My take on that is trump either didn’t know all the details of Manafort’s and Gates’s crimes, or since he’s been getting away with all of those crimes for all these years, he never thought they’d be caught. He may not have known the extent of M&G’s crimes; he only knew they were “rich” and in his mind, that’s all that matters. Or, as to the second option, he really doesn’t see them as crimes, because no one has ever called him to task for his crimes.

Ad–It’s fake bravado and he’s terrified. He really doesn’t have many options. If he goes to trial, then all of his misdeeds come out. If he pleads guilty, then he’s guilty and goes to jail. Unless, of course, some Russian assassins get him first.

OK – Adam Schiff was at the Sac Press Club on Tuesday. He was superb, and he talked about the two-pronged Russian tactic. First, of course, is that Russia hates Hillary Clinton for hr powerful opposition to their imperial designs. They clearly picked Trump EARLY on – before he declared (this may become important) -to help him get into office. His refusal to enforce sanctions is just one of MANY concerns. Weaking NATO, EU etc. are others. But what they REALLY want is to sow so much division – hence the funding of the NRA – that democracy itself is destroyed. They are now fully fascist (my words, not Schiff’s) that they have to show that the USA is NOT the beacon of hope for oppressed people, that we are corrupt, divided, and faltering. THAT scared me more than anything else he said.

Murph – the days of the intellectual candidate, the Wilsons (racist bastard that he was), Adlai Stevenson (who did lose), etc. are just gone. Obama united a good mind with a great ability to connect with people. Schiff doesn’t have that. I think he COULD.

CL–Agree with you about Obama’s strength being his ability to connect with people. Not so sure I agree with you about that being Hillary’s strength. Don’t get me wrong, I think she is a smart, informed, and well-spoken woman, but I remember many people, even on the left, chastising her for being too pedantic, and accusing her of lecturing people. A lot of that was sexist, IMO, but the perception was still there.

Ad – I look at the Civil Rights movment and anti war movements and see the power of young people. I was part. Greg was the editor of the SF State paper who refused to shut down when so ordered. We changed things. Now we will again.

CL–I’ll take your word about Hillary, but isn’t that the problem? Most voters never get to meet a candidate up close and personal, especially a presidential candidate, so many begin to believe there is no connection, or that the candidate doesn’t relate to them. I agree, though, that Schiff needs to work on this if he wants to continue on the national stage.
