The Bush Legacy 2.0: The Dissolving of Iraq Into Warring Factions

i’m very glad obama is president; he won’t get us into a war so far from our own country it’s night there when it’s day here. the main reason the right has for getting back into this is so the many dead “will not be in vain”–about the dumbest reason to fight i can think of.

Baghdad, Blowback and Bush

the parallels between this an the breakup of yugoslavia are interesting. in yugoslavia, also, a ruthless strongman kept disparate elements together like the keystone in an arch. take him out, whoopee! stones fly.
i’m curious if anybody knows any good sources on the origins of the sunni-shi’a split. i’m wondering if it matters that one side actually represents mohammed’s interests (his son in law ali) while the other represents, ultimately (in muyawiya) mohammed’s enemy sufyan. maybe sufyan had a resurgence. ironically, his side are the sunni, the orthodox.

Was Pvt. Bergdahl Choosing Suicide?

the article in rolling stone, which i highly recommend, reveals a young man profoundly troubled and not really equipped to deal with the overwhelming reality, especially the clash between his american ideals and the afghani truth.
the right should be ashamed. but no. and now they’ve discovered the president chews gum. impeach him!

plus, there may be intelligent republicans after all. some republicans are even now challenging the hysteria over bergdahl, which has to be the absolute nadir of rightie weirdness.

One Veteran’s Opinion About the POW Swap

there is a fascinating account in rolling stone’s archives written by michael hastings (the reporter who brought down mcchrystal), which really fleshes out this whole story. written in 2012, long before any of this gets political.

the politicizing of this is enough to turn my stomach. this kid was confused and angry, not an uncommon state of mind among americans thinking about afghanistan; turning that into an attempt to impeach the president is just bonkers. the rabid right has suffered a short circuit. their intake ports now connect directly to their rage to destroy obama. they don’t bother any more going through the interim stages, such as: finding out what actually happened, listening to all sides, thinking. just: something happened! impeach!

this happens so often–gop yell about something obama has done, mere moments after suggesting it themselves–it should have a name. the two-step is too bland. the lurch? the right to flip? something gambit?

the brouhaha over this is typical rightwing bs. first they see something obama has done. then they’re against it. then they start sorting through reasons why they should be against it. first it’s congress wasn’t told. (they were, apparently, anyway, what a crummy excuse). then it’s we’re releasing horrible ogres. (they’re taliban, the poster children for ineptitude even before 9/11, and these guys are unlikely to be much improved by years in prison). now it’s bergdahl was a deserter. (so what? he’s one of us. if he did wrong, we’re the ones to punish him). next it will be because the signs of the zodiac were wrong. all false, anyway: the real reason is they cannot allow any sign of obama’s ability to leak through to the public.
