Arab Uprisings: Still Writing History

Thanks Kinrad & Kalima for your both your replies and informative links. –Redemption

This is very nice, Kirad. (I didn’t know the histories or present statuses of many of the countries you covered.)

I have a question (for you or anyone else): the media, as far as I can tell, has represented the west (i.e., the U.S. and western Europe) as pro-No.Af./Mid-East democracy. Is this, however, really the case? (I ask because 1. the issue of control over the flow of petroleum and 2. the demand for democracy is from the ground up (the people) as opposed to top down (institutional initiated change) (again, as far as I can tell).)

I Never Saw The Temple…..

Very, very good mommy and daddy for saying, “No.” (When the scout master said that I needn’t go to camp with my first grader, my reply was, “Of course I do.” And that was the end of that.)

What Is Love?

I agree–this was a nicely thought provoking posts, and I’ve enjoyed the comments tremendously.

I’m a bit late, but “Sweet dreams, Chase.”

…you may not want to change them, but if you love them you don’t want them to not grow and are, therefore, accepting of change and, indeed, embrace it (as long as it’s healthy).

Actually, the elderly are sexually active…STDs are a problem in eldercare facilities (at least in the States).

…lovely. Nicely stated and clearly from the heart.

Greetings Killgore,

I avoided committment like the plague when younger…I wanted to go to college unencumbered and I hadn’t been very impressed with the (albeit long lasting) marriages on both sides of my birth family: it simply seemed to me that women inevitably gave much more than men, which irritated me to no end. It didn’t seem fair. I did, however, fall in love in college, and married while a graduate student after a five year courtship. It was pure heaven when it was good, and pure hell when it wasn’t. Raised a not-very-good Catholic, filing for divorce was one of the most painful things I’ve ever done. (I still love the man I married; I still have no idea who the person was I divorced.)

As for the future of romance? After I’ve gotten settled at a college or university & it looks as if I’m there to stay, I’d be willing to give romantic love another round. What can I say? I’m up for a good cuddle and someone to chat with while squeezing fruit at the market. 🙂

Warm regards,
–Redemption

Ha! My marriage track record isn’t any better, but I understand what you mean.

My first marriage was to a man I felt was my best friend…and we were extremely good at planning (as part of our individual personalities). We used to call ourselves “the velociraptors” because, as a team of two, we could zero in on what we wanted and go for it with clarity and soft-spoken ferocity. It wasn’t planning per se that did us in, but unexpected growth of one and resistance to growth by the other, and the inability as a couple to negotiate the difference, that did us in. (I think we could have resolved our differences with a decent marriage counselor; he was suspicious of anything having to do with either social workers or psychologists. Impass.) I could be wrong, but I think the general breakdown was due to a lack of mutual respect which, with friendship or love, is the most solid foundation IMHO.

I guess we don’t necessarily disagree…and I think a more “Let’s see what happens” approach is very much informed by personality and, if I may say so without offense, age. When you’re younger and starting a career as well as contemplating starting a family, planning is more or less fundamental. When you’re older and settled, there is much less pressure to get “from here to there”.

deygirl,

I love the idea of “living in the moment”. It has been my experience with romantic love, however, that things go afoul when I’ve ignore long term implications or a disconnect in values (and they matter when you’re coordinating your life with another’s). It’s not so much an issue of forseeing (or forcing) the future as much as an issue of being clear about who is standing before you, understanding their strengths and weaknesses as well as yours, and being clear about what you can accept and what you can’t. (Having said that, there is that pesky little reality of “getting to know you, getting to know all about you” which, in some cases, can take years. People are full of (sometimes unfortunate) surprises.)

Anyway, just a thought.

Peace,
–Redemption

Wolfie, I love this question & have to think about it more. I do know that for me romantic love doesn’t matter without mutual respect…that is, for me mutual respect is essential for romantic love to flourish. As for (almost) limitless love and hope and forgiveness, nothing has come close in my experience than my love for my child. As for the most secure, longlasting love, it hasn’t been romantic love, but rather sororal (or fraternal) love–the sort of thing between Oprah and Gail (sp?) although admittedly not that tight.

In any event, I’m very much looking forward to what discussion this topic elicits.

In the meanwhile, although I’m not usually into “bubble gum” pop, I must admit I do like “Bubbly” :):

The Daily Planet, Vol.1 Sunday Edition

Thanks for posting this, Cher. I read Lakoff’s article with great interest.

It is especially important, to my mind, that he’s made explicit the conservative attact against women as a class: indeed, from demanding that rape victims not be called “victims properly-so-called” until a (largely male) judiciary finds in their favor, to twisting the words of Rep. Speier (who didn’t “admit” to having an abortion, but instead offered the painful decision she and her husband had to make faced with a wanted, but health and possibly life threatening, pregnancy as an example why sweeping anti-abortion legislation is draconian) the conservatives are on the move to put women in their place. For conservatives, patriarchy rules and, to that extent, they are in no way morally superior to “them over there”; indeed, they are arguably of a piece with the Taliban and other masculinist hegemony writ large.

Bah!!

Wisconsin, what does it really mean?

FYI: The Tea Party (Koch?) are now organizing against unions in Michigan (I’m sorry I can’t comment more…I have to work, but I thought this would be of interest):

As you may have heard in the last week Wisconsin Unions have bussed thousands to the capitol, shutting down small companies and schools for days while they rally to keep expensive union plans that are killing that state.

NOW IT IS HERE IN MICHIGAN!

Organizing for America (Obama’s Organizing wing) and Unions are calling for a march on Lansing tomorrow.

WE MUST HAVE A LARGER COUNTER RALLY! Please read just two of the many messages I have received in the past 2 days:

Southwest Michigan Patriots
Tea Party Rally
Lansing, Tuesday Feb. 22nd
From 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
State Capitol, West Side along Walnut St.
(DRESS WARM & JOIN US!)

Dear Sean,
Most of probably are aware of what is happening in Madison, Wisconsin. Governor Scott Walker is standing firm with the legislature to address the budget crisis.

Governor Walker is facing a $3.6 billion budget deficit, and he wants state workers to pay one-half of their pension costs and 12.6 percent of their health benefits. Currently, most state employees pay nothing for their pensions and virtually nothing for their health insurance.

Exempting police, fire, and state troopers, Governor Walker would end collective bargaining over pensions and benefits for the rest. Collective bargaining for wages would still be permitted, but there would be no wage hikes above the Consumer Price Index. Unions could still represent workers, but they could not force employees to pay dues. In exchange for this, Walker promises no furloughs for layoffs.

Government employee unions have been staging strikes, teachers have been calling in sick, schools are closed, and school children are being driven to the capitol by their teachers. Over 70,000 showed up on Saturday to rally for both sides. The rallies are spreading across America.

Below, is a notice from the Southwest Michigan Tea Party Patriots inviting you to come to Lansing to rally in support of the taxpayers who want fiscal accountability. I am passing it along as it was written by Gene Clem, President of the SWMIPATS. Hope you can come.

We will gather along Walnut on the West side of the Capitol. There seems to be plenty of parking within 2 to 3 blocks to the West of that area.

Please check out this web site: Worker Solidarity (reminiscent of USSR isnt it?)

As you can see they are calling for rallies across the nation this week. Folks, this is the start of the 2012 campaign. In contrast to Tea Party rallies in support of the rule of law and the constitution and election of folks who would vote as we desired, these rallies are against the duly elected representatives of the folks who turned the nation red in November. I’ll let you make up your own minds as to who may be behind that site…. “workers of the world?”….

We cannot let our elected government officials be intimidated by these ill informed people who will show up for these rallies. We must let them see that ‘the folks’ are here to support them in the difficult decisions we sent them to Lansing, or Madison, or Springfield, or where ever to make.

As always, bring signs that are to the point; humor is usually the best way to make a point. No personalities, no politics, we are about citizen control of our government. Elections mean things. “No more $140,000 per year bus drivers” or “I can’t afford my health insurance AND yours” or “Tea for two means you pay too”. Come on, you can do better than that I am sure.

For those of you who live several hours from Lansing it means it will be an early morning road trip, but we need to show our support for spending cuts against those whose interest is in continued growth of government. Dress warm, Lansing is a cold, cold place.

February 22nd is George Washington’s birthday; What Would George Do? Make him proud of us.

Sincerely,
Gene Clem

Arianna’s Republican Hattrick (or Toyboy)

Whether you’re serious or not, I don’t think AH is particularly worried about us and, as far as I can tell, the post above was vetted before published; as for the issues of style and content, however, the post doesn’t seem to be good fit with the overall tone of the site (IMHO).

An Avatar by Any Other Name

Your avatar reminds me of my godfather…he’s (I take it) considerably older–in his mid 80’s now–but he’s a big, tall pecan brown man with wireframe glasses, a snow white beard, and a happily shiny bald head…and he wears the most fantastic hats: cowboy hats, tweed flat caps and fedoras. Even elderly he’s quite a striking figure (and I adore him–one of the most strong, clear-headed and kind-hearted people I ever met).

Interesting post…on the one hand, gender seems to be “voiced” even behind avatars; on the other hand, I’ve often, much to my surprised, been mistaken for a man. And so it goes.

Regarding the screen name, the lyrics of “Redemption Song” is one of my favorites…and “II” after I deleted my HuffPo account to avoid posting while helping my son with school. I chose the Lauryn Hill cover because one of my favorite albums is “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, because until I had my little guy I wore my hair in the most fantastic twists (I now have a “mom bun” ;0), because I’m a firm believer that the media has too few faces of color, and because I’m a black female and don’t want to be represented as anything other.

Not exactly exciting or informative, but there it is.

Cheers, dears.

…proof positive, Marion, that histories are important to know. (I admit that I don’t know AH’s, but the more I hear, the more I’m inclinded to chalk it up to “well played” on her part.)
