Worldwide debt
Today the so-called “super committee” failed to reach agreement on how to reduce the U.S. deficit. Here’s how the major news outlets presented the story.

ABC News

President Obama said today he will veto any efforts to get rid of the automatic spending cuts that will be triggered by the supercommittee’s failure to reach a bipartisan solution to deficit reduction.

New York Times

WASHINGTON — The latest Congressional failure to agree on a plan for balancing the government’s books could yield a surprising result: a sharp reduction in annual federal deficits, larger than anything contemplated by the special panel that reached its fruitless finale on Monday.

MSNBC — from AP

WASHINGTON — Don’t look for the Pentagon to shut down one side of its famous five-sided building. Don’t expect the Education Department to pull back its grants just yet.

CBS News

After more than three months of negotiations, the congressional supercommittee announced Monday that it would not be able to reach a deal to reduce the deficit by the group’s midnight deadline, citing “inability to bridge the committee’s significant differences.”

CNN

Washington (CNN) — President Barack Obama and congressional leaders traded blame Monday for the failure of the congressional “super committee” to forge a deficit reduction deal, but they also called for Congress to work out an agreement before painful automatic budget cuts take place in 2013.

Washington Post

A special congressional committee created to try to curb the national debt abandoned its work and conceded failure Monday, the latest setback in a long effort by Washington to overcome ideological differences and stem the rising tide of red ink.

Fox News

After months of bipartisan debt-reduction talks, the Super Committee said Monday that it will be unable to agree on terms to save $1.2 trillion over 10 years by tonight’s midnight deadline.

Huffington Post

WASHINGTON — An ill-conceived scheme to make an end run around public opposition to major spending cuts to entitlement and social programs has foundered, with leaders of both parties huddling through the weekend to come to terms on a joint explanation for the spectacular failure of the super committee.

Welcome back e’cat. Rashomon has been greatly missed, it’s good to see it back, and thank you.

E’cat, Kudos for choosing such a fitting title for the media’s mishegas! Rashomon indeed! Truth is the abandoned infant!

I expected this talking shop to ‘fail’. I see no reason to expect anything else as none of them can agree on anything. They may even didagree on the time of day.

I think that PBO has played this well.

Excellent job, escribacat! I’ll have to catch up on the rest of the epic tale, now.

Lawrence O’Donnell tonight made a good argument that the outcome of this stalemate is actually a win for President Obama — the entitlement programs were largely sheltered from the deeper cuts they might have gotten under the supercommittee, and if Obama does nothing at all the Clinton tax rates will return and start bringing in revenue, finally.

Hi WW!

I was really proud of the Prez today when he made his statement! Priceless!

Sorry about the ad at the beginning of this, but it’s worth watching!

EDIT: Oh crap! I don’t think the link is working. I’ll try to fix it!

No problem, I caught it earlier and it’s been repeated several times.

Yes, the president looked pretty serene, didn’t he? The man knows what he’s doing.

WW, I loved it when he told them his answer was “No.” He didn’t embellish it…just “no”! That was great! The man is amazing with his 3-D chess.

Emerald, check out the related posts above to see some of Escribacat’s previous editions of Rashomon. It’s a great and concise way of making clear the agendas and spin of media entities.

Great work e’cat, ole Rasho has been missed and what would us libs ever do without that liberal HuffPo? 😆 A collection of Ziggy cartoons has more truth in it than their headlines and stories, hands down.

WOO HOO!! The return of Rashomon!!! Love it Escribacat!

As usual, HP pours on heaping helpings of hot button adjectives where most other news organizations seem to somehow tell the same story without them.

This was a brilliant response by Obama, he and the Dems are finally negotiating from a position of strength and slapping the Repubs’ hands, “Ah-ah-ah, no you can’t just cheat on your test!”

Very pleased with Obama…and having a new edition of Rashomon!

Ole Arianna has her man at the top now, she will abandon any pretense of progressive.

She did that a year ago. Sure hope she donates as much of her money as she can in Newt, be great to see both of them lose.

Oh how can we ever forget this, Sue?

Rashomon is a short, tall, old, young, man, woman. At least that’s what I hear.
