Bravo! a grand slam on this one Adlib. The characters with spot in in appearance and attitude.
It covered my favorite reason for never voting GOP as well. There is a reason only 6% of scientists identify themselves as Republicans. Not excepting scientific progress is probably my biggest complaint with the right. Because if you don’t except a fact based system to come up with your personal ideology you will almost always be wrong.
I had a troll actually argue with me that science has laws, like Newton’s law of gravity. I tried to enlighten him and say 100% of science was theory because to be a law you would not only have to be 100% accurate with your predictions, you would have to observe 100% of physical interactions throughout all time to prove a scientific law. He just could not comprehend that science has progressed past Newton’s so called laws at least 5 fold from Einstein’s theory or Special Relativity, to Quantum Gravity and now there is evidence that gravity is not even a constant.
I blame some fundamentalists religions for this anti-science attitude but I think it goes far beyond that. Many people of faith are scientists and accept the theories like evolution and climate change. It’s more about people who want to control not only other people but the world around them by putting limitations on science just because anything they cannot understand cannot possibly be true in their minds. In that way I think ego-centrism is at the root of their problems.
On the flip side probably the thing I like most so far about Obama’s presidency is how he embraces science like no other president since Carter. If we had listened to Carter instead of Reagan we would not have half the domestic energy problems we have today. Besides healthcare costs the biggest drag on the US economy including wage stagnation is dependence on foreign energy sources.

I think there is something about control that is related to this hatred of science.
If people become accustomed to accepting reason and logic, they will no longer be the mindless sheep that Repubs need.
By accepting scientific theories, it means that they might put aside such things as blind faith and following those who present themselves as authorities.
As long as people are terrified of lightning, a control-hungry leader can step up to say, “It is Zeus who is angered because you are not doing what I’ve told you he wants! Now do as I tell you!”
That blind spot that unfortunately is implanted in many people when they are young, to follow authority and accept what they’re told on faith, that to question the soundness of what you’re told is in itself an offense, is in truth a backdoor that the unscrupulous can use to manipulate and control.
Allowing people to become confident of reason is to let them seal up that back door and that is the last thing such people want.
Ignorance isn’t really bliss, it’s power.

I’m not nearly as charitable as you are. I think some people just refuse to believe anything they can’t understand — especially if it means they have to change their minds about anything.
Of course, they’re very willing to watch television every day without understanding a thing about it.
I don’t think I am being that charitable at all because control is far from a benevolent motive. They are not intellectually curious because they know dumbing down even something as complicated as the natural world is an easier way to control people from the GOP trying to control the orthodoxy of their base to a conservative mother homeschooling her children to make sure they are indoctrinated to not question the beliefs they are taught.

Question on Sarah’s latest phony outrage outburst: Has she resigned from Fox now, since they are the perps of this gross insult to her family? After all, Family Guy IS a Fox production, isn’t it!? How can she work for the very same company that committed this heinous deed? (Somehow, I doubt the question has even occurred to her.) As usual, she paints herself into a corner.
Hope to get back to more regular posting soon. Suddenly there’s so much going on on the home front. Some of it is even good! Like the son getting an invitation from a MAJOR university to come, spend the weekend and check out their graduate program for PhD Mathematics studies….yaaaaaaay. Seriously, though, Cher, I have learned so much from these children of mine! Don’t you find that to be the case? They are so smart–both of them–and they are good people, too. Thanks, I’ve only missed two family get-together’s since I came here 30 years ago, not bad really and one was this year.
About stories from Japan, I had been planning since before we opened the Planet, to write about the culture shock and some of my embarrassing and often hilarious adventures in the land of the rising sun. Even had a title picked out, “The Adventures of Calamity Kalima.”
I had been taking notes for years shortly after each experience and after promising AdLib that I wanted to do this, searched the whole house for those notes and couldn’t find them. They are here somewhere, I know that I would never have thrown them out, I’m still looking.
I wasn’t all that sure if it would interest more than a few people, so I have just shared a few comparisons now and then in comment as I’m still not sure what people would like to hear about. I’ll certainly think about it.
Oh Kalima, I do hope you find those notes but even if they are buried in the attic, I am still interested in daily, mundane life in Tokyo. You say you are not sure it would interest more than a few people; well, that can be said of any of our posts! It shouldn’t matter, it’s all content and I think that makes the site more interesting.
And yes, that thread, with the jokes, and the gossip, and even some things I learned about people –nothing earth shaking, just some factoids–was big fun. I wonder where some of those folks have gotten too. We need to get them back here!
Ok Cher, I’ll see if I can include a few stories or observations in MB now and then and hope that you will understand Japan, it’s people and their sometimes odd idiosyncrasies a little better through these “gaijin” foreign eyes. I’m a bit of a loon, I admit. 🙂

New Year’s family knees up would be hilarious if it wasn’t so painful. Years ago the day was rounded off by drunken karaoke with prizes. I one won a bright red “Kiss The Chef” apron for a Bossa Nova song. It disappeared from my kitchen one year I invited the in-laws for Christmas Eve dinner, a few years later, I saw my father-in-law wearing it over there, so I had to plant a kiss on his cheek.

My mother-in-law is typical of her generation here, my father-in-law would be missing for days on end, no one knew where he was. When he returned we would find out that he’d gone off to Taiwan, Korea or even China with a bunch of friends. I was always concerned and asked my mother-in-law why she didn’t notify the police, she’d just smile and say that he was like a pigeon, he always came home.
