Time Out for O/T – Vol. 17

Watching OccupyOakland on live stream. Jean Quan is diverting money from the budget to fund 700 to 1000 police officers to get rid of protesters. Police from all over the Bay area have been staging at the Oakland Coliseum. There are reports police have been authorized to use the LRAD device (Long Range Acoustic Device).

$1 Million for police action, but there’s a budget crisis?

Please come watch. Bear witness to what is happening.

The “Garbage” Has a Voice

Actually, all staff at this shelter are required to wear a badge with their full first name and their photo, so that they can be readily identified as such.

Ms. B is the executive director of the MCS South, and her name, email address, and phone number are listed on the San Francisco Saint Vincent de Paul’s website as such.

Considering that Ms. B has ignored five emails and daily telephone calls, I seriously doubt that she is in anyway concerned about anyone knowing her name.

And this is the precise text of one of the emails I sent her. I apologize for not making that more clear.

bito, you misunderstand. The rules were not the issue. The issue was that nobody communicated what the rules were, nobody communicated the procedures, and most staff just ignored the people coming in or yelled at them.

This isn’t a question of “breaking the rules”. No rules were broken, at least not by me or my partner. And most of the staff I interacted with were not concerned with rules or how they were applied. They were more concerned with stroking their own egos, denigrating the people coming in for services, or just doing whatever they wanted.

As a matter of fact, several staff members told us dinner was served at 6 (the same time we had to stand in line waiting to know if we would get to sleep there that night). Much later we found out that dinner was served at 5:15 pm.

As far as volunteering, I will be volunteering for a different homeless program at the end of the month, for a special event going on. So will my partner.

And we have done quite a bit of service to other homeless for the past month and a half. We’ve shared food, shared coffee, shared information and resources, given clothing we did not need, and even allowed other homeless to use our phones to contact family or resource agencies.

None of that mattered at St. Vincent’s. As far as the last staff member I dealt with was concerned, I was the worst thing on the planet.

Thanks KT. Yes, it is far too easy to start seeing one’s self as “garbage” and as “invisible”. Most of the time, dealing with so-called human services agencies, I also start feeling mute. Far too many of the workers at these agencies have trained themselves to not hear what applicants are saying. And I get real tired of repeating myself.

We walked back to my van that morning, and slept there. Yeah, it was cold (SF in summer is not that warm), but I took a generic “sleep-aid” and slept until noon.
As far as improvements… we’re much better off sleeping in the van.

Was it as good for you as it was for me?

AL, having worked for several call centers, I can tell you than 2 out of 100 reps would have questioned that script… and promptly have been fired.

I worked in one place, where I paraphrased the script so that it sounded more personable. On a QA, I received high marks for the quality of my call, but failed for not following the script.

When the QA boss got in the following day and looked over it, she went to the QA monitor and threatened to fire her if she ever did something so stupid in the future.

That was in 1998. There’s not a call center in the world where that would happen today.

When I worked for Wells Fargo, we started referring to ourselves as “butts in a chair”. Because WF definitely didn’t want us thinking.

All The News That’s Fit to Pit

I thought Rachel was pretty smart and insightful… then I saw her flip-flopping back and forth on some sound-bites without apology.

But then again, it is MSNBC. I refused to watch it for some time, but then started watching it for KO and Rachel…. And even KO is starting to really grate on me. He’s getting a bit sensationalistic at times.

I tweeted to KO and Rachel a few weeks ago about an experience we had with a Vantuckey housing office, and neither one of them seemed to notice. In fact… nobody noticed the tweet at all.

Guess I’m just not glamorous enough.

And the new scam? “Come on in, we have affordable housing!” You bus and light rail to the location, fill out an application, and then get told they will put you on a waiting list.

It just took me twenty minutes of arguing with one … woman about whether they had any actual units open. The director of the program (I already had his email, hee) just got a rather pointed email from me.

I was civil. I wasn’t nice. (And I apologize for hijacking this thread, BSM)

Most bait-and-switch routines are where they give you a cheap move-in fee – on approved credit. After the application and all, they tell you that they have to charge you a higher deposit *and* a higher rent.

Lying and outright fabrications seem de rigeur these days. You think the news is bad? Trying looking for an apartment. Between outright fabrications, scams, bait-and-switch, bidding wars between prospective renters… It’s infected all areas of our society now.

GOP Lawmakers Replaced With High Functioning Protozoa Under Newly Signed “Austerity Measures”

Patently unconstitutional.

Austerity measures can’t be applied to Republicans. It’s against the Umpteenth Amendment.

Could be a sign of chemical dependency. Alcohol and other drugs tend to do that to a person.

Then again, so do kids, which could cause a massive re-appraisal of children as a drug… I have to think on that one.

Gee, Boehner is really trying to sound reasonable, as he tries to whip up more support for delaying on the debt ceiling.

Nice to see the system working the right way for a change.

In Arizona, Suber would have been given a medal and the entire Hernandez family would have been “deported” to one of Brewer’s immigration holding cells.

There are a lot of people in the world whose views and opinions (not to mention actions) cause me to distrust them.

However, if I can’t recognize that they are human beings, and treat them as such, I have proven I am even less worthy of respect than they.

I’m not interested in the race to the bottom that your “Fuck Civility” implies.

Yes, politicians and others need to be called out for their abuse of power. Definitely! But the moment you ditch civility and rational discourse to just throw mud at them, you’ve made yourself a bigger target of scorn than they.

It’s one thing to say “Senator So-and-So is selling his/her votes to the highest bidder”. It’s quite another to just start screeching out epithets and insults.

I agree with Adonai and M’Lady Choice. Your “rant” was childish.

I have experience in a variety of fields, nothing that is considered “professional” level.

Hey all. We made it to San Francisco, and have a place to stay for a couple days. And real internet!

Kind of lost track of the previous comment I posted, because my “mobile” access is so buggy. Finally figured out why: Opera Mini likes to interpret how to process javascripts differently each time I go to a page.

Anyway, going to be hunting for a place to stay and a job here.

Is All That Anger Out There Making You Mad?

Father Jake has siad several times that modern Christians focus on Yeshua’s birth and death. Everything in between is irrelevant.

Pop Quiz: Which of the following are the most-attended days of the Christian calendar?

A. Birth (Christmas)
B. Epiphany
C. Sermon on the Mount
D. Death (Easter)

‘Nuff said?

Now, look up the word “apostate”.

Never Mind The Dangerous Insipidity of Dan Choi

“What has either group done except to whine for all they did not get rather than understand that with opposition to their ideas(most republicans and blue dogs), it takes baby steps.”

Well, for one thing, gay Dems have been donating to campaigns since before Harvey Milk, amid promises that we would finally get the same rights as “normal” people. When it came time for Dems to follow through on that, though, they patted us on the head and said “Maybe next time.” For decades.

As far as the LGBT flocking to the Rethugs in droves, wrong. I don’t know anyone who did that. Not one. Yes, there were those who stayed home. I don’t blame them. Hell, I know plenty of straight Dems who stayed home.

As I’ve said before, I see no reason to vote for anyone that I wouldn’t let sleep on my couch. I definitely won’t vote for anyone who denies me the right to own a couch, either.

Just a Word About Marriage

Quite frankly, KT, I don’t want to get married. I believe the institution has been proven to be worthless. Divorce, domestic violence, abandoned children, emotional abandonment, etc. However, I’m tired of being told that my relationship is inherently worthless, just because my partner and I do it better.

Stupidity, the housing bubble and racism

And yet when I do my “gay separatist” shtick, the same people go absolutely bonkers being compared to Ted Bundy, Britney Spears, and Jimmy Swaggart.

I do that shtick, in order to illustrate what it is like to paint an entire subpopulation as being exactly the same as one idiot who does something criminal. A person who *might* be gay ran over a child the other day, so that is proof that all gay men are homicidal maniacs intent on running over children for a sexual thrill.

One person is caught ripping off the government in a scam using food stamps and child care vouchers, so every person on welfare is doing the same thing.

Momo Gaddafi is straight, right? And so are his murderous sons? Obviously, as far as I can see, psychopathic urges towards genocide is not only a heterosexual trait, it can be passed down through the genes.

Trust me, if you want to win the war, honey, you have to use their tactics against them.

Now, excuse me, I am supposed to be at a demonstration to get Newt Gringrich neutered.

Bageant and Webb: Virginia Will Miss’Em

It’s 3:20 in the morning here, Mom.

Being a welfare queen, there isn’t a lot of reason to keep a so-called “normal” schedule.

And I am very sick and tired at the moment.

But then again, as one of the “Coastal Elites” I probably don’t have feelings anyone else here can relate to. I am taking a few days off of this. I don’t think I can take much more of this.

I’m just trying to make sure I understand what you’re getting at.
