Yes, it really was that important!

It was a great game thanks for the article. I can’t say I have seen any better in a long time. I think it could have gone either way.

You know javaz is a closet Canadian.

GROW – The Specific Agenda and Tactics

I have still been in contact with Jonathan Schneider the person who produced the documentary. “Mr. Schneider Goes to Washington” email address info@letsgoape.com

In my last correspondence I sent him a link to the online petition to amend the constitution to stop corporate influence on our elections
http://www.movetoamend.org/we-corporations

Here is his reply to me.

Thanks for the link. I will check it out. As I mentioned, I want to reinvigorate my work on campaign finance reform and related issues. To that end, I’d like to know a little bit more about your group. If you are the person to talk with, I’d love to chat. Is there a number I can contact you or who ever you think would be most appropriate in your group? Thanks!

Best,

Jonathan

Final Vote – Select a Name for Activist Group

I wrote this email to the group called APE and got this reply today.

“I’m working with a group that was spurred on by the recent Supreme Court Decision giving corporations even more of a say in our elections and was looking for kindred souls.”

Reply from:info@letsgoape.com

Well you found a kindred soul. Let’s go APE is still active but a bit dormant. Like you, the recent court decision has added fuel to my fire. Tell me about your group.

Best,

Jonathan

A republican friend of mine Dick sent me one of those strange email forwards. It said it was from Lee Iacocca’s new book. In this email it slammed President Obama’s socialist agenda.

I had read Mr. Iacocca’s autobiography and this writing didn’t sound like him to me, so I did a search and found Iacocca’s website. Of course the email was all bull. So I sent a link to Dick and told him to check it out.

There was an entry in his blog which is a little old but still rings true and is relevant to this discussion.

Mr. Schneider Goes To Washington
If you think just showing up to vote in November is going to fix this country, you got another thing coming. Voting (which 50% of Americans usually don’t do) can’t be the end of our obligation as American citizens.

Recently I saw a fantastic documentary film. The director, Jonathan Neil Schneider left a successful career and spent his savings to expose how our elections are financed and how it can corrupt Washington. “Mr. Schneider Goes to Washington” couldn’t be more timely. It is also funny and entertaining. Throughout the film I kept asking myself, “Where is our democracy heading?” “Aren’t there any rules anymore?”.

Everyone needs to see this film! And to all my friends in the media, if you want to know what Lee Iacocca thinks is wrong with politics, watch “Mr. Schneider Goes to Washington.”

And, please take a look at the “revised” 9C’s Scorecard! Print it out and pass it around.

New Populist Group – Vote For Your Favorite Names!

It would make sense to me with all the other groups out there with similar missions that the when this group has coalesced, it take the initiative and send them emails telling them of the existence of this group. Set up an email listing telling them of events that are planned such as the U-Tube video that has been planned. The very least this will be is a start at uniting all the other groups.

Of course this cannot be done until a separate website is set up. I’m sure that someone here at PPOV has thought of this already and is prepared to do that when the time comes.

Peace Out

Shortening campaign time to 6-8 weeks would help with corporate funding candidates.

Stop corporations from making ads to sway votes like the insurance companies did for defeating health care reform.

Stop lobbyists from bribing our reps.

Americans United

Great conversation. it took awhile to read all of the comments. Once a mission statement is decided upon.

It might be useful to list out where you stand on the issues in a questioner format. This questioner could be sent to all of the people seeking a seat in either house of congress, this year. The primaries will be upon us before you know it.

If you get a favorable reply. Then that candidate would get an endorsement from the group.

Vote Against the Conrad-Gregg Amendment!

Well I didn’t vote for a commission to make the decisions on these items and I don’t think other Americans did either. It needs to be done by all members of Congress with open debate so all can see what is being done.

The World According to GOP

Any Republican running for office needs to convince the American people that the Democrats own
1. The deficit
2. Taxes
4. The bank bail out
5. The housing problem
6. Unemployment
7. The war

They need to convince the Americans that they own
1. The war on Terror
2. Morality
3. Fiscal conservatism

What you have written is to me them trying to convince everyone of these items and then some. Nice article.

How does unemployment affect elections?

While researching this I started to look at GDP and deficit spending and found this article. I suppose it would make a separate post. Check this out if you like figures.

Carter had some problems not of his own making. He created a great many jobs and would have created more if the economy did not slide into a recession due to the oil embargo.
On the chart his four years are represented by a V showing the drop then a recovery and job growth.

Jobs were decreasing at a good pace when Reagan took over.

» Posted By dgraz On January 10, 2010 @ 1:26 pm

There were some disturbing trends shown by the graph and some revealing items.

You, Nellie and Tiger99 all commented on the growth of Jobs under Democratic Presidents. This raises a couple of questions. Is the President the most important branch of government for job growth? Is it driven by the cabinet that is chosen?

What I found as disturbing was that both houses of congress were under Democratic control for a very long time. Don’t you think we should have had things such as health care a long time ago? Of course the Senate was not a 60 majority for that time and blocked many initiatives.

» Posted By dgraz On January 10, 2010 @ 1:17 pm

Your comment and other peoples got me thinking how a political strategist might use this as a tool. If you overlay other events in history over the time line, it would give you clues as to what might have drove people to vote one way or the other.

An example would be during President Carter’s term, overlay the oil embargo. It really is what caused the economy to tank. As a person who had to sit in long gas lines you might think it was time for a change and vote for someone else.

I would be curious to what were the events leading up to the Republican revolution where they took both house of congress and held the Presidency for 2 terms. My wife said that one of the events was the savings and loan failures. This was banking crisis we did not learn from. Guess I will have to research that.

You are absolutely right.
They are always on the side of business.

That’s an interesting observation, but remember the federal reserve is supposed to be apolitical.

Thank you.
My first attempt at blogging and can see how it can be addictive.

» Posted By dgraz On January 8, 2010 @ 12:14 pm

In my opinion, what drives the economy more than anything is the federal reserve’s interest rate policy, which is supposed to be non-political.
There have been too many times in the past where the federal reserve raised interest rates too fast, throwing the economy into a recession.
Conversely, they’ve kept interest rates too low a number of times, causing inflationary bubbles, ie. the housing bubble.
It’s a tricky tightrope they have to balance.
To me, neither political party has as much pull as the federal reserve.

Thanks for the compliment. I think a great deal of reporters just speculate on things instead of doing the work to check their facts. Yes javaz is my lovely wife!

The Golden Bubble

I agree with you about gold being a bubble.
If you want to read the best book on investing, read “The Intelligent Investor” by Benjamin Graham.
The book was recommended by Warren Buffet and it defines investing compared to speculation.
