Hey there! You guys were early, sorry I missed you!
adlib 13 hours ago
‘Evening, all. How is everyone tonight?
glenn

Hey glenn! Doing well, and you?
adlib 13 hours ago
Doing well, too, Ad. Finished the “great bicycle quest” with my granddaughter today. She’s buying her bike with her own money, so she was very definite about what she wanted!
glenn

Cool! Sounds like she’s done her research!
adlib 13 hours ago
Yes, she did. All on her phone! As we went from place to place!
glenn

That’s a smart shopper!
adlib 13 hours ago
Hey Harleigh!
adlib 13 hours ago
when I was a kid a schwinn 3 speed was the top of the line… until you had to stop of course. $100 was like a week or 2 pay!
Harleigh

Harleigh – I had Schwinns as well and a 3 speed was boss. But when they came out with 10 speeds, it was bitchin’!
adlib 13 hours ago
glenn while she was doing that did you feel old and stupid!!?? LMAO
Harleigh

Hi Harleigh. We actually looked at several Schwinns. They haven’t changed much from when you and I were kids. However, she wanted hand brakes and we couldn’t find any Schwinns with hand brakes; they all still have coaster brakes, which according to my granddaughter, “are for kids”.
glenn

Harleigh – I call “feeling old and stupid” by its shorter nickname, “McCained”.
adlib 13 hours ago
Harleigh–Yup–but also proud!
glenn

glenn – How old is she?
adlib 13 hours ago
LOL I didn’t know that. My bike had the old hand caliper brakes that were fine unless they got wet, then you had no brakes.
Harleigh

Ad–Good one! She’s 11 going on 42.
glenn

That girl is going places, glenn!
adlib 13 hours ago
Remember the banana seat bikes that sometimes had no brakes?
adlib 13 hours ago
The crap the kids do now used to amaze older folks starting with calculators! remember them? LOL
Harleigh

Ad–I remember seeing those banana seat bikes. I never had a bike of my own until I was an adult.
glenn

Harleigh–they still use calculators; just nowadays the calculators are on their phones!
glenn

I used to take my kids banana seat bike out. LOL it was a blast.
Harleigh

Harleigh–Do you mean you rode your kids’ bikes? Or did you take the banana seat off of the bike?
glenn

Harleigh – Oh yeah, calculators were the iPhones for the previous generation, miracles of technology!
adlib 13 hours ago
Hey Sue!
adlib 13 hours ago
Hello everyone
sueinca

Great to see you at Vox, Sue!
adlib 13 hours ago
Hey Sue, how are you?
glenn

sueinca

Hey PPO, are you with us?
glenn

I think PPO stepped away.
adlib 13 hours ago
Doing well, Sue.
glenn

is everyone enjoying the clown car playing out in the news?
sueinca

Hi SUEINCA from the old HP site??!!
Harleigh

Harleigh and Ad–remember when you had to stay in the same room as the phone to use it?
glenn

So are we all ready for President Marco “Gulp” Rubio?
adlib 13 hours ago
yes sir, harleigh
sueinca

glenn – Yep, had to pull out the antenna too!
adlib 13 hours ago
OMG!!! SHE LIVES!!!!
Harleigh

glenn our phone cord was 25 feet long we took that sucker everywhere lol
sueinca

yes she does Harleigh how are you?
sueinca

I was excited when we got our first touchtone phones. Call me “Gramps”.
adlib 13 hours ago
Ad–Personally, I think little teddie should be the nominee. I don’t want no stinkin’ IRS; I want to have a gun so I can rebel against teddie’s tyranny; and I want to be able to tell YOU what to do because I’m a good xtian!
glenn

Adlib would you believe I resisted an answering machine for years? I thought it was rude lol
sueinca

Ad–antennae were “new wave”. I did love those 25-foot cords too, Sue.
glenn

call Junior at BR549
Harleigh

glenn – Teddy Bore just wants us to imagine everything, then we’ll just imagine him getting thrashed by a Dem if he gets the nom.
adlib 13 hours ago
Sue, yes but I still have my beeper you can reach me on. wink
adlib 13 hours ago
Sue–I sill hate answering machines! I know they’re necessary; but I still hate them!
glenn

I do too, Glenn
sueinca

Anyone remember typewriters?
adlib 13 hours ago
lol me and my 35 words a minute?
sueinca

Anyone remember punch cards?
pinkpantheroz

Ad–Of course. The quick brown fox ate the dog. Or something like that. I took typing as a class in high school and we had to type to music!
glenn

IBM Selectrics? And the exciting new technology of an erase key?
adlib 13 hours ago
punch cards I do remember but not what they looked like
sueinca

I worked at the phone company and used to convince folks to add voicemail to their service for only $7.95 a month!
Harleigh

Punch cards and dictaphones!
glenn

the best invention was the microwave. my first was in 81 and we have never been without one. I don’t like to cook and the question nightly is “is this a fend for yourself night?”

adlib 13 hours ago
Sue – WordPerfect.
adlib 13 hours ago
PPO but the tapes were up to 2,000 feet long. LMAO
Harleigh

Adlib – I knew all the commands, microsoft was a conundrum for me. I resisted
sueinca

glenn – Any slip ups saying “hard drives”?
adlib 13 hours ago
When you stop and think about it, there is so much that we grew up with that is obsolete now. How about pay phones? Are there any left?
glenn

harleigh, yes, and we shuddered when they started hunting!
pinkpantheroz

not many Glenn
sueinca

no payphones
Harleigh

Sue – Hard to imagine that WordPerfect was the main word processor and Word was an upstart.
adlib 13 hours ago
BRB
pinkpantheroz

I know but once I learned microsoft, I wondered why I ever resisted
sueinca

Ad–Don’t think so. Can you have a “hard floppy dick”? Isn’t that an oxymoron?
glenn

I’ve found payphones here and there but they are more disgusting than imagineable…imagine who would be using them nowadays, who doesn’t have a cell phone.
adlib 13 hours ago
Good morning/afternoon/evening Planeteers!
sabreen60

Do they still have pay phones in airports? I was just in the airport and didn’t even look.
glenn

Hey Sabreen!
adlib 13 hours ago
I can remember at the beer distributor typing in on the crt dpack:// and a whole line of numbers and letters to bring that computer up with a disk that was about 23 inches in diameter
sueinca

PPO a 25 MEG hard drive cluster was 5 disks in there 4 X 4 x 2 foot cabinets each and another box for the controller! woo hoo.
Harleigh

Hey Sabreen! Join us on our walk down memory lane!
glenn

Hey Sabreen how are you, MTS I see you too
sueinca

Howdy all
murphthesurf3

I remember my first PC with that monster 20MB hard drive.
adlib 13 hours ago
Hey Murph! We’re talking about all the things we “grew up with” that are now pretty much obsolete. Just reveling in our old age!
glenn

my first was a Compaq and I had that thing until I gave it away in 2004
sueinca

Have you all gotten your “More than Ready for Hillary” Buttons and Yard Signs yet?
murphthesurf3

Hey Murph!
adlib 13 hours ago
brb
sueinca

Doing well Sue. I was reading memory lane. It made me think about the time hubby had to explain vinyl records to his grands.
sabreen60

“Unready For Hillary!!!”
adlib 13 hours ago
Murph–no buttons or signs yet. Have you heard any rumors about other Dem candidates.
glenn

IBM pc, XT and AT !!!! in the 80’s $10,000 withe the RGB 13in monitor and a 30cps dot matrix printer! More computer than most small banks!
Harleigh

Sabreen–did the grands understand the explanation?
glenn

Harleigh–that was your system?
glenn

Harleigh – 286, 386, 487
sabreen60

Sabreen, explaining just vinyls? I’ve had to explain cassette tapes and VHS tapes.
adlib 13 hours ago
I meant 486.
sabreen60

Let alone 8 track tapes! I never understood those in the first place!
adlib 13 hours ago
I was so excited when I got my first 386!
adlib 13 hours ago
Let the kids figure out that reference!
adlib 13 hours ago
Ad–and the difference between Betamax and….?
glenn

AdLid – They saw the little disc that you had to insert in the 45 records and fell in the floor laughing.
sabreen60

Hey Ad–I don’t understand the 386 reference!
glenn

in the 80’s it was 286, I still have my Gateway tower from 1992 in the garage! LMAO started as a 33mgz
Harleigh

glenn – And what a Commodore 64 was.
adlib 13 hours ago
never had a commodore
Harleigh

AdLib – Yep. That’s the first one I bought – Commodore 64
sabreen60

Ad–okay, I get the Commodore 64 reference. Hey, my relatives and friends laugh at me because I don’t have an iphone. I have a “flip phone”. I can do internet; take pictures; and send texts; what else do I need?
glenn

Dos
sabreen60

Sabreen – If you had shown them a 45 of a disco song, it might of been even more hilarious! Although, my daughter does know Village People songs like YMCA. That’s kinda weird.
adlib 13 hours ago
glenn I still have a flip phone and a young aid in the hospital asked me what it was
sueinca

1. Fountain Pen with ink bottle; 2. Roller Balls in your Personal Computer mouse; 3. Film Canisters;4. Chiclets; 5.View Master; 6. And these companies: Sam Goody, Woolworth, Warner Brothers Studio Stores, KB Stores, Ground Round, Chi-Chi’s, Blockbuster, Bennigans, Howard Johnsons, Burger Chef
murphthesurf3

glenn – Harleigh’s been listing the processor model numbers of PCs. The 386 was I believe the 3rd generation of processors.
adlib 13 hours ago
hey I still have an slr that works but use my digital.
sueinca

Sue–sounds as though you and I are sisters! There aren’t many of us left!
glenn

Whoa! Y’all are old. When I think about the good 77 records we melted in the oven to make ashtrays to paint….
sabreen60

Hello SUE IN CA….long time no see….I have a flip phone and it IS my cell phone…let them laugh.
murphthesurf3

mine is really more of a slide phone, i have a real keyboard so I am the older sister glenn
sueinca

Glenn….the list of possibles remains: Chaffee,Webb, Biden, Sanders, and if super pushed Warren
murphthesurf3

Murph–I love my flip phone. I never “butt dial” anyone; it’s small enough to fit in my pocket; and no one else but me knows how to use it. I had to teach my granddaughter how to use it!
glenn

I mean 78 rpms.
sabreen60

LOL sabreen, recors were 45 singles, 33 rpm albums and 78 were the ol music from before the 50’s! LOL
Harleigh

Hey, how about life before VCRs/DVRs/VOD? If you missed a show, too bad, you had to wait for summer reruns to see it. And there were only 3 networks. Remember two dial tvs, one for VHF and one for UHF?
adlib 13 hours ago
My aunt had the Platters on 78rpm
sueinca

Glenn, I am told by a friend at Verizon that they keep trying to get rid of flips but the market studies show that this will drive a sizable number of users away so they stay.
murphthesurf3

I never figured out what the other dial was for adlib
sueinca

And remote controls for tvs when they came out, the way they clicked? That was such an exciting luxury, we were thrilled when we had a tv with a remote.
adlib 13 hours ago
Sue–I stand corrected. Does your keyboard slide out? My friend calls that a “trundle phone”. You know like a trundle bed. LOL stuck_out_tongue
glenn

trundle phone it is
sueinca

Har – Yep. My parents records were 78’s.
sabreen60

Murph–they’re probably waiting for all of us oldsters to die off so they can get rid of flips!
glenn

Adlib we just used to make our younger siblings change the channels.
sueinca

I am repeating my list of things gone bye-bye…..1. Fountain Pen with ink bottle; 2. Roller Balls in your Personal Computer mouse; 3. Film Canisters;4. Chiclets; 5.View Master; 6. And these companies: Sam Goody, Woolworth, Warner Brothers Studio Stores, KB Stores, Ground Round, Chi-Chi’s, Blockbuster, Bennigans, Howard Johnsons, Burger Chef
murphthesurf3

AdLib – If you have Clear TV or some othe antenna it’s still like that.
sabreen60

chicklets are still around at the dollar tree and every dock in Mexico
sueinca

Sue…really….I want some….
murphthesurf3

go to dollar tree they have six packs of them
sueinca

Sue – For my parents, I was the remote control before we got an actual one.
adlib 12 hours ago
Sabreen – Is Clear TV an over the airwaves tv?
adlib 12 hours ago
we figured that is what younger siblings were for – to order around lol
sueinca

Ad, you had more than one Channel???!!!
pinkpantheroz

Ad–What a great remote control you must have made! Glad they don’t make remotes that talk back!
glenn

sueinca – I was banned 7 times at HP due to trolls that now plague, operate and censor that old site. I always had 1,200 – 2,500 fans each time I got banned too! LMAO Years ago people tried to not give away their real name or sex and could hide behind anon av’s and usernames. Each time I got banned I would set up a new throwaway email, reset my dynamic IP and set up a new account at HP. I was HRHolmes1, 2 and 3, Badlib, Librldem, GTIdriver and RGateman. It was fun. The site and the trolls there that now inhabit HP really really suck.
Harleigh

Murph – In my area it was Hot Shoppes, White Tower and for clothes and shoes – I. Millers, K&K Pocketbooks, Ballys.
sabreen60

PPO – Yes, we had channels 2,4,5,7,9,11,13,28(pbs). 8 channels to choose from, who could want more?
adlib 12 hours ago
Murph–Can’t remember the name of the restaurant chain, but do you remember the chain that was always in restored train cars? They had the best prime rib!
glenn

Victoria Station
Harleigh

glenn – The thing I liked least about being a remote control was that when I didn’t change the channel, they’d stick new batteries in me.
adlib 12 hours ago
Harleigh–thanks, that’s it!
glenn

I never go there unless it is to check out a article someone else post, Harleigh. I closed my account about 4 years ago
sueinca

Glenn. I do not.
murphthesurf3

Ad, WOW. We only had one channel in Dublin, RTE Ireland. We did pirate Welsh TV with illegal aerials!
pinkpantheroz

my acct closed too,
Harleigh

Yes! Victoria Station! We used to eat there from time to time but it was kinda upscale, being in a train and all.
adlib 12 hours ago
Ad–I’m not even going to ask where the batteries went! smiling_imp
glenn

we had those stations too, Adlib. We got cable as soon as it was available. My dad liked his television
sueinca

Huffington Post has discovered that its facebook venture has devalued the brand and they are reevaluating now.
murphthesurf3

Yep. We turned cable off and watch movies on Netflix, Hulu and Apple TV.
sabreen60

Howard Johnsons was the best for clams, grilled dogs and 28 flavors of ice cream.
Harleigh

Murph. HP for me is dead, except to check on stuff. Never will have a facebook a/c
pinkpantheroz

ppo you must have listened to Pirate radio too?
sueinca

PPO – Yep, all of those stations were around in LA for some time. Seemed like plenty to choose from back then but why is it that today I can flip around tons of stations and still not find anything I really want to watch?
adlib 12 hours ago
How about A&W Root Beer stands? Any of those still around?
glenn

Yes, Sue! Radio Luxembourg, 208 meters Medium wave, 49.26 meters shiortwave, and of course Radio Caroline!
pinkpantheroz

Swensons, A&W, Woolworth, Anita’s, the other day my daughter and I saw a truck with the name Mervyn’s still on the trailer
sueinca

Our first remote control for the TV had a long metallic cable and a huge box….
murphthesurf3

A&W was the best.
Harleigh

my dad had one of those MTS
sueinca

PPO…I see no way back for HP as a commenting platform.
murphthesurf3

Harleigh–I agree. Loved their root beer floats!
glenn

my best friend’s sister was a roller skating car hop for them
sueinca

Murph, not the way it is now, for sure. Even if they reopened personal accounts, I wouldn’t bother due to the trolling.
pinkpantheroz

Papa cheeseburger, basket of rings…. oh my heart…
Harleigh

Harleigh – Those were unpleasant days, HP back then. Now when you go over there, the comments are no longer much of a draw to read, as Facebookized as they are.
adlib 12 hours ago
Sue–for A&W?
glenn

Hate to be debbie downer, but remember when we couldn’t go in Howard Johnsons
sabreen60

yes, glenn we always got free food
sueinca

The remote at the Murph home
murphthesurf3

Sabreen–why couldn’t you go into Howard JohnsonsC?
glenn

SUEINCA then I was in love with her on her skates!!! LOL
Harleigh

That’s interesting to hear about HP, Murph. If they had only asked, we could have told them that though.
adlib 12 hours ago
PPO…I agree…the place is infested.
murphthesurf3

glenn- one of many places blacks folks weren’t allowed.
sabreen60

Sue–cool!
glenn

Murph are you serious? OMG that is funny. I am sorry I shouldn’t have said that lol
sueinca

Murph–WOW!
glenn

Ad….they did ask and did not get the answer they wanted….
murphthesurf3

BTW, we still had A&W stands out here somewhere a few years ago, don’t know if they’re still around.
adlib 12 hours ago
Sabreen, really? Had I known I never would have stayed at one.
sueinca

yes they are Adlib, some are paired with KFC
sueinca

Oh Sue. Back in the day, you wouldn’t have stayed in many places. That’s the way it was before 1964.
sabreen60

The site and the trolls there that now inhabit HP really really suck. Their comments are the same old @!$%# from Blaze or Bretfart. Lame. I still hope everybody will support my new Palin-Bachmann 2016 ticket fer jebus! glory.
Harleigh

Sabren–Do you believe that was in our lifetime? And that we’re still fighting that shit–only now with gays? Not to mention the shit black folks are still facing.
glenn

Well, HRC has announced. Does she have a real chance?
pinkpantheroz

Murph – The quality of people who would go back to a site that slammed the door on them for profits would propagate an awful and low quality atmosphere there. They could re-open their own comments again but it will be so low grade, nothing like it was.
adlib 12 hours ago
Harleigh–I think you’ve hit the jackpot! An all-female ticket, plus the jebus vote!
glenn

Exactly, Ad. that’s why POV is the Real deal!
pinkpantheroz

We did not have that problem, at least not outright and I would have been too young to really know, Sabreen. All I know is there was zero tolerance for racist remarks in our home. My parents taught us early on to respect everyone, at least until they gave us a reason not to.
sueinca

BRB
glenn

glenn – I never thought we would have to fight for voting rights again. But it just goes to show that the war is not won. The fight continues.
sabreen60

Sue – Yes, it used to be a big deal that Howard Johnson’s was a racist outfit that refused service to African Americans.
adlib 12 hours ago
Thanks PPO!
adlib 12 hours ago
I remember when those places were required by law not to discriminate, Howard Johnsons, Woolworths stores and lunch counter malt shops etc etc.
Harleigh

Ad…..apparently the folks at the top do not like that HP is now as trashy as most of the comment sites….I think your prediction is pretty much the same.
murphthesurf3

I think MLK got it though, he was fond of saying that Sabreen. Perhaps he knew, even then, every little victory would be cause for some to work harder in the opposite direction. Right now they are testing it on LGBT
sueinca

Murph, Ad got it right when he said that HP is digging its own grave for treating us so poorly. I’ll never comment there.
pinkpantheroz

Har – I lived in DC. Sometimes people forget that DC is the south. There were many places we couldn’t go to when I was a kid. And there were places that you knew you wouldn’t be welcomed long after 1964.
sabreen60

Harleigh – I go there as part of my work here and the comments section has devolved to a very simple pattern. A couple reasonable comments or one liners then a troll comment that sucks everyone in like rubes. Rinse and repeat.
adlib 12 hours ago
BRB, Smoko!
pinkpantheroz

What may have been true about the online ‘news’ and discussion site has gone off the rails. Most of the ‘articles’ comments have to go through a censorship process that can take 15 minutes on a light article and over an hour on many others. This eliminates any dissension or discussion modes of most articles rendering them as useless as Faux news. Subjects that would normally garner several thousand comments in a few hours now get maybe under a thousand after several days and 30 minutes or more between comments posted, a few pending comments that the censors have not yet gone through and the rest just disappears. Looks like the teabaggers got this site locked up like the blaze!
Harleigh

Murph – Yep, we discussed this and it sure seemed obvious that being Facebook-only, it would degrade into an intellectual swamp. Now that it has…they’re surprised?
adlib 12 hours ago
That was a email in response to something I stated online
Harleigh

I never go to Huff Puff and never link to any article. I’m feeling the same way about “The Hill” and “Politico”. The comment sections are just awful.
sabreen60

Harleigh….I spend my time at three sites that do not censor but community moderate. Two sites use a member flagging system with real sanctions and seemto be succeeding.
murphthesurf3

Ad…right on the mark.
murphthesurf3

They were trying to piggy back on FB’s supposed popularity, sometimes there it is a swamp too. I saw this post today. “Dear FB friends, here comes the season of political disagreements. Im a Republican and will post or share about the other parties or my partys nominees. Please dont feel the need to post on my post about what i posted I wont do it in your posts. Dont try to make a point against what i posted. I did iy because is what i believed to the truth and dont need anybody to try to probe me wrong. There are lies and misconceptions about every single candidate. Thanks”
sueinca

Nearly half of the open commenting sites are now gone as the problem of trolling and member conduct has proven so unmanageable.
murphthesurf3

PPO – It just seems to be common sense. The bloggers are the ones who gave HP its success and character. Arianna and the execs have egos too big to have accepted that, they needed to believe that it was all due to their brilliance and seeing the bloggers there reminded them of what BS that was. So, I think there was a natural psychological urge to diminish the value of bloggers and of course, once they did, the tabloid quality of the site got crappier.

Murph – I really like Spandan at The Peoples View. He’s got a great article on the Doc Fix bill PBO just signed. And he’s done a thorough examination of TPP. I also like PoliticsUSA, Stonekettle, a few others and of course here. I’ll read what people like to on Twitter or the blogs I frequent.

Sabreen–I just read a book by Gregg Iles called “Mississippi Burning” and although it was fiction; it was about the original fight for votig rights in Mississippi. It’s his newest and if you like historical fiction, this is a great book. As I was reading it, I was thinking, it may not be as overt or as sanctioned now, but it is still happening. And that saddens me to no end. As the song goes, “When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?”

Sabreen – I do go to HP because I think it’s important as an Admin here to stay up to date with that and other sites but I too will never link to an article there. Sue – When you get a chance give this a read:

http://www.thepeoplesview.net/main/2015/4/14/obama-administration-defang-iran-war-caucus
Did the Obama Administration Just Defang the War Hawks on the #IranDeal?
This morning, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed a resolution on giving Congress a vote on the Iran deal. Far from the original hawkish legislation, however, the compromise that emerged after days of lobbying on Capital Hill by administration officials seems to have defanged the war caucus by shortening the review period, giving the president a veto over Congressional objections, and dropping extraneous poison pill provisions.

adlib 12 hours ago
The “Compromise” in Congress leaves Congress only deciding if it will alter its own sanctions (which can then be vetoed for which there are not enough votes to override). Obama playing chess again.

For what it’s worth, here’s Elizabeth Warren’s article on the TPP, a quote from it first: “The United States is in the final stages of negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a massive free-trade agreement with Mexico, Canada, Japan, Singapore and seven other countries. Who will benefit from the TPP? American workers? Consumers? Small businesses? Taxpayers? Or the biggest multinational corporations in the world? One strong hint is buried in the fine print of the closely guarded draft. The provision, an increasingly common feature of trade agreements, is called “Investor-State Dispute Settlement,” or ISDS. The name may sound mild, but don’t be fooled. Agreeing to ISDS in this enormous new treaty would tilt the playing field in the United States further in favor of big multinational corporations. Worse, it would undermine U.S. sovereignty. ISDS would allow foreign companies to challenge U.S. laws — and potentially to pick up huge payouts from taxpayers — without ever stepping foot in a U.S. court.”

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/kill-the-dispute-settlement-language-in-the-trans-pacific-partnership/2015/02/25/ec7705a2-bd1e-11e4-b274-e5209a3bc9a9_story.html
The Trans-Pacific Partnership clause everyone should oppose
The Investor-State Dispute Settlement provision would undermine U.S. sovereignty.

murphthesurf3

If Warren is against it then it is definitely a POS treaty. I trust her completely in those matters.
Harleigh

AdLib – We had this discussion. TPP and TIPP has not been finalized. The closest thing to it S 1900, which can be read on line. But here’s my bottom line. I don’t believe PBO would be selling out American workers after fighting so hard for the middle class and poor people. In fact, he said today that he does not work for the Chamber of Commerce or the Business Roundtable.
sabreen60

Well I have some good reading material for the morning, thanks ad and sabreen
sueinca

Murph – Warren says categorically that ISDS is included in the TPP as it stands today. If that’s the case, this is dangerous. If it is not then she deservedly should lose credibility.
adlib 12 hours ago
Ad–as PPO says, that sure is a worrying quote. Actually, quite scary.
glenn

I believe Warren…and it just goes to illustrate my concern….this is a secret deal.
murphthesurf3

Since when should Big Business dictate to the Con…….Oops! Silly Me!
pinkpantheroz

Murph – you can read S 1900 on line. I believe that was written in 2014. But as Spandan points out, when it’s final, Congress (public) will have 90 days to vote it up or down. I really don’t see why Elizabeth Warren and others are setting their hair on fire before the thing is even final.
sabreen60

Sab…I hope you and your sources are correct in this….we have not done well by our lower and middle class workers in these agreements.
murphthesurf3

SAB…I think Warren has inside info on this.
murphthesurf3

Warren never lies and tells it like it is in a professional and sometimes passionate way. She’s first and the krugman on those issues… That they totally understand.
Harleigh

According to Spandan TPP will correct what is wrong with NAFTA. If TPP goes away then NAFTA stays.
sabreen60

Sabreen – We did debate this and I respect your, CL’s and Spandan’s positions on this. For me, the issue is that the argument for not opposing the TPP is based on an old proposal. Warren says the ISDS is in this new proposal. If it is, we need to oppose it. If it’s not and she is crying wolf, she will lose her standing to many including me. I am withholding full judgement until the actual draft is made public but my hunch is that the ISDS is in the TPP.
adlib 12 hours ago
Har – I didn’t say Warren was lying. She is not an expert in all things. I’m just saying before drawing a line in the sand, do your own research.
sabreen60

Well it has been nice but I am going to shut down and go read for awhile. Good night all, it was so good talking to everyone. BTW Spandan has never ever steered me wrong, when I don’t get something he always clears it up. Better him than a politician.

murphthesurf3

Multinational trade deals are way beyond my scope! LOL
Harleigh

Sabreen, Murph–so is there still time for that ISDS to be deleted from the TPP, or at least debated? After the public input, will they draft another version?
glenn

Har – Honestly I’m not part owner in Spandan’s TPV web site. smiley But he breaks stuff down so that even I can understand it. And if I can understand, I’m pretty sure everybody in this chat room can, too.
sabreen60

Sabreen – One of the reasons I take Warren’s position to heart is that I’m not aware of an incident where she claimed something that wasn’t the case. I think Spandan is earnest in his views and I think Warren is as well but Warren has access to more actual information on the TPP and I can’t imagine why she would throw away her credibility on something like this that she knew could blow up in her face. I am more predisposed to believe her then to believe that the TPP, unlike every other global trade deal in modern history, will be good for American workers.
adlib 12 hours ago
AdLib – I don’t know what Spandan has access to. I’ve read S 1900 and listened to President Obama. Sorry, I believe the President over Elizabeth Warren.
sabreen60

Sab- you are pushing me to give this another look…why are unions so opposed do you think? Again, apparently site unseen.
murphthesurf3

Sabreen, I know that Spandan does not have access to highly confidential documents like the TPP but a US Senator can. This is not S 1900 so basing everything on that is I think a mistake. As you say yourself, we don’t know what all is in this so how could an old bill be used to argue what is or isn’t in it? As I mentioned last time, it’s not a litmus test, one can support Pres. Obama yet still oppose his positions on particular policies.
adlib 11 hours ago
well if warren and POTUS seem to be at odds then is it real or some chess moves? geez….
Harleigh

It’s that time again when I say, “good night.” Sabreen and Murph, I have really enjoyed your discussion here tonight. I’m sure it will continue for a few weeks as we (maybe) get more info on TPP. For the time being, I have to call it a night, though. Harleigh, Ad, and everyone else, I truly enjoyed our trip down memory lane. pinkpantheroz

Same here, glenn! Great chat tonight, have a great weekend riding bikes with your granddaughter!
adlib 11 hours ago
Murph – All I know is that people seem to be giving this thing a knee-jerk reaction. I honestly don’t know about certain unions. I know that people repeat stuff over and over on Twitter and you ask them if they’ve read anything and they say they haven’t. I’ll be the first to admit being wrong ONCE the final is put forth. Until then I trust PBO. I don’t think he would intentionally do anything to hurt American workers. After all, would he want that as part of his legacy. No fuck the legacy. He’s worked too hard and been subjected to far too much bullshit to be a sell out now.
sabreen60

murphthesurf3

Harleigh – Huh?
pinkpantheroz

Good night glenn. Take care.
sabreen60

Harleigh – My guess…and it is a total guess that could be proven absolutely wrong, is that Obama is trying to make a deal that will solve some urgent trade issues and willing to make certain trade offs that he thinks makes the deal worth it. Warren seems to be drawing a line in the sand that says, no matter how beneficial other aspects are, they’re not worth agreeing to the ISDS.
adlib 11 hours ago
AdLib – As VP Biden says the TPP is BFD. This not just some little bill that PBO is supporting. This not some little thing that one may disagree with him about. If he’s stabbing American workers in the back, this is BFD.
sabreen60

murphthesurf3

Har – I don’t know a lot about Gitmo. I do know that Bernie Sanders and others voted NOT to fund the removal of prisoners to Federal prisons. However, I think at least half have been moved out so far to other countries.
sabreen60

TPP will be coming forward to a blog near us real soon. LOL
Harleigh

Har- I will be glad when the final is done so the public can read it.
sabreen60

sabreen it is still merikas torture center run by the navy and the cia, no charges or trials in well over 10 years.
Harleigh

Sabreen – Just because some oppose Obama’s position on this, doesn’t mean they’re exhibiting kneejerk reactions, don’t think Obama is honest or any of such attributes. I do agree with you that we just don’t know a lot about it now but I don’t think Warren would lie about having seen what she has of it. So I do believe that when it becomes public, it’s likely that provision will be in it. If it’s not and it’s good for American workers as a whole, I will support it and I will be critical of Warren.
adlib 11 hours ago
Sabreen….what else do you recommend that we read?
murphthesurf3

AdLib – I presume YOU have read all about the TPP. Therefore, I was not talking about YOU. I think I said on Twitter when you ask people if they’ve read anything about TPP they say no.
sabreen60

Harleigh – I have a variety of issues with Obama, on surveillance of Americans, on the treatment of whistleblowers, on the wider use of secrecy to keep the public from learning about many areas that it used to be able to. But in general, I support his positions on most policies.
adlib 11 hours ago
Murph – Read S 1900. As far as I know that’s the only draft I know of.
sabreen60

Sab… I just pulled it up and have found two commentaries….now on my list.
murphthesurf3

I think glenn asked earlier if the ISPS is in the TPP, if it could be removed along the way. The problem with Congress agreeing to Fast Track is that they are only allowed an up or down vote so if that is in it, it can’t be removed by Congress.
adlib 11 hours ago
Whoops, I meant ISDS!
