanted all at once.

I am also impatient for change and progression but I also have spent time talking to people, real people. I sometimes find the rightwing and self destructive views of too many Americans to be frightening. They actually believe in and support things that are against their own best interest. We have people in this country who depend on social security and yet vote for candidates who openly state they want to end social security. Fighting that type of mindset is not easy and yet people like Kucinich thought all it took was his talking about his ideology. Many progressives in congress are also living in a bubble. Time for them to do what they use to do best. Get back out here and connect with real people.

Darn where is Kes? I wanted to congratulate her on Marcy Kaptur win. I know she was fond of her. Hope all is going well over here. Been on twitter sporadically but dealing with a serious family illness right now. Trying to keep up with the race but perhaps it is better this way my flat screen is not in jeopardy everytime the clown car says something untrue about President Obama/

And yes, lazy effing MSM it is President Obama not Mr Obama you lazy ass trolls.

BFF! I was being held captive by sick people!! They wouldn’t let me go!!

As you can see below, I thought Marcy had lost! And then to come home and discover she’d WON!! I am beyond thrilled.

But not so thrilled that I failed to notice you said “serious family illness” there. I hope things are going a little better now? If they would be welcome, prayers will be sent in your direction, BFF. Keep us posted.

A win for Kaptur is a loss for al-Assad as far as I’m concerned. This makes it even easier to beat Joe the not Real Plumber as far as I’m concerned, as well.

SueInCa

Can I ask who al-Assad is?

kesmarn

He’s the head honcho in Syria, BFF. And Marcy castigated Kucinich for “shaking the bloody hand of Assad.” He is not a nice guy!

SueInCa

Thanks BFF I do know that one. Not thinking real straight I thought he might be referring to someone in Ohio I was not aware of.

Khirad

The guy responsible for 7,500 (when they stopped counting, prolly closer to 10,000) of his own citizens’ lives so far in Syria.

Kucinich tried defending him.

I’d forgiven his eccentricities before then, but he was dead to me at that point.

SueInCa

Oh jesus of course. I heard Todd the wimp on MSnbc today lamenting the genocide going on and felt like saying where were you on Darfur? I don’t get it No matter where people are being wiped out is a crime against humanity but it seems our world is always a day late and a dollar short in responding.

choicelady

Seriously? Kucinich said THAT? Wow – he’s turned a very dark corner. Huge loss, IMHO – he used to be amazingly wonderful.

Glad he lost.

kesmarn

I agree. Kucinich would have looked small, elderly and spacey next to the beefy and solidly blue-collar looking Wurzelbacher. I think Joe might have won, to be frank!

But Kaptur is super-smart and never, ever lets herself get baited into saying stupid things or losing her temper. She does well in debates, because she’s calm but not wimpy.

Khirad
Member

That was what I left unsaid Kes, because it was my impression, but I wasn’t sure it was the right one.

I think, though Wurzelbacher is a loon himself, that he could have played against Kucinich’s persona.

Kaptur takes that away from him, and yes, I’ve seen her debate, maybe from your links in the past – or just C-Span, and she is efficient. That’s the word I’d use to describe her debating skill.

I don’t want to pile on too much but Kucinich ended up being more of a thorn than a rose with some of his ideological stubbornness. He did’t vote for the climate change bill and other legislation because it was not progressive enough. It was hard enough for Dems to pass legislation with the party of no let alone someone from your own party fragging it.

It’s perfectly acceptable, actually. Remember how many times the news referred to Mr. Bush?

I know they hate showing him any respect, but the weasels have found a way out on this one.

Technically it is Mister President in informal address, but Mr. Obama is also correct.

Just saying, fair is fair. I rarely ever wrote out President Bush. Bush II was just easier.

choicelady

I saw Kaptur won – and her working family credentials are impeccable. I wish she were more prochoice (she excoriated Rush on contraception NOT just his despicable behavior) but I will live with it. She did vote for health care reform and accepted the reality that the Hyde Amendment removed all doubts about abortion. That aside, she’s extremely solid.

So hats off to kes who wanted Kaptur!!! I hope when she gets home tonight, it will be a GREAT evening of rest and happiness!

I cannot believe Dennis is so petty that he’d not even congratulate Kaptur. I used to like him, met him once at the CA Dem Convention, and I’m sorry he’s turned out to be such a lemon sucker.

Chernynkaya

I love that “lemon sucker,” C’Lady. Yeah, I’ll take a moderate and pragmatic Dem over an ideologue any day.

kesmarn
Admin

Oh,c’lady!!! I just got home from work and turned to the Planet for news. I was so bummed at work because the only news I had was a brief glimpse at one patient’s TV ad the crawl showed Kucinich in the lead at that point!

I was appalled. On the way home I could only think of what a tremendous loss to Congress this was — of a brilliant mind, an original and principled thinker, and a kind woman.

So – gasp! — to get home and discover she’d won! What a gift. And even on the abortion issue, I sense she really respects dissenting views. If I might presume to speak for her, I think she actually does believe that abortion is wrong except to preserve the life/health of the mother. That’s her personal belief. But there’s an active and open abortion clinic in Toledo and I’ve never heard her say a negative word about it or make the slightest move to interfere with its operation. Maybe I’m giving her too much credit, but she has done such an amazing amount of good for this area that she is truly beloved. The unions love her. The Muslin community loves her. The local NAACP gave her a strong endorsement. And on and on. There have been elections in which she’s gotten 70% of the vote.

I SO did not want to lose her. Even though I have been gerrymandered out of her district. If someone had to go, I’m relieved it was Kucinich. He’s had his good moments. But right now he’s too much of a space cadet to go up against Joe the Plumber.

Santorum-OK, TN, ND

choicelady

I know, kes (see Sue and Cher above- we ALL do it!) and was so happy for YOU because you like her so much!

There are anti-abortion zealots who basically hate women, even when they are women, and there are pro-life people who honestly believe in the sanctity of life, womb to tomb. She is the latter. I can live with that because it is also a version of pro-women views. She does NOT believe when you’re born the warranty on your value runs out. Her compassion for all people is real, and her support for revitalizing manufacturing is very important to our future.

GLAD she won, and even more glad you came home to such GOOD news! We live vicariously through you, good friend!

kesmarn
Admin

That’s ridiculous, Cher…not you, of course! But the statement by Kucinich.

His people ran an ad that called her a liar for saying that she still lived in the house she grew up in. (They maintained that she lived in “a fancy condo” in Washington.) WELL SHE DOES! When she’s here in town, she stays in the modest home she grew up in, in a blue collar area of town. Yes she does have a place (a condo) in DC. What Congressperson doesn’t?? Is she supposed to sleep on a cot in her office or rent a hotel room every time Congress is in session?

She has turned down pay increases in the past (or turned them over to charity), drives an older car and lives modestly. If anyone was stretching the truth, it was the Kucinich people.

But truly the worst candidate in the bunch was a guy named Graham Veysey. He ran against them both on what I called the “I hate old people” platform. He had about 3 minutes of canned rhetoric on how ancient both Kaptur and Kucinich were. (Has he ever read that seniority is actually an advantage in Congress?) And that DC needed his “fresh face.” It was all about the deficit and how this was the primary problem we faced as a nation. He just kept saying the same sound bites over and over again. I swear he was a 29 year old teabagger plant. No actual idea ever came out of his fresh face. One debate was all I could stand of him. He apparently has never held a real job.

Chernynkaya
Member

Oh hey, kes! I’m very glad Kaptur won, although probably not a thrilled as you, just because I’m not in Ohio. I was so rooting for her. And the fact that she will be running against Joe the Plunger in the general is icing on the cake. I am not at all sure that Kuchinich could win against that turd. In a funny way the Kaptur/Wertzlebacher race is a microcosm of the Presidential race: a towering redwood against a weed. It’s an insult to her that she even needs to deign to debate him. But good for us!

I never completely agreed with Kucinich 100% but he did have some good ideas many years ago. I don’t know what happened to him but in recent years I lost a lot of respect for him. It seems he had a hard time recognizing who his real enemies were. He started attacking anyone who didn’t agree with him 100%. Pretty sad because there was a time I thought he had a chance to make a positive impact.

I guess with the passing of Ted Kennedy the days of liberals knowing how to fight and win small but significant victories is gone. He wasn’t a perfect man but he got a lot done and I miss him.

SallyT

Kucinich had some time in the sun way back there but he stayed to long and his brain apparently fried. Oh well, he still has his trophy wife to keep him company and dry his tears. (If she stays now…..)
Ted Kennedy is missed by me, too, Lalalu. Especially during all this war on women issues. He did fight to help us often.

Chernynkaya

As I think about it–election fun aside–it’s really truly horrific that Santorum has so many people who think he’s worthy of anything but derision. I mean, my god, the man is a zealot, a homophobe, a misogynist and overall hater. I know he can’t win the general, but it is awfully troubling how many maniacs there are.

choicelady
Member

The key issue we need to focus on is not his trogolodyte ideas about religion and reproduction but on his plans for rebuilding manufacturing. They are based entirely on tax cuts and deregulation for corporations. Should he – GOD FORBID – win the nomination, he MUST be called out on his using blue collar working people to promote tax cuts for the rich.

It’s not that we don’t look after his pre-Gallileo mentality on other issues – but the one thing that can resonate with blue collar people would be some kind of message about “putting working people back to work.” The key issue is HOW and it needs to be made crystal clear that unlike Obama who has magnificent tax plans that do NOT reward finance capital but help invest in manufacturing, Santorum’s plans are all giveaways to existing corporations. AND he’s virulently anti-union.

Chernynkaya

Spot on, C’Lady. That’s how to win the blue collar vote. We won’t change their socially conservative views. Never happens. But they can be brought along through their pocketbooks.

This is bitterly embarrassing for Romney. How could he be losing to the guy who’s running his campaign worse than Lucy ran the chocolate conveyor belt? (analogy for the boomers on the board) There is going to be a lot of introspection going on in all the camps tonight. (Except for Paul, who is in no need of introspection)

Next races:

Kansas – 40 – Santorum easily

Alabama – 50 – Gingrich (if he stays in. He looks exhausted having to work for a living)

Hawaii – 20 – Romney

Mississippi – 40 – Gingrich

Missouri – 52 – Santorum (for realzies this time)

Louisiana – 46 – Santorum probably

Illinois – 69 – Santorum

DC – 18 – Romney

Maryland – 37 – Romney

Wisconsin – 42 – Santorum

All of this by April 3rd!

After that Romney has another Super Tuesday with New York, Conn., Rhode Island, Delaware, and possibly Pennsylvania

This is gonna be really ugly between April 3rd: Wisconsin and April 24th: New York. No contests and plenty of time to savage each other.

Great homework. Funk.

A little spin.

Tonight earlier I was getting e mails urging the Missouri Caucus Delegates to move to Gingrich base on his GA win….now they have flipped back to Santorum.

There is a sense that Mo. can/should drag Romney down….anyone but Romney seems to include the mantra of better to lose than for Romney to win….very bitter and heartfelt here.

funksands

Murph, I don’t think MO would ever go for Romney. That’s interesting that you are sensing that mood. I think it is shared in a lot of states. Look at how well Santorum is polling in Wisconsin for example.

MurphTheSurf3

Funk….I spoke with a GOP chairman a couple days ago and he said that he would rather see Romeny lose than win since a Romney win would destroy the newly emerging, ultra conservative, socially traditional GOP. AND HE IS A MORMON…anathema!

Don’t think he’s an outlier. The chairs of these county parties really represent the voters.

And he’ll win just big enough to garner all 32 delegates but the margin of victory will be by about 1.6 percent.
