I had never heard of David Sedaris or his alter ego, Crumpet the elf, until last year; and I listen to NPR all the time.  Okay, so I’m an NPR geek; what can I say?

On December 25, 2008, I was driving in Ohio from Cincinnati to Columbus and surfing radio stations for something to listen to other than Christmas carols.  The search landed on an NPR station somewhere between the two cities. It was then I heard the  “Santaland Diaries” for the very first time.   What I discovered was the hilarious recounting of Mr. Sedaris’ experiences as Crumpet the Elf when he worked at Macy’s in New York.

His narration has become a holiday tradition at NPR.  Since we’re all in different time zones, and some of us can not receive NPR,  here is David Sedaris (aka Crumpet the elf), interviewed first by Steve Inskeep, and then reading from his “Santaland Diaries.”

I first heard Sedaris on “This American Life” and have loved him ever since then. He’s a gem! Thanks for putting this up– he’s hilarious!

Hi Boomer, I saw the Santaland Diaries a couple years ago — the play — in Denver. It was very funny.

Is there an open thread here at Planet where we can post just anything, rather than use someone’s article, I mean use their reply space (which isn’t at all the thing!)?
