Weekend Music Thread – The Poetry of Music

Hi KT! van Gogh’s works, as they say, ‘speak to me’! His fusion of form and content is amazingly powerful, dramatic, rhythmic, imaginative, and emotional.
His was a breathtaking passion of the artist who was completely absorbed in the effort to explain either his struggle against madness or his comprehension of the spiritual essence of man and nature. In either case, his legacy is remarkable and remarkably moving.
I have seen several exhibits of his work in my life, and each time I am moved more than the last time…and I always lingered so long at each piece my family would invariably begin to give me the ‘eye’ to come along. 😉

Don McClean’s “Vincent(Starry Starry Night)”

Starry, starry night.
Paint your palette blue and grey,
Look out on a summer’s day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they’ll listen now.

Starry, starry night.
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
Swirling clouds in violet haze,
Reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blue.
Colors changing hue, morning field of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath the artist’s loving hand.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they’ll listen now.

For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.

Starry, starry night.
Portraits hung in empty halls,
Frameless head on nameless walls,
With eyes that watch the world and can’t forget.
Like the strangers that you’ve met,
The ragged men in the ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they’re not listening still.
Perhaps they never will…

(‘Lyrics, with a smattering of van Gogh’s transcendent and splendid works 🙂

Wisconsin and Learning from Our Mistakes

In toto, I agree with much of what you say. The wholly corporate-owned Republicans have mastered Big Lie politics as well as any Nazi or fascist group in the past has done, and their manipulation of large segments of the masses is unquestionable: Their leadership, both corporate and political, channel fear, hate, racism and greed superbly in order to achieve their ends….the enrichment of their corporate masters as well as themselves, and the maintaining of the status quo as long as possible.

That ‘demon seed’ is indeed alive and well on both sides of the political spectrum; we certainly haven’t erased our long racist history from the whole of the political discourse.
I too have heard the hurtful slurs come from many who see themselves as progressives, often born of frustration (not an excuse, but an explanation) when a progressive policy is watered down or lost.
On the other hand, the sheer volume of right wing hate and bigotry often arises from a virulent fear of loss: The loss of some vision of America they have constructed which has little grounded in reality; the fear of change in a myriad number of ways of the political social, and moral landscape they have been nurtured to embrace and which, as they see it, is slipping away.
In short, they are firmly on the wrong side of history; they cling to an America which never was; and their virulent struggle to maintain the status quo which has so benefited them makes it necessary to be ever vigilant in the struggle to make this a country where everyone has a chance to succeed in every way.

Indeed correct. The enormity of the racism of the Tea Party and its adherents is unquestionable. They try at times to hide it behind thin partitions of some nebulous ‘conservative’ ideology, but the racism is palpable: The caricatures and cartoon figures of the president are almost always tinged with racism or overtly racist, and the posters and signs that attack Hispanics, Muslims, as well as African Americans are despicable. And they are ALWAYS on display at the Tea Party rallies for example.

Help Keep The Planet In Orbit – Donate Today

Whatta’ delight this site is! So many familiar faces and so many new friends!
Here we get to speak ‘with’ others and not simply ‘at’ them, and aren’t trembling in fear of mods and filters a legion of trolls with ‘talking points’ drivel, hate-filled and bigoted snark, and simply a desire to get ‘replies’ no matter the content of the thread or the ideas being discussed.
The people who post here may agree with you, argue with you, praise you, become your friends but they do it with intellect and insight and never out of anger and blind hate or with rude snark.
In short, it’s just great conversation. Continued success, Planet!!!

The State of Education in America

Absolutely spot on! Good to see you ol’ friend.

» Posted By Glenmoredoc1 On February 9, 2011 @ 5:02 pm

One can only hope that the stranglehold that TX has had in the past over text books for the nation’s classrooms is diminishing.
The push to rewrite our nation’s history (You mentioned the attempts of the conservatives to diminish revolutionary titan Thomas Jefferson’s role in our nation’s founding and the never ending push to inflict ‘creationism’ or ‘intelligent design’ on the science classroom.) and foil national standards in our education system is the conservatives’ dream…a dream born primarily from hate, bigotry and fear.
Our children and grandchildren must compete in an ever shrinking world and a global economy. Those who work so hard to embrace the status quo or return us to some nebulous past do only harm to our and our children’s future.

In your very thoughtful and reasoned piece lies the reason the GOP, traditionally, has opposed public education and has long wanted to dismantle the Dept. of Education. Generationally, the poorest and most poorly educated states vote Republican.
The old tried-and-true politics of the “keep em’ poor and ignorant” philosophy of the GOP works for them….especially in the South and West.

From the New York Times: “7 of America’s 10 best-educated states are strongly “blue” in national politics, and the others (Colorado, New Hampshire and Virginia) have been trending blue. Of the 10 least-educated, only one (Nevada) is not reliably Republican.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/07/magazine/07Inequality-t.html?pagewanted=print

Sadly, the GOP has continued of late to devolve into a depraved cult which seems little interested in anything but regaining political power at all costs…the country’s people be damned! They worship some Norman Rockwell version of the United States that never really existed….and they win elections by convincing their ‘base’ that all the problems which are evident are the fault of ‘those people’…those ‘other’ people!
Tragically, their bumper sticker politics appeal to their base and ignorance works well politically for them.

The Failure That is Fox News

rotfl

I must admit to being an early fan as well! 😉

» Posted By Glenmoredoc1 On February 9, 2011 @ 5:01 pm

Well done Dusty. And right on target! Relying on the Fox News Channel as your a source of news is like using MAD Magazine as a legitimate source of news.
The Fox News Channel’s reporting is so biased and skewed, and such an obvious GOP propaganda tool, that trying to obtain any real information from a news report there is quite challenging or near impossible. It’s an industry joke because it provides info-tainment rather than reality-based news coverage and is a “news channel” in name only.
The network is, at best, what L.A. Times Editor John Carroll famously called “conservative political musings” and “pseudo-journalism.”

He responded to the “Women for Men” forum on Cragislist to a 34 year old woman, seeking “financially & emotionally secure” men who don’t “look like toads.” (rotflmao)
That same day, she got a response from a person who said his name was Christopher Lee, describing himself as 39-year-old lobbyist, “a very fit fun classy guy. Divorced. Live in Cap Hill area. 6ft 190lbs blond/blue.”
He posted the pic with the followup.

You just can’t make this stuff up!!

» Posted By Glenmoredoc1 On February 9, 2011 @ 4:31 pm

Have you seen the pic that did him in?
Somehow it’s quite laughable and pitiable.

Another GOP ‘family values’ con who does this while representing his married self as divorced or widowed.

I don’t doubt it at all PocketWatch. The ‘Architect’ Rove and the other GOP dirty tricksters are ingenious at stifling the vote across the country, and especially in districts where they are the weakest.

This is the reprehensible kind of behavior from the Party that just loves its flags, lapel pins, patriotism and sharing its’love’ of democracy with everyone; THEN the cons and baggers try to deny people who voice another view the vote if possible!
They know they can only win by energizing their odious ‘base’ and trying to keep the people who disagree with them from the polls.

Long time poster and acquaintance to us all ‘zootliberal’ was banned at HP yesterday, after years at HP, for simply posting a link to this site!
As far as I know, and though I can’t say the same about myself, he never posted anything that should have gotten him banned in all the time he spent there!

Welcome foxy!
Here the welcome is warm and the conversation fun, very lively and informative!

Hey! Where are all my ‘badges’?

Can I get a ‘favorite’ for that? Watch it…that finger is not a ‘fav’!!

Now, now….Hey, don’t throw that! Your trying to ‘delete’ me!
I’ll flag you for ‘abusive’ behavior toward an old poster!
Help!!!~~~~running~~~~ ~~~~running~~~~ ~~~~running~~~~ ~~~~running~~~~

Tough crowd here! 😉

» Posted By Glenmoredoc1 On February 9, 2011 @ 9:23 am

Absolutely spot on! I was amazed at the complacency of so many of the Democratic voters who opined that ‘it doesn’t make any difference’ and whose complacency turned over the House to TammyFayeBoehner and the screeching Tea Party Putzes.
Others just seemed to think it couldn’t happen and did, much to their credit, keep working very, very hard right up to election day Nov.

» Posted By Glenmoredoc1 On February 9, 2011 @ 9:12 am

That announcement undoubtedly ‘made’ Teapublican racist ‘Gomer’Allen’s day and enhances his chances for a comeback.

Good to see you old friend! 🙂
I too am anxious to see what transpires over ‘there’ ….and I hope these past few days aren’t a harbinger of things to come!

Great to see you ol’ friend!
It will indeed be interesting to see what the future brings to HP/AOL. If it furthers progressive ideas and ideals and doesn’t morph into just another cookie-cutter ad site, I shall not abandon it; if not, I will count my years spent there as a learning experience and move out and on.
