It’s time for the media to start calling the Tea Party exactly what it is — the Terrorist Party.

Gun sales up
Gun shows increased attendance
Guns displayed at rallies to protest the president

Threats of violence to the president up by 400%
Threats to members of congress and their families
Acts of violence at congressional offices

Shouting down members of congress at district meetings
Shouting out at the president during a joint session of congress
Shouting out at a fellow representative during debate

Violent rhetoric from Sarah Palin
Violent rhetoric from Glenn Beck

Shooting of police officers at the Pentagon
Shooting at the Holocaust Museum

Hate sites growing in number on the internet
Hate speech on social networking sites, such as facebook
Hate speech posted to comment sections of news blogs
Hate speech on major media outlets

Perhaps the statistics are new, but the tactics are not.

The T Party and the complicit GOP are simply following the plays laid out by George Bush and Dick Cheney for the last eight years: bully, threaten, use violence instead of negotiation, and win at all costs — if that means cheating, lying, threatening, or attacking.

Now that the GOP is out of power, their supporters are merely doing what they think they’re entitled to do — because of the role model of their last president.

Why should the T Party — the core of the Republican base — have respect for the constitutional process of law making when their president called the Constitution “just a goddamned piece of paper” while flagrantly breaking laws and violating constitutional provisions?

The Bush Administration was the Administration that could not tolerate words on a T-shirt, to the point of arresting the wearer, expelling her from the congressional gallery, or barring them from attending town hall meetings.

The Bush people are the ones who exposed a covert CIA agent to possible death — simply as a political vendetta. We still have no information on the consequences to assets recruited by Plame’s group.

I don’t want to do a rehash of the Bush Administration, but I think it’s important to remember what kind of person was president of this country for eight years. Whether legitimately elected or not, he had strong supporters, he was a role model for some people, and he set a new standard for political behavior. Giving reporters the finger, publicizing photos of the of slain sons of Saddam Hussein while forbidding photos of our own lost soldiers’ flagged-draped coffins, invading and plundering an unarmed nation, ignoring warnings about the World Trade Center.

What we are experiencing now with the T Party — perhaps we should call them the B Party — is an extension of Bush, without Bush as the figurehead. They are continuing the same toxic behavior that for years was sanctified by the high office of the presidency. Only now they are footloose with no figureheads but the wolf-killing, self-absorbed Sarah Palin and the unstrung Glenn Beck to express their hostile instability.

This is what the GOP has become after many years of doing exactly what they want, in spite of the will and welfare of the American people. This is the GOP after decades of focus-grouped discourse, brutal policy, commercialized belligerence, and unchecked corporate aggression. We are seeing what is produced by politics that do not respect the public, the constitution, or the principles on which this country was founded.

The T Party is a very small  group of fanatics who are willing to use terrorist tactics in trying to force their will — a will that is not even their own, a will that has been designed by corporate interests — on the rest of the country. They are driven by hostility and a feeling of powerlessness because the legitimate tools of social change will never give them an advantage. So they have begun to threaten to use — and in some cases, use — the tools that inflict harm.

It’s time for all of us to call these people what they are. They are domestic terrorists. And until we bring this truth to the front pages where it belongs, we will continue to see an escalation in violent rhetoric and violent action. And people like Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck will continue to rake in blood money from their corporate sponsors.

UPDATE: The gas line at U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello’s (D-VA) brother’s home has been cut by a group of T Party criminals. The FBI is investigating.

He has been beaten, teargassed, imprisoned, had dogs set upon him & was one of the few TRUE heroes of the Civil Rights Movement….

He was still in his TWENTIES at the time..

Hi everyone!

If it’s any comfort at ALL, I dealt with this in this intensity in investigating hate crimes in the 90s. There were actually MORE of these groups, armed and dangerous, especially after the Estes Park summit following Ruby Ridge (the FBI shoot out with a milita group OK’d by GHW Bush that wound up killing a woman and teenager). At Estes Park, representatives from every wingnut extremist faction was present from militias to anti-abortion to anti-tax. It was there that the nexus among the groups was established and some measure of cooperation was born. There was created the “multi-mission extremists” that prowl the landscape today.

After Waco in 1993 (another FBI shootout with a religious cult accused of child sexual abuse among other things) the intensity rose culminating in the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City. After that, some things settled a bit, but the intensity of the conspiracy theories grew with myths about ‘flame throwing’ tanks (not) in Waco and other things that simply festered and boiled until Bush was elected.

Those of us who dug out old files see that there are actually FEWER groups now than then. Just as much hate and projection of gummint take over, just as much spittle, just as much racism – so what’s the difference? Why is it so clear that these people are actually a lot more dangerous now than then?

One thing – massively more coverage in the news. They are the entertainment central for both progressive AND conservative 24-hour feeds. Another – MORE elected officials dodging and weaving on support/no support for them but involvement with them nonetheless. Even with the support in Congress for these violent factions, it’s nothing compared to today. That alone changes the dynamic enormously.

This perceived sanction by Republican leadership truly emboldens the extremists. The anti-abortion Dems who voted for the health bill are being treated EXACTLY as if they were abortion providers – the tactics used against them are identical, and those (prochoice or anti-abortion) being threatened come from hubs of anti-abortion extremism: Buffalo, NY; Cincinnati, OH, Canton, OH, Virginia. Stupak is from the area where the Nichols brothers, Tim McVeigh’s cohorts, lived. These people have harbored those who’ve killed before. No reason to think they may not harbor someone who’s ready to kill again.

These targeted congress people have reason to be fearful because no one in their party or on their ideological side is rallying to their cause. Oddly it’s WE who are trying to protect them, even when we do not agree with them. I personally called Stupak’s office to provide some support and comfort. I don’t like what he DID in his threats to women, but I like the way he moved to support health care, and I owe him a thank you and kind word. The woman answering the phone was shell shocked that I was kind. That’s purely sad.

I will say that what WE do, privately and publicly, matters. Calling these reps under siege is crucial. I think we need to write letters to papers saying this is disgusting behavior and calling it out as un-American and (for those who can) un-Christian. The lovely bit tonight on the Planet about what gun would Jesus carry is very funny – but scary to me, too, because these perverts have so twisted the Bible that they BELIEVE Jesus packed – or at least would do so today. NOT true, and it needs to be called out.

I think the media are largely to blame, and I think the Reep leadership is definitely to blame.

Funny – these are the people hollering at the poor, immigrants, moms on welfare, the homeless saying they all need to take “personal responsibility” for their lives.

Wonder when they’re going to step up and take theirs?

No one should be holding his or her breath.

Uh Oh! I’ll write fast in case you start HAL-ing on us. I wrote a series on hate groups a while back here and those guys are typical. Unfortunately, there are hundreds just like them. If you want to curl your hair, go to Stormfront.com. It’s a huge site and they have their own children’s book, recipes–ah, it’s so family oriented!

August Kreiss (sp?) who headed the Posse Comitatus in Ulysses, PA announced that the Twin Towers was the work of Al Qaeda BEFORE anyone else thought it was anything but a horrific accident. He gloated about it, and a couple of years later when he’d bulled his way into becoming the head of Aryan Nation after the death of its founder, declared his ALLEGIANCE with Al Qaeda! He was so virulently anti-Semitic that he decided that was a good way to go. We’ve never been able to determine if he had prior knowledge of 9/11, but he to date has escaped any kind of prosecution.

When the horrible shootings broke out around DC, one of the hate monitors predicted where the last three shootings would occur because they were forming a pattern of a backward Chi-Rho, the symbol of the Phineas Priests, a movement rather than an organization, that embraced the idea that killing people was their step toward ordination. Paul Hill who murdered an abortion provider and pro-choice escort in FL, was a self-avowed Phineas Priest. Now the two guys who did it were reported seen at (I KNOW this is weird) a white supremacy site before the shootings began. How could a Black man, Muslim convert, be accepted by white supremacists? Back to Kreiss. No one ever checked that report out. Thanks Bush FBI… The hate crime monitor who spotted the pattern was herself working tangentially for the feds, and her predictions were spot on, but that was never checked either. (And no she was not the shooter!)

We are left wondering WTF?

And I saw John Doe No. 2 in Buffalo NY in May 1992. He was near, though not immediately with, Tim McVeigh during the siege of Buffalo in the “Spring of Life”. When we reviewed those tapes of that day, we saw that behind the blue-haired Catholic ladies on the curb across from a clinic were dozens of white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and other extremists who were not obvious because they remained behind the ladies. Only the photographer caught them all on tape.

This uprising of the T party people (GOOD name!) is not new but an extenstion of the 90s violence and hate. What it is today is more bold and more emboldened. They have a target that Bill Clinton did not offer – a Black president, and that has also energized them and restored the cooperation and actions that dwindled off during the Bush years.

So am I scared? Yup. I expect another OK City, a possible assassination attempt, the murder of congressional leaders – something, anything. And I also see already a spiral in hate crimes directed at individuals who are not famous. It’s almost as if the 90s were the practice run, and today is the real thing. Fewer but nastier. And they are trained, armed, and ready.

It’s not if. It’s when.

SanityNow

jeezus, cl. these people give me great pause. a little anxiety as well. the ironic part ( love iRonny) is that my gut reaction after reading the Oath Keeper manual was that I needed to arm myself to protect my family from them if the time came. We live on a couple of acres in a rural part of a heavily militarized county in WA. we are surrounded by a very christian and well armed, active duty and retired, group of people, some of whom I have met would fit that profile.

Sanity – I’m a card-carrying, knee-jerk, bleeding-heart liberal who thinks sometimes you need a gun. For years I supported a woman who had gone “inside” these movements to gather evidence. She was and is a civilian, and her life became untenable. You can hear her and her experiences in an interview she did for “The Story” – Dec.2 last year. It’s in their archive at http://www.thestory.org It aired on many PBS stations. Once not long ago when I was with her, we came under siege from RW people in the woods around her house (long story of why) which stopped only when she went to get her guns from the car, and I SAID that. Once the WORD was uttered, we had no more trouble. Scariest two days of my life.

So yeah. Guns. Sometimes needed.

But it does depend on YOUR having a decent relationship with the local sheriff and being open about it. Makes a huge difference if ever they are called to your place. Knowing someone has a gun gets different responses based on what they know about YOU. And I hope you and your family all know how to use them WELL. An emergency is no time to learn.

I want guns registered. I want urban Saturday night specials banned. I want very tight controls on concealed carry. I want laws on USE of guns very clearly limited to immediate and real threats – not idle fears. NO armor penetrating bullets. I want us to stop substituting human intimacy with gun lust.

But sometimes, even the good guys need guns because the bad guys don’t care what they do to you. And no, I do not have one. Yet.

SanityNow
Member

well put, cl. I happen to be an expert in small arms twice over (.38 revolver & M16 & .22 bolt action long rifle) courtesy YMCA Camp Orkila when I was a kid and the USAF when I was little more than a kid. We have a
“sportsman’s” club just down the road a piece ( 😉 )where the local T Party prolly gets their shoot on regularly and the local law enforcement and some military contract with for regular training. Black powder shoots also.

Anyway, I had been thinking about that (arming ourselves) for a while due to a severely psychotic and bipolar father in law who made threats against us and our kids over three years ago and whom we haven’t seen in all that time. But it is just a matter of time before he drives up the long driveway.

It is all moot for now until I start working and am earning some money to buy them but when we do, we’ll be joining that sportsman’s club to practice and mingle with the local yokel’s and maybe just the fact that we are there and white and armed will help to disguise us as being possibly one of them and so they will look right over us. For better or worse, we bought this place over a decade ago when Seattle was booming and we couldn’t afford its high prices. After moving in to our little farm of benign neglect, we realized that “these are not our people.”

We are hopelessly liberal and card carrying social(ist) democrats and that is a rare bird out here. Don’t want to give them anything to shoot at.

choicelady

Sanity – didn’t we have a good conversation about “stealth”? I do believe boring from within is a good thing for two reasons. One is learning. The other is teaching.

I think, given where you are and your personal experiences, being good with defense is a good thing.

On an emotional front, I detest our gun culture. On a personal safety front – not so much. I’m on a “hit list” (bet that does not surprise anyone – Ms. Big Mouth) but because we’re in a city, I hesitate to ID myself that way to the cops. It actually puts US at risk if they know we have registered firearms. I’d hate to call for something little and have them over-react! But I’m pretty good with a 9mm and an MP-5. The fact that the latter is nearly as big as I am is pretty funny, but my targets were bodacious! So to the RW thugs – don’t piss off the Churchlady. You just never know.

SanityNow

I am right their with you, cl. seriously. guns give me the creeps but that is because I have a healthy respect. they make me very nervous if they are in someone’s hand with whom I have little trust. and, dude, MP-5?! an HK machine gun. whoa. you are my new lib hero. I LOVE MIke! He once read a letter of mine on the air pointing out his diatribe against Islam was wrong – it’s culture, not that faith, that leads people to some of the biazarre stuff they do. Many Muslims adopt western ways in their own nations, many others are stuck in the Stone Age. He was SO nice to do that.

I am so ambivalent about this, but my friend would have been killed not once but on several occasions had she not answered the door with gun in hand. Eric Boehlert from Media Matters sums it up pretty nicely

My hunch is that over the past few months, the right-wing media, along with self-adoring Tea Party members, made the mistake of believing their own hype. They convinced themselves that not only did 2 million people take to the streets of the nation’s capital last September to protest Obama (a number that was off by 1.9 million), but that “millions” more had marched coast-to-coast over the past 12 months (a number that was completely fabricated). They fastidiously constructed their own parallel universe and convinced themselves that last summer’s mini-mobs at local town hall forums had defeated health care reform. They thought their rowdy show of force, complete with Nazi and Hitler posters, and even some protesters parading around with loaded guns, had changed the debate.
