We have made it through NEW YEAR’S EVE and are now starting a NEW YEAR!  We have survived the Fiscal Cliff Bungee Jump just to find ourselves about to deal with the raising of the roof or the debt ceiling.  Same old game but a few new players.  However, we still have the same Team Captains.  Congress is like a bad soap opera, one cliff hanger leads to the next!  So, As the World Turns, All My Children, the Young and Restless, the Bold and Beautiful, Search For Tomorrow, looking for the Guiding Light, for Another World, but with One Life to Live, we are bound to end at the General Hospital.  And, regardless of “deer in the headlights eyes” Michelle Bachmann tries,  we all have Obamacare!  ENJOY!

To all of you, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!  I am sure this year will provide us with lots more cartoons, funny and not so funny.  Please note that occasionally I may slip in a few that appear to lean the wrong way.  Since most of us are already in on the joke, don’t take them any other way than they are just to show how those other guys complain.  And, on local issues in different states or parts of the world, I may not (well, probably won’t) know the right from the wrong on issues.  Don’t hold it against me if I post any cartoon that’s not the correct objective.  Consider the source and don’t throw rotten eggs at me.  (But, I do like to hear your comments!) You can’t imagine how many bad ones I have to read to find the good ones.  After awhile none of them are too funny anymore when your brain is fried …………… However, I enjoy doing it and hope you all ENJOY!

Retired, not by choice but the body said sit down! Married with two grown daughters and 3 grandchildren. Best friend is Mansion, my great dane. Love to laugh, love to make someone laugh, love to make new friends. I think I am a lot of fun but you can be the judge of that.

I was going to put this in the Sunday Funnies but I can’t because it needs a disclaimer! (I usually would have just skipped and not posted this one but it hit me hard and mad be angry!) The figure used in the cartoon is from Planned Parenthoods annual report. You are sure to hear more about it. But, there is no cartoon that shows anything else from the report such as:
“The annual report revealed that in addition to providing abortions, Planned Parenthood also provided STD treatment and testing to 4.5 million people. The organization additionally provided cancer prevention and screening for 1.3 million.”

Sally–have to add my compliments to all the others. As ChoiceLady says, the way you “theme” the cartoons, the wide range of views and geography is just amazing. Thanks for all your hard work.

Glad to see grovernorquist took a couple of hits this week. Couldn’t happen to a “nicer guy” as far as I’m concerned. What an idiot!

I loved your soap opera references; and the first cartoon with Dick Clark was very thoughtful.

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all of your hard work in compiling these every week.

Thank you, Glenn. I always think of you when I find a Norquist one as I know how much you like him….NOT! I liked that one with Dick Clark and thought it was a nice way to start. I also like the one with the Obama’s on the couch and thinking of MLK. I have heard that Martin Luther King Jr is going to be a theme at this years inauguration and thought that one a good one to close with along with the “New Canvas”:

“Obama will be sworn in first on Jan. 20, the date set by the Constitution, but it will be done in private since the day falls on a Sunday. His public swearing-in the next day also falls on the federal holiday honoring civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., branding the occasion with another layer of historical significance, especially for African-Americans.”

And, thank you for taking the time to let me know you appreciate seeing them! It always means a lot to me, Glenn, and you are always good about letting me know. :)

        Hi Sally,

I didn’t know that about the MLK connection to the inaugaration. When I used to teach about MLK, I could never get through the “I Have A Dream” speech without tearing up. Even when I just quoted the most famous line (…content of character…), I still got teary-eyed. Thanks for the info., between your cartoons and your (and others’) comments, I’m always learning something here at the Planet.

Thank you, KT. Okay, tell me you got the soap opera list….you are old enough to remember those. Even if you never watched them, I bet your mom or grandmother did. I was kinda proud of that, silly me.

      • Oh, I certainly remember them. I was never into them, but millions of Americans were.

I actually met Dick Clark and got his autograph. I was in the 8th grade and he was the MC for a concert by The Association. A friend and I snuck backstage and got Clark’s autograph and one member of the Association’s. I can’t even remember the guy’s name now.

Hey there Sally T….just spent 45 minutes walking through your weekly gallery of hard hitting political whimsy.

So much here and almost all of it top drawer.

I appreciate the way in which you organize so much material by topic- what an effort.

I appreciate the extraordinary number of sources from which you draw your material – from left, center and right. And yes, I agree that featuring material across the spectrum is of value. First of all, it is a fair presentation of editorial opinion. Secondly, it provides insight into the thinking of those representing a variety of opinions (some which I regard as deeply troubling but still worth knowing). Thirdly, so many are just so clever even when I do not agree with them.

    Such an effort!

    Thank you.

Murph, thank you for noticing that I try my best to keep the cartoons running in topic order. Over several days you find new ones to slip in between others. I try to make them read like a story line, if I can. I know that there are a lot but it is hard to weed them down. Foreign papers have some great ones. I always like to stick in a few non-political, too. Just for laughs.

Thanks also for letting me know that you aren’t offended by seeing the crazies from the dark side. Some are funny, as you say, even if we don’t agree with them. Like AdLib says, most just show how they are complaining. But, we have our fun with the “rednecks”, too.

I had two favorites this time. One was the ladies coming into Congress. One worried that the men might get ulcers and the other lady saying that the male body has ways of shutting that down. (Of course it has to be a legitimate ulcer.) And, my second favorite are the two Christmas trees at the bar, both thrown out after the New Year.

Again, thank you for letting me know you ENJOYED them!

Hi Sally – those two are faves of mine as well! I also LOVED the old couple reporting the theft of GOP credibility! That made me laugh out loud!!!

Thank you again for the wide range of views, the wide geographical sources, and just an all-around insightful set of ‘toons that are both entertaining AND instructive.

We all appreciate the consistent high level work you’re doing here, the way in which you do keep the themes running, and we thank you for an invaluable Sunday addition. The NY Times should bow before you!

CL, I don’t think the police will find the couple’s lost credibility of the Repugs party, do you? I watched the movie Lincoln last night and from then to now things haven’t changed much, Except the parties switched big time. As Lyndon Johnson said as he signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, “We have lost the South for a generation.” Oh well, Lyndon, they weren’t worth holding onto. If you haven’t seen it, CL, it is a great movie. You will enjoy it.

I did see it, Sally, and as a trained historian (you CAN do this at home) I thought it was quite amazing. I had just seen a new play, “All the Way” about LBJ’s work to get the Civil Rights bill passed, and the similarities are astonishing.

Someone noted of both the play and the film that in the U.S. even the most high level moral good sometimes has to be obtained through the basest of means. If one takes the long view, it’s sort of funny. But the question neither the play nor the film answered is what drives a fairly ordinary man to pursue an ideal that in NO way benefits himself? If we could find MORE of that – and I think Obama has that quality – we’d be a richer nation. LBJ could easily have lost the ’64 election. Lincoln gave his life and knew that was a possibility.

Wow. So thank you especially for the link about January 21. It was deeply meaningful, too.
