In case you forgot to mark your calendar, this is the supposedly the last day that you need a calendar. Yes, the end of the world has been scheduled for exactly 6 pm Pacific  Screwball Time today…it was going to be at midnight but a wine tasting was already booked at that time.

So, this weekend’s theme is about going out with a bang and celebrating like there ain’t no tomorrow!

It’s the End of the World – REM

Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin

End of the Line – The Travelling Willburys

When Will I See You Again – The Three Degrees

Bye Bye Miss American Pie – Don McClean

Devil With a Blue Dress On – Mitch Ryder

Hello Goodbye – The Beatles

Spirit in the Sky – Norman Greenbaum

Your turn…but take your time, it’s not like it’s the end of the world or anything.

Good morning, everyone, globally. There is, indeed, as CCatLady showed, “a morning after”. Yesterday, during the moments the End was to come, I was getting an award from a secular human rights groups for standing for religious freedom. During the ceremony, I kept thinking of the people who had believed Harold Camping and who had given up everything for the hope of endless peace. Today they are bereft, fearful, maybe worse, and I just plain feel sorry for them.

But there should be something positive from this for them – the understanding that there is NOT an ‘elect’ that is separate from the rest, that God loves better, that is entitled to what others are not. Oh, sure, good sense should prevail – beware of false prophets – but beyond that maybe some humility and return to the sense of the common rather than exclusive good?

In the meantime, I hope they can find solace. A lot of Oakland area churches are opening their doors to the believers who are now so lost, shattered. Rather than reminding them of their gullibility, the other churches are reminding people they are still loved. I hope that helps.

Maybe we are beginning a new cycle of respect for one another, of inclusiveness? From the public employees under assault in the Midwest to the universalists who do not judge others’ beliefs, we are beginning, I hope, to come together. So there IS a morning after for everyone. World without end, Amen.

Hey choice. Congrats on your receiving the award. Standing for religious freedom is a patriotic and spiritual thing to do.
I wish I could share your optimism though. Many of these people just seem to refuse reason, and will forever think of themselves as “better.” The whole nature of fundamental evangelism is to presuppose that others are spiritually inferior to themselves, and need to be “saved.” And of course, they are more than willing to be the agents of such salvation. I think there is something mean and selfish in that sort of thought and behavior.
For them to realize what you suggest they might, would indeed be a wonderful thing. But I am just a little more than somewhat skeptical. I do commend your thoughts and wishes, though. Very much so.

Hi KT-

I’m not sure this group fits the extremist bill of believing they need to rule the world. They are and were sneered at and reviled by the REAL Dominionists, and they bloody well know it. They were the small, the meek, the desperate rather than C Street, the Tea Party Dominionists, the power brokers.

The world of fundamentalism is itself rather diverse, and the Bullies on the Block were not these folks. That’s what makes it so sad.

I totally agree about the Dominionists – they are the people whom I stand off hourly, daily, forever. They believe they are the Elect who not only are chosen by God (did any of them ask God? Though not…) but think that as the Chosen they and they alone are picked to rule the world. I’d be indifferent to them if they only routinely told me I was going to hell (as if I believed or cared) but they want the material world, all its resources, all the laws, all the institutions, and we, the non-believers are consigned to servitude and suffering.

To the Dominionists, Camping’s band of believers are in the same groups as we who are the “wrong” Christians, non-Christians, non-theists, humanists, pagans. The folks standing all these months with their signs were pitiful, not powerful. They were hopeful, not power mad. They found the world a terribly dangerous and awful place as much because of “Christians” as unemployment.

I don’t see them as our mortal enemies. We have the SAME mortal enemies – the Dominionists and a heartless society made up of people such as the Kochs.

So I fear for them. Now, if they find no solace among the kindhearted, where ARE they going to turn? They certainly can’t find inclusiveness with the Dominionists who hate them and look down on them. I hope they find somewhere to go with people who will care for and comfort them and tell them that they are worthwhile and help them believe they have NOT been abandoned.

It’s a harsh world for us all, but it is especially harsh when those who’ve given up everything have every hope and dream dashed. I wish them well.

I share your hope that they can find solace.

It’s kind of rough out there sometimes.

Well said cl. Even though they are extremely gullible (many people are when they are needy) I feel sorry for them too, and considering how much money Camping has made from these poor souls, he should be sitting in a jail cell charged with extortion, not still be around to fool people again. He has ruined many lives, he should be held responsible.

Congratulations on your award, I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more. Thanks for all of your good work and endless patience.

No, actually The Violent Femmes were a kind of a punk band, with quasi-religious leanings because the singer’s father was a minister. Really irreverent and quirky. This is from their second album and by the time it came out their fifteen minutes were pretty much up. Fun band, all the same.

Khirad, I posted this because of the visuals. I thought the image of the angel was pretty awesome. I didn’t know who the band was. (plus, I have to admit to a certain attraction to Emma Thompson)
