This year the Olympics are going Youtube !

What music goes thru your head when you are speeding down the Super G?

or ripping it up on the Half Pipe ?

What makes your triple axel rock ?

How do you get in the mood for curling?

If you did one of the sports which one would it be?

Name some of the music that would be in your Ipod to get you pumped up?

After winning the Gold,

What songs do you celebrate with ?

Did you have a good time in Van, Pepe?? I’m sorry (there I go – being a Canadian) there had to be a winner and a loser – it was a great game and I wish they had ALL won gold!!

Well I’m out for a little while. Time to watch Canada play Slovakia. We are all Slovaks now.

Am a Canadian French and my great-great-great come over from France and married an Indian from Canada, and then my father married an Austrian American, and my mother’s parents came over right when Hitler was coming into power.

I’m an American with a Heinz 57 past.

And both of my parents, their second language was English.

I grew up in a multi-lingual household.

I love Canada and Canadians, except when we the USA plays them in hockey. 😉

My first memory of the Olympics was watching it on a black and white TV, and sitting on the floor in the living room and watching Peggy Fleming, when she was 15?
And she fell, but she came back 4 years later to win the Gold.

Are my memories incorrect?

Remember during the Carter years how politics entered into it, and they canceled the games?

Or is my memory failing me again.

Remember when the US hockey team won the Olympics and how our nation was riveted to those games?
That was in the 70’s, right?

Remember Munich, and when there were athletes killed?

My memory is shot, and I actually like that, because I want to forget, but the Olympics live forever.

Unfortunately Munich was the first Olympics I really remembered because I was just turning 10 when that happened.

Whoa, okay, I get it now.

😆 at least they don’t do some nationalist gesture like most of the US athletes when they play it. I know this is not about politics but that bugs me for some reason. People seem to forget the early Nazi salute was to tap you hand to your heart and raise your arm forward which represented giving your heart to Hitler.

Anyway Canada has a beautiful national anthem. I learned it very young because almost every summer we went to a lake near Ottawa where my uncle had a lodge.

Do you remember when a basketball team won the gold and raised their arms in a black power salute, and all the hoopla about that?

Did they lose their medals from that? do you remember?

bito

!968, Mexico City. It was the mile relay team and yes, I think they did lose their medals, not sure. I do remember that they got a bunch of grief.

Thanks BT, I got the wrong race, but I can still remember that. Quite the shocker.

KQµårk 死神

Yup I remember it quite well and I applauded it even at that time even though I didn’t know why. I can’t believe they stripped them of their medals. It was complete bullshit.

Yup and I remember that the ref was from s Soviet block country that gave the Russia the gold medal. In 2002 I saw a 30 year anniversary special on that game and many of the American players are still bitter about it and still don’t want their silver medals even though the IOC has been holding them for them all these years.

Chernynkaya

KQ– I think the athletes who do that are confused and probably think it’s the same thing you do with the Pledge of Allegiance. And yes, it drives me nuts!

I do like Oh Canada! But as for me, I wish more French won only so that I could hear my all-time fave national anthem: La Marseillaise!

And who could ever forget this scene that brings tears to my eyes EVERY TIME!

😎 thread Patsy. I’ve been watching more of the Olympics than I thought I would. I watch the hockey of course because I’m a big hockey fan and the US is doing good this year but I love the energy and creativity in some of the newer sports you mentioned.

Here’s a great tribute video to Shaun White who is ultra rad.

I’ve always been a closet figure skating fan during the Olympics and oh yeah I even watched some curling. Get the rock in the house on the button!

KQ, The Tomato, and he hates that name, and there’s been tragedy lately associated with that sport, but that’s one of our favorites.

I love the Olympics, even though they are always a losing thing for the host cities.

And I’m a skater in my dreams, too.

Joannie Rochette is a wonderful and moving story.

As a kid the Olympics were it for me because I did all the field sports like discus, javelin and shot-put, but the commercialization of the Olympics during the 80’s really turned me off. Now the last two Olympics (Summer 2008 and Winter 2010) are the first ones I’ve watched more of in a while. Not to mention I was not feeling too good about the US during the Bush years either.

Poor kid he’s awesome on his board but looks like carrot top. Then again Tony Hawk is goofy looking too.

Yeah–poor kid! (You and I should be so poor.)

I think he looks cute. Have you seen Carrot Top lately? Something really weird going on with him! Steroids, I think.

I know can you believe that? I’m uber jealous. I watched the last US game in our local Irish Pub earlier so I’ll probably catch the finals there as well. Now it’s a jinx thing. Well it’s a good excuse to throw back a few black and tans anyway.

Better than that they have a drink called the Irish bomb which is pint of Guinness with a shot of Micheal Collin’s Irish Whiskey and Bailey’s Irish Cream.

KQ, the recruiters for the Blackhawks used to come out to the pond and watch me play hockey. 😆

KQµårk 死神

Your kidding me dude.

Did you grow up in the Upper Midwest or NE? When I was school age those were the only places in the US that generated hockey players. I went to college in upstate NY where the only sport our school was good at was hockey. It was hilarious because most of the players were Canucks and in Western Civ I would help them catch up on the reading we were suppose to do for home work. They were great guys but were really only going to school to play hockey and drink. Also when I started working in NJ our company had season tickets for the Devils. So from college on I’ve been hooked.

KQ, I grew up in northern Indiana, not like the hockey area like you. but one of the four TV stations(WGN) showed all the Blackhawks. I never played organized hockey, quite the opposite, but every winter I remember testing the pond, shoveling off a rink and the seasons first groin pull. Of course, we we all Bobby Hull or Stan Mikita. My favorite was their defense-man(and I can’t recall his name.) Watched them many a year not winning the cup.
