Nice to meet you too Nirek. Always happy to meet another POVer.

I want to give a huge thanks to AdLib for creating a safe place to think out loud. Planet POV fosters creative thought and honest conversation. I’ve asked this community to discuss tough, emotionally charged topics in the past and the discussion has always maintained the highest level of respect for differing views while fostering intelligent debate. It’s refreshing to find an online community that cares about every opinion, not just the ones we share.

Although I haven’t posted or even commented in a while, I am glued to the live blogging during the important moments like election nights and Presidential addresses to the nation. I’ll admit at times it feels like Mystery Science Theater 3000 when members of the opposing side occupy the podium, but that’s part of the fun. It reinforces the idea that blogging doesn’t have to be a singular activity and although we are all over the world, we can still share a common experience.

Congrats to choicelady for holding a spot in history. Here’s to the next 200,000 comments! Hopefully some of them will be mine.

House Republicans Ready to Pass “Must Carry” Gun Law for All Americans

Only on April Fool’s Day can I construct a nightmare game of “one of these things is not like the other”. Normally all of the scenarios I mentioned would be too far fetched to pass muster, even on April Fool’s Day. However, in the current political environment all bets are off.

Ad Lib, this was the best AFD story I’ve heard since the NPR broadcast about people getting surgery on their eyes so they can see 3D movies without needing special glasses. Even though everyone seemed to get that you were pulling one on us, I was impressed at the effort. Nicely done!

Who didn’t see this coming? What’s next? Forcing all Americans to learn Spanish? Reversing the pay structure for all corporations so the receptionist has an off shore bank account and the CEO qualifies for food stamps? Losing our right to choose making abortion impossible to obtain legally? Oh, wait, that is happening. Sorry, I strayed too far…

REVIEW: Predictable and Repetitive, Has American Politics Jumped the Shark?

Considering they have the lowest approval numbers in history we could cancel them due to low ratings.

I don’t think even TNT would rescue this stale reality show.

2012 New Hampshire Primary Thread

And all of Gingrich’s voters will be women with beautiful beards.

» Posted By TakeInAPlay On January 10, 2012 @ 4:47 pm

I would agree with that order. I think Paul will do better than expected in the “Live Free or Die” state. I enjoy these primaries so much more when I don’t have a horse in the race. Well, I do but my horse is the only one in the race and he’s running on a different track.

Presidential Primary Challenges Miss the Point

You got it Emerald! And while you’re at it you can add one for your local city council and community college board.

As a country, we don’t act, we react. Look at what’s going on with the stock market and you’ll know what I mean. When voters don’t get what they want, they sit home or vote for the other guy. Well, right now they are getting screwed by the other guy and our best hope is to make them see that.

Nice to be seen. Now that NN is done I’m hoping to visit more often.

The idea of focusing any energy on replacing Obama is the dumbest use of our strength. National politics begins in our front yard and that’s where we need to start working. I was at the CDP eboard meeting when the Progressive Caucus voted to explore a primary challenger to Obama and even the chair of the caucus thought that was insane.

When the repubs took the house and everyone was doing a chicken little, I knew that it was not a true majority because the TPers were not repubs but libertarians at heart. They ran as repubs because it was easier to get elected by highjacking an existing party in turmoil than to run as a third party candidate. If Boehner was truely looking out for the welfare of the country, in the debt ceiling debate he would have unified the moderate repubs and the dems into an agreement and that would have been enough to work around the others. It would have been political suicide for him but his job is not that secure anyway. And who knows, there are enough voters who were concerned with the direction the debate was going, and unhappy with the outcome, that maybe he would have survived. What is the stronger position to hold? Confidence with the party leadership or confidence with the people who voted you in? It would have been interesting to watch. And since Boehner is probably about to be replaced in his leadership position anyway, it comes down to which one would have helped him sleep at night.

I absolutely agree. Obama can’t do everything alone and he needs the backup of Congress to pry the repubs feet from the sand. The focus here needs to be getting the Tea Partiers in line and stop the obstructionist governing they have brought to Washington. Mitch McConnell said his main goal was to prevent Obama from being re-elected. Instead of having Obama’s back, we have been snipping at his heals. Yes, I’m pissed off at his weak-kneed negotiating but we need to remember that he took the wheel of the Titanic after it hit the iceberg. When Harry Reid looks progressive, it’s time for us to roll up our sleeves, again, and work locally to get the Congress we need to avoid the many other icebergs in our path.

Never Mind The Dangerous Insipidity of Dan Choi

I’ve known Dan to be a publicity hound more than a committed activist. Which in my mind belittles his point and lessens his effectiveness. Even the stunt he pulled at NN 10 with Harry Reid and the West Point ring was staged to a degree. He made sure Harry knew what was planned so he could react appropriately.

A Well-Informed Electorate Elects a Responsible Government? Ask Eric Cantor.

There has been no accountability within the media since they became mouth pieces for their corporate owners. Just like corporate ownership has effectively censored what music is played on what used to be independant radio stations, they have also succeeded in turning the 4th estate from a watchdog to a lapdog. Of course they won’t call Cantor on his stupidity. It may result in the journalist being demoted to the newspaper division. Or worse, the blog!

Arianna’s Marie Antoinette Moment

I think what constitutes as bitchy is not the comment as much as the intent. A comment that is shared in the interest of helping someone become a better human being is not bitchy, depending on the intent. So when I say “Arianna is a self-serving, backstabbing, over indulgent media whore”, that’s not bitchy becuase my intent is to benefit mankind and get her to shut the hell up. Simple really.

» Posted By TakeInAPlay On March 7, 2011 @ 2:47 pm

And the best part of the picture is Arianna would hate it. She’s the biggest diva I’ve ever worked with, and I work with people in the entertainment industry so that’s saying alot. She’d hate how that picture makes her look since she’s all about looking good.

» Posted By TakeInAPlay On March 7, 2011 @ 1:30 pm

Finally someone is willing to call Arianna out for the hypocrite she is. Bravo Marion! There are so many things I could say about this situation but you’ve already said them. So consider this a hearty pat on the back thank you and a toast to you.

When is all in good fun too far, even with Sarah Palin?

I would also have issue if the target was Obama or Nancy Pelosi. But the difference is, they have already been threatened on multiple occasions. I haven’t heard of any violent threat against Sarah Palin although she has been linked, justly or not, to violent acts against others. As far as threatening th oboist in the orchestra, I think that’s a given. I mean seriously, have you heard him play? Not a stretch.

No Vote, No Voice

I have to say that I love your Dad. I’ve never met him but he sounds like my kind of guy.

The lure of KO left my system long ago. His arrogance is so visible that I could never plant my feet firmly in his camp but prefer to drift over the line for an occasional, “You tell ’em Keith”. But even those moments have become farther apart.

I’ve also been afraid that Jeb will most certainly throw his oversized hat in the ring and that scares me more than W because Jeb is the smart one. Being a long time fan of Russ Feingold, even I have to admit that I don’t think he has the moral flexibility to triumph over the Repub bulldozer. I believe in holding our electeds accountable but I also believe in helping them hold office.

Not Seeing the Forest for the Trees

I agree on many points and being an activist in Los Angeles, I’m proud to say that my hours of work in the last campaign did result in one of the few victories on Nov. 2. And I have also said that Obama is not pushing a progressive or liberal or even Democratic agenda as much as he’s looking out for the country as a whole regardless of political affiliation. That’s what we elected him to do. But what I’m upset about is not that he’s folding, it’s that he’s folding when he has all the cards and he’s not getting anything in return. That’s what chaps my ass, so to speak. Truth is, it’s been so long since we’ve had a truly non-partisan President that we’ve forgotten what it looks like. It’s been so long since we’ve looked at this country as a whole and not as red or blue that we forget that the people who’ve been hurt the most don’t care what color their state is, they care that their fridge is empty and jobs are non-existent. Our country could do well by a little more ‘there by the grace of God go I’ when looking at those fly over states. We’ve become too invested in not letting the other side win to be fully committed to protecting those who have already lost.

LIVE COVERAGE: Obama Speaks @ USC – 1PM

Thanks for the link Adlib. I watched it on my desktop during lunch. The main partner in my firm heard it and I thought I was in trouble. Until he asked me for the link and started watching it on his desktop. Then we had it in stereo.

Interview With Kim Kardashian’s Butt

Great post. I just can’t imagine why someone would want to be known for being an ass? That seems to be her only contribution to society. If you can call that a contribution. 😉

Let’s Talk Religion

I actually give really good parenting advice. Not becuase of my non-existant parenting experience, but because of my overwhelming experience as a rotten kid. Particularly as a teenager. I really tested the boundries. My Dad, a retired high school teacher, says the 2 best times in a child’s life is when they’re 5 and when they’re 15. When they’re 5 they have all the questions and when they’re 15 they have all the answers. I had all the answers at 13 but then I was an overachiever. 😉

» Posted By TakeInAPlay On October 14, 2010 @ 3:38 pm

I couldn’t have said it better myself Haruko. However, I must warn you that I will use that phrase and claim it as my own. Hope you don’t mind. 😉

» Posted By TakeInAPlay On October 14, 2010 @ 10:44 am

Interesting that you’d use child raising as a metaphor because I don’t have kids but I’ve been witness to the process from so many different angles that parents actually come to me for advice. And your point is spot on. Yes, I can give advice about parenting but from a strictly analytical perspective. Because I’ve never been a parent I would lack the emotional component that only parents have. I think that’s what you’re saying about religion too. I recently met a man who said his religion taught him how to be a good person and yet I learned that same lesson ‘on the streets’, so to speak. But when he hits hard times and needs guidance, he turns to the Bible. I don’t have that foundation to turn to but I still seem to find my way through. Thank you for bringing a perspective that I’d never considered before.

Great answers Sue. I applaud your ability to question the unquestioned and find your own way out of a no win situation.

Your comments remind me of 2 things. First, that if there is a God, I think he created the universe and the people on it and said, “It’s all yours folks. You’re on your own. I’m outta here”. He built this place, gave us free will and sat back to see what we’d do with it.

The second thought that crossed my mind is the old joke about how I was raised Catholic but never grasped the concept of Lent. The idea of giving up something to symbolize the depth of your faith seemed counter productive to me. So one year I gave up the Catholic religion. Caught em on a loophole. (badump bump) Thank you, I’ll be here all week.

» Posted By TakeInAPlay On October 13, 2010 @ 3:22 pm

Amen sister! The intent of faith is to teach human kind how to relate to each other. So if those with faith treat me with kindness, my interacting with them should teach it to me. There are people who spend their lives in church and still don’t get what I’ve learned just by living and interacting with my fellow humans. Given the tight hold that religion has on some very dangerous people, I’m happy to know that an organization like yours are flourishing. Keep doing the people’s work!
