JESUS CHRIST!

Interesting article, Adonai. I’ve always found the whole process of cannonization fascinationg…and of course political. The knowlege of early Christian beliefs are also often obscured, if could ever be known to any extent, motivated by political and social agendas. I am particularly taken both with Jesus’ relationship with Mary Magdelene and her most likely de-elevation as an apostle, as well as an earlier Christian interpretation of one of Jesus’ many messages that there is divinity in all of us. Certainly Jesus’ explicitly populous and accepting worldview (as an adult) has been ignored by many modern day public Christians in the U.S. (and I say “public” intentionally)…and it’s a shame, really.

Friday Music Thread – Comedy Tonight

I’ve seen this before, as well. I wouldn’t have understood it quite so well had I never lived in Boston. (My birth family is Catholic, but when I was growing up our parish congregants were mostly Afro-Caribbean and from the deep south…we didn’t take priests or the church’s dictates seriously which, in my opinion, was way healthy–esp. for women. ;0)

A Letter From Sendai

Kes, you wrote what I was thinking as I read the letter…as a mother of a young child, my first priority would be to keep him safe and my second priority, for him, would be to keep myself safe.

That said, I was moved by a report I heard earlier today on NPR. Japenese culture has a sort of selfless cohesion that Americans, I fear, cannot begin to imagine, hense wts’s friend’s appeal to community effort as her adopted/shared identity of norms and values.

Very nice piece.

TAKE ACTION – How To Help Those In Japan

Greetigns KK.

I don’t go to HuffPo often, and during the few times that I do, I don’t usually read the comments; however, earlier today aspiecelia had this to say (which is welcomed):

“Your lead story is misleading. Part of the situation has been rated five, yet other parts are a three. The government of Japan admitted they were overwhelmed days ago and were asking for help, where were you then? Anyone who thinks it odd they are overwhelmed right now is clueless. A major earthquake, a devastationg Tsunami, a nuclear accident and then another major earthquake occur and you are trying to blame them for not being able to handle it, really! Remember our country couldn’t even handle Katrina. Your website is deteriorating into a seething pool of sensationalizing hype.”

Here’s hoping you hear from your family soon.

Best wishes to you and yours,
–Redemption

FYI, there is a charity watchdog that winnows fraudulent or overly compensated administrators/”middle men”–I don’t know whether this is the correct one, but one suggestion is to visit the American Institute of Philanthropy before giving:

The Battle of Thermopylae: How Democracy Was Saved

…I forgot about women in Sparta–you’re absolutely correct–and I didn’t realize that women could own land in ancient Greece. (I’m *terrible* at history…this piece is v. educational.)

Yes Virginia, There is Class Warfare

Greetings Truth,

I’m sorry…I didn’t see your previous message (as I sign only every so often), but I did just send you an e-mail. Do let me know what you have in mind.

Scratch that–I just noticed you linked “Collaboration Part 3”: are you asking me to collect links from HuffPo pseudo-science articles, or are you asking about polling/interviewing previous HuffPo commenters? If the first, I could gather an imperfect set of URLS to HuffPo articles, say a dozen or so, as examples; if the second, I have to admit to not being a social scientist of any stripe, and so I don’t know how to either correctly compose an interview or compile/interpret data, but I’d be more than happy to be interviewed by someone who does.

My quick email message should have reached you by now; if not, it’s edwardst23@comcast.net (which I check once or twice a week…alas it’s not my work email wich I check more often out of necessity). (I compartmentalize most aspects of my life. :0)

Warm regards,
–Redemption

Absolutely. And then there’s the ominous trend towards self-service and automation from filling stations to grocery checkout lanes to not being able to find help in your local department store. If no one is hired, who is supposed to have money to buy “services-which-aren’t”??

A Brief History of Poetry

anyone lived in a pretty how town
(by e. e. cummings)

anyone lived in a pretty how town
(with up so floating many bells down)
spring summer autumn winter
he sang his didn’t he danced his did.

Women and men (both little and small)
cared for anyone not at all
they sowed their isn’t they reaped their same
sun moon stars rain

children guessed (but only a few
and down they forgot as up they grew
autumn winter spring summer)
that noone loved him more by more

when by now and tree by leaf
she laughed his joy she cried his grief
bird by snow and stir by still
anyone’s any was all to her

someones married their everyones
laughed their cryings and did their dance
(sleep wake hope and then)they
said their nevers they slept their dream

stars rain sun moon
(and only the snow can begin to explain
how children are apt to forget to remember
with up so floating many bells down)

one day anyone died i guess
(and noone stooped to kiss his face)
busy folk buried them side by side
little by little and was by was

all by all and deep by deep
and more by more they dream their sleep
noone and anyone earth by april
with by spirit and if by yes.

Women and men (both dong and ding)
summer autumn winter spring
reaped their sowing and went their came
sun moon stars rain
