The Best Apology from Limbaugh would be for Limbaugh to Leave the Air…
His absence is the only “I’m sorry” that will do.

IT IS TIME TO PUSH THIS CREATURE FROM THE AIRWAVES.
WE NEED TO CALL, WRITE, CALL, COMPLAIN, BOYCOTT

AOL Computer Services, online data backup service provider Carbonite, software maker Citrix Systems Inc., professional sports team The Cleveland Cavaliers, online conference organizer GoTo Meetings, online legal document services company LegalZoom, flower company ProFlowers, mortgage lender Quicken Loans and mattress companies Sleep Train and Sleep Number all have announced they have pulled theirads in reaction to Limbaugh’s comments (i.e. the Boycott Campaign).

There is still a lot of work to be done. The issue is not just Rush. It is also about all of the right wing pundits on the airwaves who have operated without accountability. It is another place where progressives can gather in solidarity and get results. It is a way of animating those who were beginning to wonder if anything could be done by anyone to stem the nastiness of Talk Radio (and by association, the internet blogs, Fox et.al.)

So, who is the boycott putting pressure on…..

Rush broadcasts on Clear Channel which is owned by Bain Capital. Clear Channel Communications (parent company of Premiere Radio Networks, Inc.) can be contacted at 200 Basse Road San Antonio TX 78209 Phone 1-210-822-2828

Premiere Radio Networks can be reached at

and

The following companies appear on various lists of sponsors who continue to support the Limbaugh show. This is the most recent update as of March 5, 2012. Note: Some of the listed sponsors do not contract with the Limbaugh Show but with Clear Channel. Some have used this as an “out” to avoid canceling ads saying that they are not responsible for ad placements by Clear Channel. It’s not working and the pressure on them continues.

UPDATE ON THE BOYCOTT:

13 National Advertisers have now dropped him

Newest drops: National advertisers Allstate, Sears, and Tax Resolution

New West Broadcasting, KPUA AM 670 in Hilo, Hawaii announced that it is immediately discontinuing the Rush Limbaugh program. Seven other stations across the country have indicated that they are thinking of doing the same.

And here is the first of the local stories that I think will start popping up. Local activists are calling local stations to get lists of advertisers and using lists they have generated by listening to the show. From the Kingstown, Va. “Patch”– “Two local businesses — carpet cleaners Hadeed Carpet and Rug and replacement window company Thompson Creek — pulled their advertisements from WMAL (105.9 FM and AM 630), which runs Limbaugh’s show, during that program.” http://kingstowne.patch.com/articles/local-businesses-drop-advertisements-from-rush-limbaugh-show

Two companies have responded that they do not intend to drop the show but “appreciate the input”….LifeLock and Lear Capital

UPDATE 4:30 PM CST MARCH 6, 2012

30 COMPANIES HAVE NOW WITHDRAWN FROM LIMBAUGH’S SHOW;
5 REMAIN

Auto Zone, Bare Essentials, Lending Tree, Mid-West National Life Insurance Company of Tennessee, Oreck Vacuums, and Mission Pharmacal no longer have commercials on Rush Limbaugh. They appear NOT to have individual contracts with Limbaugh’s show, but did have general contracts with Clear Channel which place commercials on the show.

When added to the previous 24….that makes a current total of 30! 5 Remain. There are questions about eharmony but I can find nothing definitive.

Singing duo “Reformed Whores” delivers a musical message to Rush: “I’m a Slut.”

Rush Limbaugh Show Includes Over 5 Minutes Of Dead Air As Advertiser Exodus Continues

Rush Limbaugh’s advertising exodus is deep into its second week, and despite the radio host’s claim that the impact of 50 companies pulling their business has been negligible, listeners in the nation’s largest media market were treated to over five minutes of radio silence where Limbaugh’s advertisers once stood today.

There were four separate instances during this afternoon’s broadcast on WABC 770 AM in New York City where the network fell silent.

As Media Matters reports, of the 86 ads that made it on the air today, 77 of them were free public service announcements donated by the Ad Council. An additional seven ads were from companies that are in the process of pulling their spots from the show, leaving just two ads during the entire three hour broadcast that were purposefully paid to appear during the program.

Rush is not alone out there as we all know. I saw Paula Deen as number one on Yahoo!’s Trending Now section. Had to look as I have never had a fondness for this lady. Something has always stuck me that she was a little “off”. Well, one thing for certain, she is a true southern of the worst kind.

Just got an interesting email back from Allstate (I wrote back and thanked her):
Dear [escribacat];

We believe that everyone deserves an individual response, and we value the questions and feedback we receive. Therefore, we’d like to take this opportunity to respond to your email.

Allstate’s advertising purchase strategy has not included the Rush Limbaugh Show. On March 5, 2012, we responded to inquiries about our advertising relationship with the show by stating we did not advertise on or sponsor it. As radio listeners notified us that they were hearing Allstate ads during the show that same afternoon, we contacted the vendor that arranges for our advertising placements and discovered that an error had been made and advertising time had mistakenly been purchased for the show.

We regret providing mistaken information about this situation. We have asked our media buying firm to correct the error by discontinuing any advertising on the Rush Limbaugh Show moving forward in keeping with our original advertising plans and strategies.

Thank you for contacting Allstate.

Sincerely,

Great work Murph and all you posters! I’ve signed at least a half dozen petitions, posted them on Facebook, phoned local stations to remove Rush’s show and called some advertisers. I learned today that here in MA one of the stations that has dropped his show is located in Pittsfield, MA.

I do like the idea of following up with advertisers and thanking them for dropping Rush’s show.

Today is primary day here in MA – I thought about voting in the R primary but decided that they’ve done so much damage to themselves that my vote wasn’t needed. I will vote positively instead for Obama, who must win in NOvember.

Agreed, people should send positive emails and/or consider patronizing businesses that do the right thing and pull their ads from Rush.

I think even Lonesome was a better person than Rush. I still can’t believe that was Andy Griffith. He was great in that role.

SallyT
Member

lalalu, you may have a point there. Did you know that was Andy Griffith film debut in that movie? He was a totally different Andy from the Sheriff of Mayberry, wasn’t he. There is a truth at the end of the movie that I am afraid will play out with Rush. It was a statement that Walter Matthau makes to Lonesome after Lonesome Rhodes has hit bottom. He tells him the fact that Lonesome Rhodes is not really destroyed at all. Matthau tells him that both the public’s, and the network’s need for Rhodes will, “after a decent interval” of remorse and public contrition, return him to the public eye; first locally (maybe only radio at first) and then, at some reduced level, nationally. I would be surprised if Rush is taken completely off the air. However, I think this movie relates in more ways than one.

I so agree.

One of my favorite films, glad so many more people know about it now after Olbermann dubbed Glenn Beck “Lonesome Rhodes”.

Here’s a quote from it:

Lonesome Rhodes: “Rednecks, crackers, hillbillies, hausfraus, shut-ins, pea-pickers – everybody that’s got to jump when somebody else blows the whistle. They don’t know it yet, but they’re all gonna be ‘Fighters for Fuller’. They’re mine! I own ’em! They think like I do. Only they’re even more stupid than I am, so I gotta think for ’em.”

kesmarn

Murph, thanks so much for the very valuable info. I’ve had so little time lately, but I wanted to add my two cents worth — especially with Premiere Network (and its Bain/Romney connection). So I did. But in the process I stumbled on this very articulate comment from a woman on Premiere’s FB page and wanted to share it:

I’m fed up with all the men like Limbaugh who demonize and belittle women for our concerns about contraception. They will never have to face the personal terror, upheaval, grief, pain, wrenching choices, and high cost of an unwanted, unplanned pregnancy.
Limbaugh asked, “What happened to personal responsibility and accountability [for birth control,]” but predictably, he aimed that question only at women and girls.
Why doesn’t Limbaugh criticize our society’s childish and irresponsible male culture which encourages and admires men who are skilled as manipulative, lying, sexual predators who use and discard (without consequences) as many different women and girls as they possibly can during their lives? To such men, frequent sex with the maximum number of women is just a challenging game, a personal measure of success, and a physical pleasure. They trivialize sex and make it impersonal. They are destructive, selfish, mentally ill sociopaths … but our society idolizes them.
Such men ignore the fact that, for their female “scores,” one unprotected sexual encounter could threaten their entire future … their education, careers, family relationships, financial stability, and health.
Our society suffers when large numbers of otherwise productive women become trapped, frustrated, isolated, poor, and hopeless. We all suffer when millions of unplanned children are born, unwanted and possibly resented, to women who are unprepared or unable to care for them properly, and to girls who are too young.
Every woman and girl deserves and NEEDS affordable, consistent, and easy access to effective birth control methods and reproductive health care.

kesmarn

That’s what I thought too, e’cat. It was just a great rebuttal of all RL’s bluster, wasn’t it?

Khirad

You know, it is possible to have casual hookups without being an irresponsible jerk or a ‘slut’.

I think the point should have focused more on the hypocrisy of wanting one while opposing the other.

Just sayin’. I was on board with that and then it got a little cliché and went into bitter anti-man stereotype territory.

And not just misogynist assholes like Rush, but it I kinda felt it started to generalize. I get it, you’re being generalized, and you’re pissed, but some of us guys were with you in the first place too, you know?

kesmarn
Admin

Can it be? Do we disagree? Maybe. I think the point she’s making is not that all men are jerks and she’s bitter. I think she’s saying that in American culture (and many others, too) there’s no word for men that compares with the word “slut” for women. A guy who beds 20 women in a month is viewed how in America? Negatively? Nuh-uh. Turn the tables and even in 2012 when a woman has 20 different men she’s going to raise some eyebrows. I’m not (and she may not be…I can’t speak for her) taking any kind of stand at all on the benefits/hazards/morality of multiple, frequent and casual hookups. Just taking note of the way these things are perceived, depending on the hooker-up’s gender.

So “slut” packs an emotional punch that “dog” or “player” doesn’t.

It’s kind of like saying that the N-word is bad, but so is calling a white person “honky.” The two aren’t equal. There’s no white person equivalent to the N-word.

The same goes for pejoratives for gay and lesbian people. Is there an equivalent for straight folks? Not really.

I guess I think of it in a way similar to a workplace power balance. My patients can make jokes at my expense and there’s no sense of exploitation there. But if I made fun of them, that’s an ethical violation. They’re in no position to really fight back.

And even in the 21st century, amazingly, women aren’t either. The only reason Limbaugh even gave a phony apology is not because women are powerful (necessarily). It’s because Bain Capital yanked on his leash. He never would have otherwise.

But that’s not the same thing as saying all men are like Rush. They obviously aren’t. Thank God! It also doesn’t mean the culture has evolved to treat casual sex on the part of women exactly as it does the same on the part of men.

If Rush had beefed about the cost of Viagra and contraception equally and eliminated the moral judgments, he might have survived this one. As it is, I don’t think he will.

KillgoreTrout
Member

kes, I don’t approve of ever calling a woman such a derogatory name such as “slut,” or “whore.” I like to think we got over that sort of thing with the sexual revolution and the women’s movement, but obviously we haven’t. Men who use those terms are thoughtless cretins and hypocrites. There is no call to degrade women in such a manor.
The “C” word that is thrown at women is also a vile and disgusting attack.
Unfortunately, enlightenment is not something that happens to us all, at the same time. Many different people reach awareness at different times in their lives, and some people never attain it, because they are stuck on stupid. They choose to remain ignorant and callous and bigoted and I think they should be called out whenever engaging in such mean and base behavior.

kesmarn
Admin

Thanks, KT! Yes, I never meant to imply that there is not a percentage of women who are in to the casual conquest, too. It was the use of the word “slut” to describe them, when in most cases that word would not be applied to men who indulged in the exact same behaviour. It’s like saying to one group: “You should be ashamed of yourselves,” and to the other: “Way to go, dudes!”

SallyT
Member

Khirad, personally I think if a person, male or female, that are engaging in casual sex upon mutual agreement and with protection there is a word that covers both the male and female…..lucky!

🙂

KillgoreTrout
Member

I agree with this paragraph 100%….”Every woman and girl deserves and NEEDS affordable, consistent, and easy access to effective birth control methods and reproductive health care.”

I will not deny that there are some pretty sleazy, irresponsible men in this world. But I think in many cases men aren’t totally to blame. Unless you’re talking about rape, in any of it’s nasty forms, many women today act like men and have their own sexual “conquests.” It is often a two way street.

I think a woman shouldn’t be the sole user of contraception, either. Men, of good conscience and responsibility should also use contraception in the form of condoms, especially if it’s casual sex. Condoms are the smart thing to do, not only as a contraception device, but also as a means to prevent the spread of STDs and HIV.

Patricia Heaton was/is the spokesperson for “Feminists for Life” a militant anti-abortion group, one leader of which used to be a leader of Project Rescue in Buffalo, NY the other leaders of which are powerful Dominionist Christians. Heaton therefore needs to be considered pretty “out there” politically. Apparently Heaton is knee-jerk enough to say the things she says about Fluke, NONE of which are what Fluke discussed. I’m putting in the entire email for reference.

please send an email to Armed Forces Network, asking them to support servicewomen and women veterans and stop airing Rush Limbaugh’s radio program.

In addition to the eleven sponsors that have withdrawn their advertising from Rush Limbaugh’s radio program, now a group of female veterans are calling on Armed Forces Network to drop Rush Limbaugh from its programming. Here is an excerpt from the letter they sent to the network:
Rush Limbaugh has a freedom of speech and can say what he wants, but in light of his horribly misogynistic comments, American Forces Radio should no longer give him a platform. Our entire military depends on troops respecting each other – women and men. There simply can be no place on military airwaves for sentiments that would undermine that respect. When many of our female troops use birth control, for Limbaugh to say they are “sluts” and “prostitutes” is beyond the pale. It isn’t just disrespectful to our women serving our country, but it’s language that goes against everything that makes our military work.
Support servicewomen and women veterans by joining their call: send an email to Armed Forces Network, asking them to stop airing Rush Limbaugh’s radio program.

Keep fighting,
