The 7.0 Earthquake in Haiti will be absolutely devastating to the people of this country.

The Haitian people have been living in filth, severe poverty, hunger, and political corruption. They have been eating mud pies for over a decade. The US government has been playing kick the can with Haiti for over 30 years. While… the Haitian people will somehow survive through this I urge all of us to donate and help the Haitian Nation to become a self standing government and help the people get through this horrific crisis.
Haiti needs to be Corruption Free.

NBC Today show has the following link for donations, if only it is $5.00 or $10.00 here is their link:
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/34835478/ns/world_news-haiti_earthquake/

I also urge all of us from the Planet Community to contact President Obama and your members of Congress to stand up and quit putting the political band-aid on Haiti and help them.

FeedUp I hope you don’t mind me editting this post but I just got this email from the White House.

The White House, Washington

Good Afternoon,

The reports and images from Haiti of collapsed hospitals, crumbled homes, and men and women carrying their injured neighbors through the streets are truly heart-wrenching. As we learn more about the extent of the devastation, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti and Haitian Americans around our country who do not yet know the fate of their families and loved ones back home.

I have directed my Administration to respond with a swift, coordinated and aggressive effort to save lives. The people of Haiti will have the full support of the United States Government in the urgent effort to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble and to deliver the humanitarian relief — the food, water and medicine — that Haitians will need in the coming days.

This is also a time when we are reminded of the common humanity that we all share, and Americans have always responded to these situations with generosity of spirit. If you would like to support the urgent humanitarian effort in Haiti, I encourage you to visit our website where you can learn more about how to contribute:

http://www.WhiteHouse.gov/HaitiEarthquake

Americans trying to locate family members in Haiti are encouraged to contact the State Department at (888) 407-4747.

We will continue to stand with the people of Haiti and keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

I may be off base here. I was just watching Ed Schultz and for every story about Haiti, he had a black leader on to discuss this or that aspect of the aid efforts. This strikes me of media racial thinking. I mean, the people in Haiti ARE PEOPLE first and black second! Why is it a black issue? Why are African Americans the most qualified to talk about aid?

I kinda’ agree, Cher. But I honestly didn’t even notice.

What?
I do not understand what you are trying to say, and it could be because I’ve had 3 beers, but what?
It’s not a ‘black’ issue, and of course I know that you know that, but it’s a human issue.
Maybe the interviews are with Haitians, because Haitians are black people?
Ignore me, because I don’t know how to ask what I am trying to ask.

Chernynkaya

What I was trying to say is that it seemed as if ED was making it a black issue instead of a universal, humanitarian issue. I’m glad you let me clarify that– and I haven’t even had a beer. 🙂

A chilled martini should be right about now, agreed?
You like martinis, right?
Do you love them olives in them?
I can’t tolerate alcohol, except beer and I love wine and champagne, plus I detest olives, but wish I liked that sort of thing, because it seems so high class and civil.
Shaken or stirred?

I don’t see this as an issue at all!

Chernynkaya

Vegas, I wrote that badly. Did you see my clarification to Javaz below? What I was trying to say was that I had the impression that Ed Schultz thought Haiti was a black issue and not a human issue because of the fact that he had three African Americans discussing the aid effort, and that seemed to me to send a message that this was something AA’s are more concerned about than other people.

To top it off, I was just watching Matthews who said that this was the first time he’d seen the President so impassioned (about Haiti that is). He went on to say that this was because Obama is black. I am not saying those are racist comments, but they do put race foremost, when, in the case of Haiti, I think it is a human, not a racial, issue.

Do you still feel I am off base? OK if you do.

I understand your point. I also understand the media will try to make this an issue of race. Just think how many people are reacting the same as you are. They can try to make it a racial issue, perhaps because of the Katrina outrage. Its about the ratings and right now there all heavily competing amongst each other.

That is except Fox, which had more hate Obama rhetoric this afternoon.

Thank you, FeedUp, for posting this. I sent a donation to the Red Cross this morning. It wasn’t much, but every little bit helps, I hope.

This is the result of centuries of punishment targeted at this small island and its idealistic forebears.

Rush Limbaugh’s response to Haiti –

“”Obama discussed Haitian earthquake sooner than attempted Christmas bombing; “Did he apologize for America?”””

I know I shouldn’t be surprised, but I am continually dismayed by the incessant attacks on President Obama’s every move.

These people– the Repulsive Party, their minions and the religious Right– disgust me! I hate them. They are the scourge of humanity, like a plague, except a plague is a natural occurrence but they are preternaturally evil. Yes, evil. I believe they feed off of fear and probably off of the hatred they evoke in me. But I can’t seem to stop feeling as I do. I understand their sickness but that does not excuse them, nor can I summon any pity for their soulless lives. Limbaugh, Coulter, Malkin, Beck, O’Rielly, Robertson, that Blackwater prick– not to mention the one in Congress– they are the litany of catastrophes in America. I don’t believe in hell, which is too bad, because they deserve nothing less than to putrefy for all eternity.

Just sayin’.

And the latest is, venerable gasbag Pat Robertson has come out with his stump speech about how it’s Gawd’s punishment because Haiti “made a pact with the devil” 😛

If you need a link, it’s on the front page of HP (where else?)

I don’t know which is more despicable, the insanely vicious utterances of Robertson, or the fact that the media actually finds them worthy of repeating ad infinitem 😛 😛

Hi Jan! Shocked, I tell ya!! Shocked!! 🙂

Did you really expect the MSM to do anything else? They just have to have their drama to get those ratings! Why ignore a juicy story about some right-wing loony and the outrage that he is causing? Fodder for the unplugged brains!

Conservative Christian Pat Robertson weighs in –

“Haiti’s Earthquake As What Happens When You ‘Swear A Pact To The Devil'”

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/01/13/robertson-haiti/

Disgusting.
According to Wikipedia, Haiti is over 80% Christian/Catholic

And, the prophet of hate Robertson brings up Napoleon the 3rd, whereby it was Napoleon Bonaparte.

Hi Javaz! Thanks for the link! I needed something to get my blood pressure up today!

The fact that this ignorant man gets up and makes statements like this is bad enough. But the worst part is the fact that he has thousands of people who listen to him, believe him, agree with him, and continue to send him money!

If there is a hell, I hope Robertson has a special place in the deepest, hottest part!

Politicizing this disaster is beyond despicable. I wish I could say our side is not politicizing it already either but in a different way.

I was definitely present for the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake here in CA. What an experience!!!
This quake in Haiti lasted only 35 sec!!!!

I was in a five point something earthquake in Japan years ago. Was on the third or fourth floor of a small hotel. But the building was clearly constructed with the possibility of earthquakes in mind, as it just seemed to sway gently side to side. I remember water sloshing out of the bath tub, smaller objects falling down, and the weird feeling of looking out the window and seeing presumably stationary stuff in what looked like slow motion. No damage to the building or any of the humans in it. Everyone was very calm. I had the luxury of being able to view it as almost a fun episode to tell about later.

Sadly, the situation isn’t even close in Haiti. Anything but fun there right now. I’m happy to report that the website I went to to make a donation was mobbed. I hope many others are, too.

I was in SF for that quake too, Hope. I remember how nerve-wracking the seemingly endless aftershocks were.

I was in a 7.0 in Olympia, Wash., a 7.1 in Coalinga, Calif. and a 6.9 in Mammoth Lakes, Calif.

Pepe Lepew

I’ve been in a 6.9, a 7.0 and a 7.1 and they weren’t that big of a deal. That’s why when I first heard this reported at 7.0, my initial reaction was that I didn’t think (or maybe it was hope) it would be that big of a deal, but as the news came in last night and this morning, it was obvious this was incredibly devastating. No building codes. All the buildings just came down like a stack of cards. They’re saying fatalities over 100,000. I’m really hoping that’s an exaggeration.

nellie
Member

Pepe, the 1994 quake in L.A. sent a shock the equivalent of 8.9 into Woodland Hills where I was living. It was awful, and every chimney and stone wall in the neighborhood came down. But the houses stayed up.

The building quality is so poor in Haiti. That fatality number is just so horrifying.

jan4insight

One difference, as you mentioned, is building codes – something the Repug’s would love to do away with because that requires the big bad gubmint “telling people what to do.”

As the pictures stream in, the news is worse and worse. The President has called for all-out relief from the United States. My god, how much worse can it get?

Donate what you can…I am and I urge everyone to do the same.

Well, thank goodness we don’t have a clod like GW in the white house. He wouldn’t lift a finger to save his own people.

I understand the economic difficulties we all are experiencing at this time and the fears for our own future.
I understand that it seems we are always being asked to give, give, give and that we can all succumb to charity burnout.

I do not understand the toll of human suffering when it comes to catastrophic events, because I am very fortunate to live in a rich country of opportunity, in my home with heat, clean running water, and ample food.

My husband took a moment this morning for an act of kindness that truly touched my heart and brought me to tears.
He contacted the Red Cross and donated in my late-brother’s name and I cannot express my feelings for his thoughtfulness.
I cannot think of a finer tribute to my brother than a donation in his name to help ease suffering.

Like FeedUp says, if you can only spare 5 dollars, it would go a long way, and you can donate in a loved-ones name if you so desire.
