deygirl – I thought of it more as the “I like/agree with what you wrote and how you wrote it but I don’t feel the need to add my own two cents” button. Planet has the thumbs up/down buttons for that, which I appreciate(I don’t ever see myself using the down button though).

Ooooh, yeah… sweet, sweet validation… that’s the stuff.

LMAO!

Ha, deygirl! Is it wrong of me to miss the fanning thing just a little? My goal was to reach 1000, I almost made it too. 😀

Worth sharing….”The Disease called ‘Perfection’ “

I don’t disagree with your larger point about how television in particular has been glorifying bad behaviour BUT I’m not sure I miss the days of Ozzie and Harriet either…

After all, wasn’t that just a promotion of another generation’s idea of womanly perfection? Perfectly subordinate and content wife and mother, always available with the pipe and slippers for her man, never a thought for elevating her own station in life? No thanks.

Maybe a modernized version is in order. Something along the lines of “Modern Family”… only funny.

Wow, Abby… you are an inspiration. I wish I could have been part of that crew at HP to help you out, but I am SO glad you found just what you needed WHEN you needed it.

WE ALL had to take stock, revise our priorities and get to work on our own issues and deciding what really was important, part of that was accepting we would never be perfect.

This is a journey I had to take as well and, like you, I still struggle with it sometimes. It’s cliche’, but you really do have to learn how to love yourself first (warts and all).

@ADONAI

I actually think a majority of men feel the same way that you do… preferring a little cushion for the pushin’ (as they say here in Redneckville, PA).

The pressure doesn’t come from men as individuals so much as it does from the media and from ourselves. Not to speak for all women but, for the ones that I know (myself included), we tend to want much more from ourselves than what is reasonable to expect. When I compare that to most guys I know, who are much more laid back and forgiving of themselves if they discover any attribute that might be considered a personal fault, it makes me wonder if it isn’t a least a teensy bit in a woman’s nature to be more self-critical.

Makes me feel bad for the women who have that kind of pressure on them when they really don’t need it.

You’re sweet. But don’t sweat it… we’re tougher than we look. And here’s looking forward to a future where women tell the media to shove their image of perfection, we like ourselves just the way we are, thank you very much. 🙂

Society does put more pressure on women than it does on men to be physically attractive. Is it just that or is it a difference in how we are wired that makes a women see herself through a different lens than a man will see himself? Nature, nurture or a combination of both I wonder?

This topic reminds me of a funny email I received many years ago… Let’s see if I can get the picture to post:

Stupid is as Stupid Polls

Yep.

And like Forrest Gump’s momma always said,

“Stupid is as stupid does.”

There’s some wisdom in that, I think.

@KQuark – Indeed… wasn’t it Palin not too long ago who was advocating laws being formed around Christian theology? Pls excuse me while I google…

Ah yes, here is the quote from May 2010, Sarah Palin on “The O’Reilly Factor”:

“I think we should keep this clean, keep it simple, go back to what our founders and our founding documents meant,” she said. “They’re quite clear that we would create law based on the God of the Bible and the 10 commandments, it’s pretty simple.”

Yikes.

BDM, I think that would be a wonderful topic and I await your post with much anticipation! 🙂

They will say it’s about not wanting government interference in their lives (because, the FLOTUS will be visiting every new mom and berate her if she is not breastfeeding her baby, dontcha know?) but really it’s about hating everything that’s promoted by an Obama.

Next up: Michele Bachmann rails against chocolate milk and teddy bears.

In all seriousness, the FLOTUS is absolutely right in promoting breastfeeding. When it is possible for a mother to do so, it really is the healthiest thing she can do for her baby. There are physical and phsychological benefits for both the mother and the child.

Hi, Buddy! I read that article too, it’s really amazing to me how different things are across the pond. They took basically the same economic situation and learned a completely different (and to my mind, correct) lesson from it than the USA’s TPers did.

But, then again, their TP movement wasn’t immediately co-opted by a couple of uberwealthy and influential brothers whose names rhyme with “soak”. Just sayin’.

» Posted By liberallioness76 On February 16, 2011 @ 7:53 am

Frankly, that’s just plain embarrassing.

Maybe the TPers are on to something… let’s cut spending on the DOE so no American is even aware of how stupid this country has become and save ourselves a whole lot of humiliation over it.

Ignorance is bliss, after all.

Bill Maher’s Big Lie Contribution?

@david p – I’m with you on this one… I may agree with him on many issues but I have never been much of a fan of his show.

He’s all snark and no substance imho.

The American people have Spoken … Maybe

Great post! The R’s would like the country to believe the lesson to take away from the elections is that the voters stand with their policies, but that simply isn’t true. Ignoring all the people who sat it out and ignoring the fact the the new TP members of Congress have little clout… that dog still won’t hunt.

It’s my personal belief that the main motivating force this past election (for those who did get off their bums and vote) was the economy. Yes, it IS recovering… but most of us know at least one person who is out of work and cannot find adequate employment. And, let’s face it, most people are seriously ill-informed on the causes and solutions to our dismal economic clime.

Fair or not, I believe the election can be summed up as: Economy bad + Dems in charge = Vote against Dems.

I think the establishment Rs know this very well and are trying to sell us all on the idea that the election was a vote FOR them when it was really a vote AGAINST the poor economy. If the econ is better in 2012 (and I think it will be) they have set themselves up nicely for another defeat.

@Chase – The familiar faces are a comfort to me while I adjust to a new environment. And I love that they were some of the smartest people over at HP… makes me feel a little like a geek at the cool kids table, but in a good way.

@Orcas – That’s true, or else there needs to be a zero tolerance policy on trolling like they have here on Planet.

Although, and it shames me a little to admit it… I sorta liked shutting down the trolls. It was one of my fav hobbies on a rainy day. 😀

Over moderation is why I decided to leave. What is the point of trying to formulate and type up a well thought out response to a story or another poster’s comment when it will first be subject to pre-moderation and then (assuming it passes whatever the criteria is for getting through) having it appear 6 pages down, only to be scrubbed a few minutes later?

It got sooo much worse after the elections that by the time the whole AOL thing hit, I had already (mostly) broke it off. I didn’t know about this place until just recently. I’m still feeling my way around.

Way to stay strong and true to your values, Abby! Not me… I guess it’s a little bit like watching a car wreck but I’ve popped over for a peek a couple of times… was so disgusted by what I saw I didn’t stay long.

It’s a damn shame what’s happened over there. 🙁

Friday Music Thread–Moving to The Planet Soon, Gonna Buy…

Wish we had more music like this today. It’s all good booty-shaking music with no soul.

Oh great, now I sound like an old person. Ha! “Why, in MY day…”

I don’t think we will have to wait. They have been pushing that meme over at Fox since the demonstrations began.

» Posted By liberallioness76 On February 11, 2011 @ 9:17 am

I think they only want it if they get to say who is going to be in charge.

That’s the tricky thing about Democracy, I guess. It isn’t really one unless the people who are to be governed get to be the ones who choose their government.

» Posted By liberallioness76 On February 11, 2011 @ 9:15 am

It always seems to be “opposite day” in troll world, doesn’t it? Such a simplistic way of viewing reality but it suits their mental capacity.

Facing Ignorance

So there’s my dilema, how can I keep my blood from spurting out my ears?

I understand this feeling oh-so-very well as I am living in my own personal “red” hell. I live in a small part of N Eastern PA… what’s often called “the Alabama” part of Pennsylvania. If I may be so bold, I would like to offer advice:

First, base the level of “elite liberal snobbishness” in your answer to the value of the realationship of the person you are confronting. If they are a person who means a lot to you and there isn’t any way to discuss the issue without animosity, maybe it’s best to just agree to disagree. Seriously, I’ve found the private eyeroll to be a lifesaver. Yeah, I know it’s a little juvenille… but so are my mother’s views on politics. So there.

Sometimes that’s just not possible. The person is in your face about it, or your level of annoyance has reached its peak. In those instances, I’ve found that a polite response of completely non-political truth does quite nicely. For instance, on the complete non-issue of the President’s faith, I will often very innocently say something like “Oh my, I hope he doesn’t get into trouble with his Muslim peers over his Christian wedding, his non adherence to salah, and his eating of pork.”

The looks on their faces as they try to “reason” those points away are priceless.

The Failed History of Conservatism in America

That is quite an impressive list. Depressing, but impressive.

It never fails to amaze me how conservatism can be on the wrong side of history time after time after time and STILL be anything more than an anecdote in a poli sci course.

The mind boggles.

The Failure That is Fox News
